I think what many people really get wrong is that when they see someone dribbling past 4 defenders or lob a ball above keeper they think that player is new messi but what all the greats like messi, ronaldo(both), pele, maradona had in common was that they do the basics perfectly other than special skills. Generally players who have some special skills do not have work ethic to develop themselves into a complete footballer. Why try to spank a ball when you can just tap it in. It's those little decision making which makes them special.

Agreed! I also think it’s consistency. It’s all good having a brilliant few games or season even, but Messi and Ronaldo just never stopped being world-class year in year out. Quite an amusing one was Denis Davydov from Spartak Moscow. He really shined as a teenager and so the club's owner called him 'the Russian Messi' at like 18. The hype was so overwhelming that the boy played a half for the Russian National team while not being anywhere near the starting XI in Spartak. He got a huge contract extension in terms of numbers... and then started slacking in training, messing with his sleep schedule, eating junk, obsessively playing videogames... he stayed in the Spartak B team till 23 and then went to Bulgaria, Latvia, somewhere else and ended up in the Russian second league. And the best thing is he hasn't been a starter anywhere he went to.
A positively delightful watch. Happy Monday to all x
Excellent video,I work in the sports world in the US and Caribbean and you heard everywhere people claiming to have the "next Messi"...
Got two more “new Messi’s” from the list The “Jordanian Messi” is Musa Al-Taamari, who had a great stint at APOEL & was rumoured to top-5 clubs, as well as clubs like Olympiacos, but is now playing at Belgium’s OH Leuven The “Canadian Messi” I suppose would be Hanson Boakai though it’s an unwarranted label to have in his case, just puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on a player who’s currently without a club
While it was always pretty tongue-in-cheek, Marco Rojas is of course the Kiwi Messi. He did okay in a few journeyman spells around Europe, in about the same places that successful A-League stars tend to step up to - the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark - but never was quite able to replicate his best form, and has been hit pretty hard by injury upon his latest return.

It says Messi had more than just talent!!!
Coaches at Benfica's academy called Bernardo Silva "Messizinho". Was surprised you didn't mention him
There wont be a new Messi in our lifetime. Can we stop looking for the new "Messi" there is no "new Messi"
This is great example of how people get mistaken talent for giftedness Giftedness is something u r innately born with. Something which gives u a platform to do great stuff . Something which is broad and gives u the ability to do multitude of challenges. Talent is more like a catalyst, a knack to be good at a particular thing. U teach something to a talented person, it's just that they happen to learn and pick up faster and improvise. Players like messi(natural and efficient dribbling), Ronaldo(athlete body), son/Greenwood and other similar players(double footed), Xavi(exceptional vision) These people r gifted, they have been given the ability to perform stuff only they can. U cant teach gifts to someone else. Showing someone a video of what they r good at doesn't help anyone, bcos no one can re create it, bcos there is nothing to learn from it, they r just good at it, not just by practice, but their innate ability to be good at it.(you don't see messi doing any fifa skill moves, not even the occasional step over, he just dribbles past anyone who looks at him. How can u teach that to anyone) To find the next messi, u just need to see it happen, u cant predict it.
My casual observation is far too often, when a player is described as the new {insert legendary player}, it hardly ever pans out. Perhaps it is the weight of the comparison but it is also because predicting how a young potential will turn out in years to come is very far from an exact science. In the cases where the talent reaches his potential, he is seen as his own person and not the new player he was compared to. Case in point: no one describes Salah as the new or Egyptian Messi. He's simply described as Salah, a phenomenal player in his own right. Perhaps it is time we stopped such comparisons which have often been nothing more than a marketing gimmick but often affect the player in a negative way.
