WHAT HAPPENED TO MY WHEELCHAIR?!😱 | LIVING WITH CEREBRAL PALSY
In this video, WHAT HAPPENED TO MY WHEELCHAIR, we explain what is going on in Dallas' life. We hit a hurdle, but there is a silver lining. When something devastating happens like this, we were able to get a lot of help from the community and even received a backup wheelchair for Dallas to use in case tragedy hits again with her beloved power wheelchair.
Dallas has never used a manual wheelchair before. She only has every had her power wheelchair. Her cerebral palsy affects her arms which both have dystonia, or stiffness. Using a power wheelchair makes it much easier for Dallas to get around her environment without working so hard. Unfortunately, wheelchairs can break down, and this was the first time that she had a big problem with her wheelchair.
We are going to see just how well Dallas can maneuver a manual wheelchair so she will have some mobility until her power wheelchair gets fixed. These fixes can take some time, so we are challenging Dallas to learn a new skill that could potential help her. Let's see how she does!

Wheelchairs are the best! My son has CP also and he just got his wheelchair a few months ago. He loves being able to move around where he wants to go.

Wheelchairs are the best. Dallas you are doing an amazing job. I’ve been using a manual chair off and on since I was four years old, and I am 38 now, some days it will go really well and some days not so well. Just keep hanging in there and do the best you can.

Wheelchairs are the best! Advice: try removing the armrests and lowering the backrest Her footplate is too far away, try to move it so that her knees are at 90/95 degrees (that might give her more strength to push) Her wheels are too far back (the axle should be under her elbow). Check if the position of the axle can be adjusted. If so, move it forward. The chair will be more tippy but a lot easier to push and turn. The brakes are for getting in and out of the chair, sitting at a table or for uneven or moving surfaces (bus, stopping on a ramp…). I personally don’t use them when grabbing something at home because it may be useful to move the chair a bit, for example when opening the cabinet.

The brake of a manual wheelchair can be used for a few things. I usually use my brake for transfers of if im on an uneven ground and want to stat still.

Oh thanks for this!💚We are realizing that we need to use the break more often. Especially for transfers.
They make manual wheelchairs that have a special gearbox that makes it so you can use one hand for stroke patients and amputees. My mom was in a car accident that broke both legs and an arm. They brought her a chair she could use one handed. Ask the suppliers about that feature for her.

The brakes are for when you're ready to get out of the wheelchair. They help keep you from falling. I'd show a demo, but I no longer have a manual wheelchair. Hugs!!

My son is Levi. He is 11, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and autism, and uses a powerchair. However his power chair is currently broken and we are waiting for insurance to cover it yet. He’s been using a manual chair but like Dallas has some weakness in his arms as well. Just got a new scooter until we will be able to get the power chair repaired.

You know I don't know much about wheelchair brakes but I've been hearing this a lot from Bus videos like shuttle buses and school buses they say you always should turn off your power wheelchair or apply your brakes that way the chair can't move off of the wheelchair lift

Oh yes! Whenever Dallas goes on the lift we always have to make sure the power wheelchair is turned off. The manual wheelchair we haven’t used on a lift so far. This one doesn’t have the tie downs to be transported. Thankfully her power wheelchair is fixed and she can take that to school. Thanks for watching!

Dallas is so cute! I can’t get Alyssa to wear gloves. I do need to strap Alyssas feet down but I’ve lost that strap! I’m sure she will get the hang of it. I’m gonna take Alyssa to a wheelchair basketball game soon! I can’t wait to take her.

Oh thank you! It was difficult in the beginning to keep her glasses on because she was only one but now she doesn’t see good without them so she wants to wear them! Oh my goodness the basketball games are a lot of fun!

Hello i wanted to let dallas know i met 2 people who have CP. I met someone who has CP but not in a wheelchair at all. He can walk but does limp on his 1 side. He also has no problems with speech or anything else. I also met someone in school who has CP but does have a wheelchair but only uses it if she is going somewhere that is far because she can walk but not very far. Also she does have a problems with speech like some people may not understand what she is saying and she does has a communication device. So im glad dallas is getting the help she needs.

Awww yes yes yes, I am going through the same thing when I was very young I was 9 years old when I got my first electric wheelchair. So I use the manual wheelchair when I was 4 years old it was hard. I have cerebral palsy so I have use of my left hand and my right leg because of my CP. so yes when my electric wheelchair breaks down I had to use a manual wheelchair. Yes every five years we supposed to get a new electric wheelchair and yes it does take a long time for them to repair a broken electric wheelchair because Medicare or Medicaid has to pay it. Wow 4:21 that is great, the brakes are for when she’s is getting out of the chair so the wheelchair doesn’t move.

Aww i threw my manual out my dad bless him offered to push me but i dont like it but i am able to walking with support a little now im my dad does a cracking job helping me walking/stand plus he fixed my chair himself hes a massive Rock music fan i can't listen to the rolling stones start me up in the same way im so proud of him ❤ i love my chair my favourite is the supermarket and town my left side is weaker than my right so dalas i know how you feel but is actually easier for me to walk with support now than use a manual chair thanks to my PT 😊 everyone is different
