WHAT happened to the COCKTAIL in America?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a brief and hopefully entertain view of the history of cocktails in American. Starting from the creation in the early history of America going all the way to present day. It's the good the bad and the ugly and how the cocktail rose back to greatness.

    What a great video. I thoroughly enjoyed that. One potential point of clarification. At the 3:31 mark, you show a picture of a man, but I believe it may not be Cato Alexander. I believe it’s Tom Bullock, the author of the Ideal Bartender???

It is cool to see that black men have their place in history of this craft. I for one would love to see a black history in alcohol video from you, no matter what month it is given to us. As i started making my own cocktails, i started caring more and more about the ingredients i was adding. Now, if im making a giant batch cocktail, im going for best-bang-for-your-buck... but if im only having a couple of friends over, making the drinks is part of the entertainment and im putting out the best quality i can find/afford: good maraschino cherries, real grenadine, fresh juices, etc. So worth it to make a great drink.

    Not sure why, but I really enjoy your historical explanations. I totally hear you about "sugar"... so I use "Simple Syrup" -- it's sooo much healthier... (oops). But, yea, I like em sweet. You know what, after watching this video... I would love to see a "Good Cocktail" vs "Bad" comparison, where you show how to make what you think is the "good" version, and then actually show us how to make what the masses actually drink... ie the "bad" version. (or vice versa) ... Thanks again for a great video.

    I'm glad you enjoyed!!! There nothing wrong with sweet.Im big of drink what you like however you like it. everybody palate is a different. when things get overly sweet is when its bad. That's a really great idea I will work on! One thing I like to do when training is make a whiskey sour made with sour mix and put it next to one made with fresh lemon juice and egg white and have them try it side by side to see the difference.

    Hi! I just discovered your channel, and I’m digging it! The Mrs and I just bought a restaurant (family diner) in a small town, the only restaurant in town actually, and we got with it a full liquor spread. We have licenses as well. My rub is this, I’m no bar tender, and I’m more than pleased with whiskey and water personally, so I’m a stranger to mixed drinks. The previous owner (third owner) really let the dinner cocktail/mixed drink thing slide from the second owner, and really just focused of bottled beers. There is a single bar/liquor store in town that does serve up cocktails/mixed drinks. So far I’ve come across a few channels like yours for guidance, but any further direction would be helpful, such as, how to price mixed drinks, when does a top shelf booze really make a difference in a mix vs a middle shelf, what are the absolute musts for core recipes, and more I can’t even think of yet. Thanks and keep it up!

  • @justhaveadrink

    @justhaveadrink

    Congratulations!!!!!! First advice don't overly stress out about it. Know your guest and what kind of drinks they like. and focus on that keep it simple, adapt and then grow. Old fashioned and margaritas are popular everywhere. You don't need to use top self booze for good cocktails but use good booze. As for pricing drinks generally as an idea take a whiskey and water. Say it cost you as the owner $1.80 to make and you sold that drink for $10. so you have set your drink at 18% of the cost. thats a rough idea.

    I love how it was Murphy's law all over the place. Four darkest hours, each one darker than previous on, if i counted correctly? Have you seen Charlie Beren's "Four type of bartenders"? I think, he perfectly summarized, what it wrong with "Mixology" term. It is wrong when people are more obcessed with their self-branding, than perfecting of their craft.

  • @justhaveadrink

    @justhaveadrink

    Thank you! I went back and watched it after seeing you comment. Trevor Wallace made one about speakeasy bartenders its hilarious. The self-branding is a problem. Their experience in a bar should always be key. I love making great craft cocktails and especially introducing them to people for the first time. But at my last job my top favorite regulars drank bud light, vodka soda, Bombay and tonic and it was a great time when they were there
