3:14 - Fun fact about the J-Crown: among the titles it represented was the *WWF Light-Heavyweight Championship,* which had been introduced by the WWF in 1981 for use by various promotions in Mexico and Japan. In fact that's why the J-Crown was vacated: the WWF recalled the title to finally use in their own promotion in 1997. What this means is that when he was holder of the J-Crown Ultimo Dragon represented & even _defended_ a WWF-branded championship among its other titles on _WCW television in the middle of the Monday Night Wars,_ and *neither company noticed.*

WCW at one time had by far the superior roster with big names like Hogan, Piper, Flair, Sting; technical geniuses like Benoit and Malenko; monsters like Giant and Meng; rising stars like Jericho, Booker, Goldberg and Guerrero; the nWo's and Flock; AND amazing high flyers like Rey, Chavo, Kidman, Ultimo Dragon and Psychosis. That's one hell of a roster.

The reason Otani won the Crusierweight championship is because WCW had organized an elaborate tournament for the belt but completely lost the plot on organizing it. So they threw it to NJPW to try and save it who opted (or demanded) that the first champion be one of their own. And 96 Liger wasn't going to try and save another WCW junior title himself so Otani got the bill.

I never really liked it. It looked good once it hit, but there was just way too much setup beforehand. I always thought of it as unrealistic and somewhat of an overkill (in kayfabe) to do on an opponent who needs to be out standing in order to not break out of that long sequence of preparation.

Rey Mysterio has had a storied career, and is rightly praised for his matches even today. But in my opinion he was never the same after his first big WCW knee injury. When he first arrived he was quickly dubbed "The Human Highlight Reel" because he displayed a level of athleticism and acrobatic skill that just took your breath away every time he got in the ring. It was magic. After the injury and rehab he came back with the same fire, but he definitely had lost a step. It's a tribute to him that he's still putting on great matches a quarter century after such a devastating injury.

I take some umbrage with the opening assertion that focusing on workrate was something new to WCW. WCW had even already HAD a crusierweight division back in 91/92 with a championship. Kind of borderline ignorant to not even mention that. Yes, Hogan's era had brought in (unfortunate) changes but WCW was still the same promotion that made sure that every main eventer was a capable worker from Flair, to Sting, to Vader, to Steamboat, to Windham. Even guys like Luger and Simmons were carryable. Until Hogan came in in 94 WCW/NWA was *always* the workrate alternative to WWE. Focusing on the Crusierweights was going back to their roots.
