I like how you didn't shown any modern day pics of that "fortress" until the end when you shared how it became a museum. You kept us concerned that it met the same fate of so many grand homes you've profiled!

I loved the beer drinking room. My partner and I are creating a pub off the back of our house that will be similar in style with stained argyle glass cabinets and Moorish tiles.

Truly a structure worth saving because of its elaborate High Victorian aesthetic.

This museum would be worth taking a trip to see. The copper roof showed that this house was designed with permanence in mind. The two beds in one room showed how in love this couple were.

The architecture reminds me of so many old campus buildings around the country. This is another house that I probably saw many times as I went down New Hampshire Ave in DC and never really noticed it.

I toured this home years ago. It is quite the house. Most of the rooms are original. The wood work is phenomenal and the original bathroom was quite impressive, bigger than some apartments I’ve rented.

Lived in DC for many years and have been in a lot of the surviving mansions - either with business at the (inevitable) institution or embassy that now occupies them or as part of what was (covid may have killed it) an excellent annual walking house tour. The Castle is impressive - you can tell at an instant this was a German family - god they love wood carving. When I went it was actually free, but gave a generous donation. There were still family members involved at the time (I swear we spoke to a great grandchild once); I believe one story was that we were allowed to touch the bannister - that was the only thing the kids could touch too. The living room is most impressive, but I kind of like the conservatory b/c it is so light (though I'm not sure if it's contemporaneous or a later addition)

I believe the “air rights” to the property were sold decades ago, when the Columbia Historical Society owned the property. That provided funds for the society and decreased the financial value of the property and motivation to demolish the structure for new construction.

I can't believe someone wanted to demolish it post 2003. If it had been torn down in the 1940's one could live with the fact that it was not yet historic. Anything over 100 years old need to be seriously thought about!

The entities that wanted to buy the house and demolish it should have been flogged. Why are so many people and companies so short-sighted? How can they not appreciate the effort that went into this house and the timeless beauty of its features? I don't get it! Ken always asks, "Which room was your favorite?" and I almost never respond to that question. Most of the houses he covers are far too gaudy for me to fully appreciate. But in this case, I do have an answer. Whichever room had those carved wooded lion faces is my favorite. Just one of them would be enough to turn my house from a hovel into a showpiece. I would place it in sight of my favorite chair so I can relax in the evening and admire it.

I personally don't like this style of architecture. It has a heavy, threatening vibe. At least inside this particular R-R mansion the living was very bright, unlike the usual dark wood, walls, floors & upholstery. The bedroom was also light and airy.
