What Happened To Obey : The Rise And Fall Of A Streetwear Brand
Ойын-сауық
How many remember Obey? Created by American street artist Shepard Fairey, OBEY was one of the hottest streetwear brands around.
The pieces were all over the place and Fairey himself was in such high demand that he was commissioned to create a piece for Brack Obama back when he originally ran for president.
But over the years, Obey has all but fell out of public attention, why is that? Lets find out, I'm Nate the great from Takeflight214.com and this is the Rise and Fall of Obey.

I’d still wear obey. I wish I could find some more vintage pieces from early 2000’s for sure. I wouldn’t wear the new stuff tbh. Very fascinating video. I was watching Degrassi and saw someone wearing an obey t shirt and didn’t realize it was founded in the early 2000’s. I thought it was a hype beast brand that was popular back in my high school days. So I decided to start looking around for more of the earlier clothing pieces. Then randomly decided to look up “obey clothing brand history” and found this video. Nice commentary and nice work!

I^m still an big fan of Obey
Bro you need WAY more view and subscribers. There’s no way that teens during the late 2000s-early2010s don’t relate to the clothing trends from that period.

OBEY CLOTHING WAS FORMED IN 2001
I remember all this Obey going on during the 08 election . It was a crazy time then just like it's now . This "steeet art" coincided with the whole "hipster boom " of that era . Post Gen X enter the Millennial ..
Appreciate this bro, well put together and informative 🤘
Zumiez happened to a lot of these brands, that's what happened.

That’s exactly it. Once you put your shit in Tilly’s and Zumiez it’s over. The little kids and lames get their hands on your shit and it’s game. Never ever sell out and instead open your own lil shop and online store fr

I totally forgot about Obey until I walked into a store here in Bangkok and noticed they were stocked with the stuff
Hell yeah. One of best fabrics for winter and skating
I still wear it
It's fallen out of public attention, but he's moved more into the fine art world and makes much bigger sales with fewer buyers. Not sure about what his financial statements look like, but he seems to be doing fine.
From a graffiti perspective he sold out From a business perspective there was so much potential for more From the art perspective not many mainstream or underground was doing stencil art on his level at the time. You call him what you want but a g.o.a.t in my eyes.

I'm not into Obey but I can't disagree with you.
I still buy his apparel, t shirts more than anything, when I see a design that likes me. After Stussy this is the brand of which I have more clothes
I still rock Obey
Thanks for video!
I’ve always wondered this!!

once you see andre the giant, you cannot unsee it in the obey sticker no more
Still in all the stores in uk too
Amazing vid brotha
I’m a fan of Fairey as a whole and what he stands for but I can agree that the OBEY brand has lost momentum. The brand graphics have become very simple and have gone away from his anti-establishment views seen in his early art as well as more recent works of his own. I’m still a fan of OBEY because of Fairey but he needs to continue shaking things up like he does elsewhere in his art.

Is OBEY brand satanic, I have a few shirts but recently I’ve heard rumors of it being like that.

Oh, this is why the "I still BLEACH" hit Japan. It followed the OBEY tactic. Makes sense since Kubo loves fashion.
Hello Nate, how is it you don’t have 10,000,000 subscribers is a mystery to me?

By the way, we have appeared in 1999, in Russia in Moscow. I was still very young then, but I consistently wore their clothes from 2006 to 2014. it was like a lifestyle.
Just bought a dope varsity jacket from them
Plenty people still wearing obey especially the art fans and og streetwear heads
It did it's thing pretty well
I actually hate they swag Era obey aesthetic and I think to this day their shirts are pretty bad, but I've enjoyed the jackets, cardigans, and the like that they produce now a days. Avoided them like the plague at the time, but I do own some pieces now that the aesthetic changed.
And also constant legal issues.
Excellent analysis. Could you do a video on what happened to Zoo York?

Nothing happened. A new era or new generation came, which affects most clothing companies. Back in the 80s, we wore Gibauds, Gennera, CK, Benetton, Union Bay, Tretorns, etc…Those brands aren’t popular anymore, and the current young generation has no awareness or interest in them because they have the style and brands of their era
I own a beanie and a hoodie from obey
Obama was my first president I could vote for. Let’s just say I haven’t had hope for politics ever since.
Not gonna like a video I haven’t seen yet to know if y’all did it right yet, ya dingus
Not gonna lie I hated OBEY, I never understood the tees. 😅 They look cool now though.
Style is cyclical and all trends have a an expiration date. Street wear in general has fallen from the forefront. Sadly the art of true fashion has been destroyed by “fast fashion “. Dominated by cheap disposable fabrics and poor imitations of fine silhouettes. One can argue that the art of fashion is dead. To every single person calling this man a sellout - Please let us know the name of your brand and the elite locations carrying your streetwear collection. One beautiful thing about Shepard Fairey is his belief that art is for everyone. The glory of great art is not a privilege reserved for the rich and famous. He continues to release prints at prices the average American can afford. Within minutes his prints appreciate in value 200%-300%+ Contributions to the historic election of Americans first black president were a a privilege to participate in. Even if some were ultimately disappointed by policy or events, we helped to change our country. I did not believe I would live to see a Black Family in the White House but I had HOPE. When your art is hanging in the Smithsonian you have NOT fallen. Shepherd Fairey an Icon.
Nah id wear it if it was cheaper I just can't bring myself to pay that much for something so simple
His art is in great demand. You need to look into your content. Mainly your into sensation click bate. That puts eyes on your videos. The prices of his art continue to go up.

“Fall off” doesn’t necessarily mean completely broke or out of business.
I never buy was too expensive and the quality of snapbacks was poor
I always thought the using Andre the Giant and visuals from “They Live” as whack. It wasn’t creative and it was all over priced crap.
Bruh I received a beannie, and if they would remove the giant brand logo, I would swear it was from a chinese store, quality absolutely sucks

More true words have never been spoken
all the occult illuminati symbolism in their clothing is what turned me off help it make sense
The company came out as a liberal and lost a lot of customers
Everything in this world is for sale. Art, love, you, me. Each has its own price. No wonder he sold out. Although I heard that he was forced, supposedly by the guys from the brotherhood of the world government. He has undermined the system of the current world order too much.
Having Obey written on you just isn't good. I know the history but Don't Obey would be a better idea.
