It's a shame you never mentioned Chuck Jones and Maurice Noble! Chuck was the director, close friend to Sr. Seuss since world war II (when working on propaganda cartoons) and also directed over three hundred Looney Tunes cartoons and Maurice Noble was the background artist who did the colour palettes and everything (And also did the same for the Looney Tunes backgrounds when Chuck was involve). The Grinch in the cartoon was Chuck Jones' own image, even Seuss said that his Grinch looks more like Jones than Seuss. In fact, it was Chuck's idea to make the Grinch green because 1, it's the opposite colour to red which fits well with Maurice Noble's complimentary colour theory and scheme, 2 is that it's the traditional Christmas colours and 3 is that Jones has seen some really ugly green (and slightly yellow) cars at the time. NOTE: Oh wait, nevermind, sorry!

There was also the Grinch vs. the Cat in the Hat special! The Grinch messes with the Cat, just because the Cat passed him in traffic! I'm surprised you didn't mention it...

Carrey needing CIA help to withstand Grinch suit torture is an entire mood. That being said, nightmare fuel or not, the movie has its moments. Very quotable moments.

This is the first time where I've seen somebody's gripes for the live action Jim Carrey movie be partially linked to what happened behind the scenes. Honestly? I respect it!

A grinch horror movie sounds like a great comedy idea actually. The premise is hilarious on it's own, imagine how funny actually good writers could make it

From how I understood the live action How The Grinch Stole Christmas movie, the Grinch specifically didn't push Cindy-Lou Who into the postage machine. The scene had the Grinch in the post office tampering with mail by inserting false mail of bad news (such as jury duty and blackmail). When interrupted he grabbed Max and clung to a corner of the ceiling, until he was eventually revealed to Cindy-Lou. After being caught the Grinch leapt down, introduced himself, and scared Cindy-Lou, where she then fell backwards (but he did not touch her) into the machine, where she was then stuck and unable to free herself. The Grinch was going to leave, but ultimately with Max's intervention, the Grinch pulled Cindy-Lou from the machine. She thanks him, to which he counters by wrapping her in wrapping paper and putting a bow on her, another one of his shenanigans. It was from this, the Grinch saving her life, where she believed he had goodness in him and decided to prove it. I know my comment was for a relatively small point, but considering it was the ignition of the whole plot of the live-action film, I think the accuracy is worthwhile.

well think on this; why did the Grinch decide to "steal christmas" to begin with? from my point of view it's not because he's inherintely evil or anything, he just wants some god damn peace and quiet from the Whos he can hear from all the way up his mountain and I don't blame him. You can get a noise complaint from an apartment neighbor but apartments aren't super far apart, if I was oh idk maybe a mile away and could STILL hear people singing I'd be pretty pissed too especially when it's a frequent occurence

Adaptations like the Grinch(2018)and the Lorax(2012) really do make you understand why Seuss was so hesitant to sign off on adaptations of his work. Not only do they pale in comparison to previous adaptations and aren't even enjoyable on their own, but they blatantly contradict the messages of their source materials. They sanded off the tiny bit of cynicality that made the original stories so resonant, because God forbid a kid does a bit of thinking after watching a film.

"Being an orphan makes you evil". Unless you're Batman. Or Spider Man. Or Iron Man. Or Harry Potter. Or (walks away still rhyming off names), Star Lord, Luke Skywalker (kinda), Shosanna Dreyfus.....

I love the Jim Carrey Grinch movie, and I still stand by that. That being said, I now believe it is important to know that Jim Carrey went through a lot of pain wearing the suit and makeup for the film. Massive respect for him sticking through it.

8:50 A "euphemism" is a mild or indirect word or phrase substituting a harsher or blunt one. In this case, Euchariah needs to use the outhouse (which he's shown trying to get to before the wind carries him away), but, possibly due to "outhouse" and "toilet" not being considered family-friendly words for TV at the time, a euphemism is used in place of it. The joke here being that not only is "euphemism" used as the euphemism, but as the actual name they use for a toilet.

The Live Action Grinch has a special place in my heart. One of my favorite Christmas movies of all time

I always thought that my irrational fear of the live action Grinch (as a child) was a personal problem. Nice to know that I wasn't the only one who was terrified.

There’s actually another tv special made that stars both the grinch and the cat in a hat. If I remember correctly the grinch just wanted to ruin the cats day, but the cat rebuffs him, and it’s revealed that the grinch is so mean because he is sad about his lost/dead mother.

Do you get the feeling that Dr. Seuss was inspired by the story of Beowulf when writing The Grinch? Besides his own personal experiences of feeling of Humbugness during his wife's sickness, both stories involve a mean, hermetic monster than is pissed off by the noise and merrymaking of the townies nearby, and then goes down to put an end to their merrymaking. Only with more stealing and less cannibalism.

I actually really like that in the live-action Grinch movie The Who's need to relearn the meaning of Christmas just as much as the Grinch does.

Illumination has a lousy track record with Dr. Seuss adaptations, but this is what you could expect from the studio responsible for the minions. This is what I felt about the Grinch 2018, it was basically a retelling of Despicable Me, with the Grinch as Gru, Max as the minions, and Cindy Lou Who as Margo, Edith and Agnus. I noticed the film's plot followed Despicable Me more closely than the Dr. Seuss book, of the curmudgeonly main character doing something grandiose for attention, with the minion being comedy relief, and the cute child character being the foil to the villain, thus it comes to the very centre of what makes the Illumination film so forgettable: lack of identity. Illumination wanted to make a Grinch adaptation, but what they made instead was an Despicable Me clone, pretty much the only thing that studio is capable and willing to make, even the Lorax has Despicable Me characteristics, I'll bet if they made a Christmas Carol film, Scrooge will be an over-the-top supervillain, have Bob Cratchit as a minion, and Tiny Tim will be the cute precocious character, I call it the Illumination film formula.

The first How the Grinch stole Christmas was my favorite Christmas Movie to watch as a kid. My family didn’t like it as much so after age 8 or 9 I watched it alone in the room every Christmas for several years before my family gathered together in the living room and watched whichever Christmas movie they preferred that year. It got me far more in the Christmas spirit than any other movie

I hope you do a What Happened To? on The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

I can only imagine the torture that Carrey probably went through when wearing all that makeup and latex. To be fair, at least he literally looked like the Grinch. Unlike Myers who looked like some kind of abomination in the Cat in the Hat. Also, Martha wasn't married to the Mayor, he proposed to her after the festivities and that along with the razor that he gave the Grinch is what set him off. After the Grinch brought everything back, Martha then dumped the Mayor and decided to marry the Grinch.

2:04 well, I always interpreted the point being about sending a message rather than the actual act of burglaring the houses. And anyway, every kid isn't supposed to know what Santa Claus looks like, so if they were to wake up they wouldn't know that they're being robbed by the Grinch, and the parents whole point is to stay asleep to set an example for the kids. If either were awake in the middle of the night, then all the Grinch needs to do is concoct a lie, and if they were to wake up the next morning, they will find that the "source of all Christmas cheer in the world" and the "mascot of Christmas" himself robbed them of their Christmas cheer. This would stop all of the Christmas cheer, and therefore stop all of the noise in Whoville. 3:28 I mean, excluding all of the ghosts, the dead partner, the stingy old miser bit, and everything else that a Christmas Carol is, heck most people and films have argued for the Grinch being more of a victim of the Whos who just explodes at them in the worst way possible that is still cartoony and bombastically fun. Meanwhile, A Christmas Carol focuses on ripping the Upper Class people who completely neglect and even encourage their treatment for the poor, which Scrooge is set up as the perfect example of the reason why people like Dickinson suffer, because the Upper Class men are neglecting them for laughs and their paychecks. I could fix the Halloween special.

Martha May was never married in the movie, just horribly pursued by Agustus (the mayor), and she spent the movie being weirdly horny for the Grinch.

I loved the live action grinch movie, but learning about the background this is making me dislike the movie. I can’t believe they allowed that! The Nerve!

Am sorry but you didn't do justice to the Ron Howard's Grinch music... There is some pretty good characteristics of the movie and it actually solidifies some points that as a kid I didn't like about the T.V. Special (It is important to say that am not of the U.S.A. which is why I don't idolize or feel nostalgia for Dr. Seuss's work). The appreciation for creative content is subjective I guess...

The original 2D Grinch: classic, I love it and watch it every Christmas. The Illumination animated Grinch: it's fine. I watched it mostly because I like Pentatonix, and I knew they did a song in the film. I would watch it again, but it's not quite worthy of every year watching status. The Jim Carrey Grinch: I hate it. Sorry to anyone who disagrees. I'm not a fan because 1) I just am not a fan of Jim Carrey, and I think the humor in the film is crass and occasionally kinda sexual. Not my thing! More importantly, I hate it because 2) I was forced to watch/listen to it all day, everyday for 6 days a week for 5 whole weeks! I worked at a home for severely handicapped children, and my coworkers would play a movie during the day to entertain the kids. One coworker in particular was obsessed with the live action Grinch, and would throw a fit if anyone tried to change the movie, or even turn the volume down. And I couldn't leave the room, cuz someone had to be monitoring the kids at all times. So, after being forced to watch a movie that I already disliked, so many times, I now hate it.

The problem with turning the Grinch into a feature film, was to me as bad an idea of turning "The Hobbit" into a three film epic. The Chuck Jones version is the only one worth watching,. I was wondering how they were going to make a horror film based on "How the Grinch Stole Chistmas", since it didn't seem like something that the Dr. Seuss estate would approve of, and the book isn't in the public domain yet, like Winnie the Pooh. Well, it isn't called "The Grinch", and none of the characters are called the Whos, so it isn't technically an adaptation of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", as much as a rip off, like an Asylum picture.

The new rap version of the song just sounds like the guy doing it is super bored and can't be bothered to be doing what he's doing, it's crazy. Like zero effort was put into saying the words, he just meanders through it almost surprised that he's recording.

This video was BRUTAL!

Hard disagree on Jim Carrey's Grinch. It sucks it was so hard on him and him on the rest of the production but It's one of my absolute favorite movies for Christmas. Also my kids love the Illumination Grinch and it gets some laughs out of me too but even they hate that rendition of the You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch so much that they actively ask me to change it when we listen to the soundtrack in the car. Lol it's so awful.

Illumination makes everything worse

Recent Dr. Seuss adaptations are an exercise in irony. I mean, they're basically about turning commentaries on cynical corporate exploitation into vehicles for cynical corporate exploitation. And then there's The Cat in the Hat. I don't know why that movie exists. Why does every movie with anthropomorphic cat people seem to have been made on copious amounts of drugs? Every one. Yes, including Avatar.
