Wow man I'm so surprised you put up this video. I remember requesting this a while back ever since I found your channel. However I'm surprised you didn't mention oban airing on toonami. I don't know about other people here but I THINK I distinctly remember seeing oban star racers air on too Nami at one point. The episode I recall seeing this was the episode where the main character was racing against some stick figure looking guy who would play a flute or something to put you to sleep. So my final question is since this show is short,how good is it actually? Without speaking with nostalgia is this a good show? Because whenever I think back on it i can't help but seeing it as an "okay" anime that's more or less a B show. Then again I only saw the one episode as a kid and I didn't really understand it very much. So would anyone here reccomend this? I ask since there doesn't seem to be much reception on the show back then and now. Also of course if I'm going to watch this what is the reccomend ed choice here; watching it in dub or sub? Oh also negative can I suggest a show to cover in the future, I was hoping to request medabots.

I remember when I was a kid I used to watch every new episode, I loved it. Then we got to the finale and my parents sent me to bed early saying "Oh, it'll be on again" ....it was never on again. Jetex died shortly after and the finale aired ONCE! I had to wait 10 years before the dvd's came out so I could finally watch the damn ending! (No Mom, I'm still not letting you live that one down~)

I'm actually glad this series had a really good ending. It had a nice story, pretty interesting and 3 dimensional characters and the design for this cartoon was really cool. I'm baffled this is not talked about all that much

I think I watched this show a few times on Jetix when I was still getting used to living in Canada. I almost completely forgot about it because I watched only a few episodes and it was a long time ago.

THIS. It had a well-defined beginning, middle and end. It was a self-contained series that could be revisited by exploring the Oban universe outside the view of the Avatar and the Great Race (particularly since the rest of the universe knows that the Earth team won the Race) and the Crog are still a threat... There is word that a sequel is in development as far back as 2017, so we may actually see a sequel after all.

I remember watching this on Jetix along with “Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go!”.

This series ending theme made me cry a lot when i was a child, is so calm and sad at the same time

I literally didn't even remember the name of this but I instantly recognized the art and the show, honestly french artists and shows are super underrated and now i have to go back and watch this again

Me too ! I couldn't remember anything about the show other than mollys face and the general art style ! I had to do a bit of research in order to find it's name , thankfully it didn't take too long .

This was a very decent surprise this morning i actually requested this a while back under a different user name Oban star racers was my jam back in the day when Jetix was a thing and now I'm more pumped can't wait to see when you do Code Lyoko that was one of my favorite cartoons back in the day this was a nostalgic throw back for me today great video.

The Japanese theme song was a million times better than never say never, glad they kept the ending song which is still one if my all time favorites

I’m just glad someone else remembers this show 😭 other then my siblings no one EVER knows what I’m talking about. Even my friends, who proclaimed they knew all the cartoons growing up (they mean they also watched anime) have no idea what this is.

Hey, Negetive Legend. I wanna thank you for reminding me about this show and aslo for a help to pass my driver licences exam. CONTEXT. Today I had my fifth try at the exam and had my practise before that didn't go so well this day. So before the exam I've been a bit stressed. But to relax I was listining Oban's theme song and humming it threw out the exam (the original, cause that was the version I grew up in Poland. I was a bit suprised by the english version from the fact that it actully exist). The song I think make feel calm, I was clear headed while driving and after fifth time I finally passed. Thank you very much.

What i loved about this show was the lack of plot armor . I mean they lost so many times that it was getting harder and harder to tell if they were gonna make it , unlike other show where they make the main character one up the evil characters

That's true, although I think Eva still shouldn't be so good of a pilot, competing with all those experienced alien racers. However, I don't complain much since it was important for the protagonist to be that young, and as you said, they lost many times and needed to rely on both wits and skill, which was good in order to make an interesting and challenging story.

Instead of plot armor Molly is tremendously resilient, you'd think she wouldn't race due to having lost her mom, but she's very much drawn to race like her mom, there's no doubt about it she's got trauma and frustration but she's tough as nails.

There is now a kickstarter up for a blu-ray release of this series.

Also - please cover Code Lyoko ASAP :P

I'll say this once and I'll say this again-Code Lyoko was (and still is) MY SHIT!!!!🤘

I remember rewatching this like last year and going in I was like “Yeah childhood, probably won’t be nearly as good as I remember” but honestly it held up. And I got to see the end (which I hadn’t before) so I was pleasantly surprised and happy

Dude, the soundtrack on this one was downright amazing, and I'm not talking only about the intro song. They had a 40+ orchestra for this. It was the bomb.

If any fan of the show sees this before 8th March 2022, you can contribute now to the official kickstarter to release the series on blu-ray in remastered HD!

There is currently an active KICKSTARTER campaign going on for a Bluray release of the first season. If things go well enough with this KICKSTARTER it will help with season 2.

man that show takes me back the nostalgia was real with the theme song was probably my favorite disney show then at the time when it aired besides the power ranger series that was airing at the time when Disney had control of it, didn't end up watching some parts of the show due to some stuff happening now I got to rewatch it. Code Lyoko I remember that show fondly can't wait until u do a video on it was probably my favorite cartoon show back when it aired and ended sad it had to go sadly

It was really cool. I waited through the development after discovering the molly star racer trailer in 2001 and it was SO SATISFYING watching the whole series. Lots of amazingly designed characters too! I hope you got to watch it!

I had this show as a really really really faint memory in my head. So I searched and searched and tried to find out the shows name. I only remembered it was on JETIX, but I eventually found out and re-watched it on KZread and oh boy.. What a great decision that was, so happy that I did. It resonates so well with me that I can barely put into words. The writing is nearly perfect, nothing feels out of place and it all accumulates in an intense finale, that leaves the viewer with a good feeling while maybe surprising him. It has great values and Morales, Sav nailed the focus on the emotional side characters.

Watching this reminds me that I'm almost halfway to being 30 XD

Loved Oban Star Racer's and Code Lyoko growing up, had no idea they had the same chatacter designer.

Considering anime is far and away my favorite medium nowadays, is it weird that two of my longest lasting favorites (Oban Star Racers and Code Lyoko) aren't even "anime" if you define it as Japanese animation? Though I guess Oban still counts since it was primarily animated in Japan.

I mean if we were to call animations by the names in their respective languges(cartoon for English ones, anime for the Jappanese ones) it would still be anime since cartoon in French is dessin animé and is usually shorten to animé.

I was expecting a more in depth overview of the series. But I'm glad someone is talking about this.

Oban star racers hits me in the feels in a way that really blows me away. Eva trying to form a relationship with her dad and having to fake an identity it's really a touching story, everyone risking things to get their wish granted.

I loved this series growing up as a kid! I know this video is 5 years old, but I'd love seeing a longer review of the series!

So in other words this show was way ahead of its time. This dude could make another season now and probably kill it

This was the first anime I've ever watched (aside from Pokemon).

I'm amazed a show with this much behind the scenes drama turned out so well.

Note: The US used “Never Say Never” for the opening theme for Ōban Star Racers, but in the UK (where I have lived for my whole life), we used the Japanese version of「A Chance to Shine」for the opening instead.

This show pops in my head every few years

I really hope they get to a sequel, cause I was sorta to young to understand a lot of my shows but I loved them, and I would definitely watch it.

I took this show for granite when Jetix was hot, but anime was not. I wasn't much of a fan until I saw season 1 a few weeks ago and my god, I was missing out big time. Now that I'm 20 years old, I realize what a lack of taste I had as a child. 😫

I always loved that Rock intro theme song, oh the FEELS! I really hope that they release a new season.

Another great show I grew up with. Though the Opening theme is different in English the Ending theme was not, which was from my understanding a rarity back then. All 3 songs in my opinion are good and it's a shame Never Say Never got a full version but oh well. Definitely a show worth checking out.

Amazon Prime has 2 seasons. It could be that they just broke season one into 2 but Idk. Thought I would share the info.

I saw the shout factory ad and really wanted to try to get it, but it looks like they only have vol 1 and not vol 2. I do hope Savin Yeatman-Eiffel makes the blu-ray version because I would love to own the show. I think the design and animation of the show hold up incredibly well and looks like it could have been made today. If they do start developing the 2nd version of the show I look forward to being able to see it. Also I am glad Savin did not compromise on his idea for the show. Molly being a girl and her personality is really fun and strong, ahead of the time for people just thinking main characters are boys and that girls can't do action in shows.

You understated how strict he was mostly because you can't really state how strict he was without it sounding like an insult. He went to Cartoon Network first and they tried to change a lot, I think they wanted to make it a team of racers instead of one, but with Sony they were ready to sign a deal and start making a video game to promote the show when they requested, and it's important to stress it was only a request, if it was possible to make the main character a boy instead and he didn't even really answer and just kinda pulled out. Same with a lot of projects not even dealing with just Oban star racers he'll just up and leave the moment someone starts even thinking about changing. He's holdfast to that my way or the highway mentality I think his work suffers from it because sometimes changes can make things better and we wouldn't have a problem getting HD Blu-rays if he worked more with people making promotional material like all the videogames that got scrapped because he refused to have anything deviate away from his vision.

I don't know. I agree with him. He shouldn't have to change his vision to get his show on air. Fight for your dream. The same thing happened with Miraculous but the creator let it be changed. It was originally supposed to be serious and now it's a repetitive show for young people. It's popular now but at what cost?

@@sirmel11 I'm not saying you have to give up full creative control. We live in a world of compromises and deals and that's how we as a society get this has done. For example we sacrifice a lot of our autonomy to be apart of the government and get those benefits. That's a compromise that we perform everyday to live an everyday life. Even if Sony was going to push for a male protagonist he could hold fast to it and compromise somewhere else like making prince aika a more present character or giving Jordan something else to do in the story. It's good to stand by what you believe in but not to the point where everyone in a given situation is worse for it. It's like when a pacifist does nothing to stop something bad from happening because it would mean not being a pacifist.

Maybe his show went on at the wrong time. I imagine people would be more okay with his idea these days. The show was good. Those companies should have helped him out. Changing the lead's gender is a big deal imo.

@@sirmel11 it is a big deal and I'm not saying he should've moved on that. I'm saying that he needs to accept that compromise is a thing that exists and makes things happen. He could've changed something else less important to please Sony and kept Molly exactly the same. I feel the need to stress that I am talking in general term and that he should've given in to the demands. I'm saying his mentality just does not work even today and much less so back then. He would be much more prolific if he was more open to compromise because you need to earn that opportunity for carte blanche by proving you're an asset by showing you're willing to play ball.

@@sirmel11 You have to remember that he was also using someone elses' money to fund HIS project. If this had been, say, kickstarted or pitched to Netflix then he could do whatever the hell he wanted without anyone telling him otherwise (insert south park netflix gag here). Because he went to other companies he had to play by their rules. Now it's possible that he went to several companies at the same time and Disney looked to be the most promising as they didn't request any changes which is why he walked out on CN and Sony which would completely justify the decision, but if he went through one-by-one then he had to weigh the pros vs the cons which involve their own risks so it's arguable to call it commendable or even agreeable. I know that netflix/kickstarter weren't a thing yet but you get my point as to the whole 'whoever is funding this is the decision maker' thing.

This is the only show that really got me stoked as a kid. Racing. Techy-ish. Space. Thats the perfect formula.

I did not like it as a kid, just could not see how awesome it is, rewatched it in the last two days. Its a visual masterpiece, the world building is just great.

Love to hear you talk about things I never heard of or forgot about. Keep up the good work & I would LOVE to see you cover Code Lyoko in the future.

Oban Star Racers had Yoko Kanno's theme over here in thw UK and I'm grateful because that's what I remember most.

Not gonna lie, when I saw the ending when I was young I cried. I watched every episode when it first aired and wanted to see more of it. The creators have said that they seriously want to make a sequel/spin-off in the future about 5 years ago and just a few weeks ago confirmed that they still hold onto that idea and even discussed plans for the story with fans!

I actually discovered this series when I was about 13 years old in a commercial for its two volumes release in the cartoon series Stargate Infinity, I got curious and watched it online. I’m 21 now and still think it was one of the best choices of curiosity I ever made. I loved this series and have seen it all the way through three times already. I’d be so happy if there were a second series/season!

that show was my first anime and that finale scarred me for life (in a good way???). Loved the show so much!

7 year old me was heartbroken when I found out this show wouldn’t continue. Haven’t seen it since and always felt like a fever dream when trying to recall it. Distinctly remember a scene where a black shadow character had tears running down his cheeks because he was trying to save the leads mom

Holy shit! I was 15. I loved this show. One of my first introductions to aneme.

My familiy often makes fun of the no noses thing, but you have to admit, the animation was awesome, and and storyline was top-notch!

This show.. My childhood. I can't remember the feeling i had when the closing credits rolled. It gave me the sensation of love family and care. I need to watch every episode again, so i can discover once more myself...

Gosh, I loved this show! It's one of those shows that totally su ked you in with the art/music/characters. Can't wait for the remastered version. Are they still Kickstarting it? Where are they at now?

It took me a long time to find this show again. I could remember a few scenes, but not the name for the longest time. I'm gonna have to get the disc set to see this again. It's been so long.

I don't cry over shows but this one grew heavely on me, she just really wanted her mother back.

They are going to make a Bluray kickstarter on February 2022. Also, they just released a video game demo on dreams, as a prototype for an upcoming game.
