Beam judging has been brutal in Tokyo. It feels like 2017 worlds.

Thanks a lot! What I also wanted to understand was Carey's floor D, how she got from 6,7-6,8 to 6,3 in Quals and 6,2 in AA.

Why such a difficult connection to fufill C.R?? Like really? What kind of Coach allows that?

Thank you so much for explaining - I can only watch raw stream from Tokyo without any commentary, so this video really helps. Could do a video about Rebecca Andrade and Brooklyn Moors beams from AA? I was trying to figure out why their scores were so low

Rebeca I believe had lack of fluency and slow connection deductions, but to me it still wasn't enough for that low score. She was robbed.

could you make a video on jades beam score? ive seen a lot of people saying she was "robbed", but imo her E score is easily justifiable, and maybe a video could help more people understand why

The first connection is surely missed, yes, and not crediting the repeated element is fair, sure, but that second sequence should count as a connection in the sport of gymnastics. There is no "extra arm swing" as this video says. Her arms are swinging in the same direction they were already going as she lands, and then she swings them forward into the next element, in a completely normal pendulum motion. What is happening with her legs also shouldn't be seen as "extra knee bounce" to the extent that it discounts a combination. Her feet are firm on the beam and she doesn't bend her knees very far down. Have you seen ice skating jump combinations? People frequently raise slightly up in their knee after a landing before bending back down into the next jump. It's way too strict to be like "you need to instantly jump up for it to be a combination". Considering what has been allowed as a "combination" in gymnastics for decades, and the way slower combinations can be perfectly beautiful, we shouldn't be asking gymnasts to robotically perform everything at some exact speed. The rules even say there should be variations of tempo in a routine! Everything doesn't need to be "rebounding"! Like, what she actually deserves deduction for here is the form of those moves in general, hunching forward to do them. That's what the scoring system should be paying attention to.

per FIG rules, this does count as an extra swing and double bounce. It’s harsh but I’m not mad about it. I would much rather see connections like Qiu Qi Yuan’s being the norm.

For the sake of the CR they should've given the connection to her. Also, I'm shocked she didn't add an easy leap combo to make up for it. Oops

Ouch. I thought repeated elements wouldn't get base credit but would be fine for CV or requirement purposes.

Can you explain why Simone staying in could of cost the team a medal? Don't they count of 4 members scores? So wouldn't it end up being 3 members having to put up scores against teams of 4 which would be mathematically harder? This is the only thing I don't understand from the Olympics

  • @FlipFlyTumble

in the team final, only 3 gymnasts compete and the 3 scores count. (in qualifications, 4 gymnasts compete and only the 3 best scores count) simone had the 'twisties' so she was in danger of getting hurt mid-routine and not finishing which would give the team a low score, or she could fall a lot of times as she wasn't in a good headspace and get a low score as well.

I blame this on Tom Forster, he should have told her coaches to rework her dance series. But then again, I just don’t like Tom lol
