What Happened to Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips?

Here are 5 things you need to know about the first Fish and Chips eatery in the US, Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips. Once a chain of over 800 units, where are they now, and what happened? And who invented fish and chips anyway?

I remember how DELICIOUS the fish and chips was. I also recall it being served draped in a faux sort of newspaper food liner. A real treat , sad some of the old fast food chains did not survive. The taste of Aurther Treachers far surpases what is available now.

I know ... since that law was passed, minced frozen fish patties aren't allowed to be fritter battered and deep fried in peanut oil. It's all Clarence Thomas' fault.

I use to love Arthur Treacher's as a kid. One of my favorite memories was from the mid to late 1970s going to an Arthur Treacher's location that was in Milford, OH on a Sat with my parents to get fish and chips. I'd love when they'd give us extra 'crunches' (that's what I'd call those little bits of lose fried batter from when they'd fry the fish)

I was fortunate enough to be employed by Arthur Teachers in Flushing, NY in 1981....the restuarant was always busy and a great place to work...I started out as a cleanup crew and ended up being a fry cook...the food was great (we were allowed a food budget to consume) we even traded food with McDonald's and the pizza joint next door to us. Everyone at McDonald's, Gloria's pizza and AT got tired of eating the same food every day so we traded food with them...everyone though it was a win-win situation ..and it was. A great memory of my youth and the food we good at Arthur Teachers 👍...glad I worked there.

For some reason, this place really stands out in my memory. I remember Arthur Treacher being on TV when I was a kid, and I happened to be visiting California the summer of 1969, and I got to eat at a AT's. It was so good! I was 10 years old and i remember my Dad really enjoying the meal and telling all of us how much he remembered enjoying the fish and chips when he was stationed in England during WWII. He said fish and chips was the only food you could buy in the towns near base, and it was a heck of a lot better than GI chowhall food. Great memories. I stopped at one of the remaining AT's in Cuyahoga Falls/Akron, Oh a couple of years ago, it sure didn't hold up to my memories. If you want a good approximation of really fish and chips, about the only way I can find them these days is in the occasional pub here in the States, every once in a while I will find one that actually knows how to make authentic fish and chips. The other thing you can do is take off for the maritime provinces of Canada, those guys and gals know how to make them! They use real beef tallow, that is key.

In the mid 60s to mid 70s Corvallis, Oregon had a great fish and chip house called the Tower of London. They had great batter fried cod, I believe, and plank fries. They also batter fried their chicken. Great place. The exterior looked like a Todor building. Its still used as a restaurant today. Never did hear why they closed.

Thanks so much for this and all your videos! I love your channel (and your nutty "British" accent attempt). When I was growing up in the early & mid 70s we moved back and forth from NYC to NJ. In Jersey, we had an Arthur Treacher's and my dad would occasionally bring it home when we had a wee money to do so (we had very little if any fast food or takeout like that when I was a kid). When we used to visit my grandma in Miami, they had a Sambos, that eventually became an Arthur Treachers in the late 70s/early 80s, and then it became Long John Silvers. I worked there (LJS) as a teen and boy did they take advantage of their teen workers and had some seriously bad practices with respect to cleanliness. I actually also tore both my rotator cuffs working there. Then it became Dunkin Donuts and then I think Papa John's Pizza. I missed Arthur Treachers! Here in eastern NC we have Captain D's. It is not bad.

It was my first payroll job as a 16-year-old. I was a cook in the Mentor, Ohio restaurant. I remember one Saturday having to attend training and they showed us movies of how to cook the fish with a corny piano playing the Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips tune after each step in the process. I remember the batter came in a plain white bag and you mixed it with 7.25LBS of water. You weighed the water in a pail and then mixed it in the batter. They had a Chicken Sandwich with "Secret" dressing. It was Russian Dressing (plot spoiler) and squeeze cheese. I made a fish sandwich using the Russian Dressing and Tartar sauce and it was yummy. We had to throw out all the food that stayed out under the heat lamps too long. I would smuggle one of these over dry fish back to the prep area and douse it with Russian and wolf it down as quickly as possible :-) Good Times!

i was a fry cook at Arthur Treacher's on Hampton Avenue in St. Louis in 1975. The only other specifically fish 'n' chip chain were restaurants named H. Salt Fish 'N' Chips. We were instructed to define the fish as "North-Atlantic White Fish." We cooked everything in high quality peanut oil to avoid taste transfer of other foods being cooked in the same vat. I LOVED the food there, and never got tired of it. I remember the uniform shirt being as colorful as the Arthur Treacher sign outside, which made them great at hiding the inevitable oil stains. That high school job ended about a year later, and it was some time afterwards that I heard that location had shuttered. Soon, Arthur "Treacherous" -- as I lovingly called it -- no longer existed in St. Louis.

Arthur Treacher's needs to make a comeback, somehow. Is that one in Columbus still there? I read here that there are still four left in Ohio.

OMG! This satisfies my need for 1970s Nostalgia!!! As a kid I have a fleeting memory of being at an Arthur Treachers in Westfield Massachusetts. My poor dad, who had been born and raised on an island, loved (and loves) fish and this, and the all you can eat fish plate at the Howard Johnsons (also in Westfield back in the day), was what he had to work with instead of catching his own blue fish like back in his earlier days. I don't exactly understand it, but I could listen to fast food history all day. In fact, if you have a lot of episodes--I JUST MIGHT!

My family and I are big fans of Arthur Treacher's ( & Nathan's Hot Dags). I remember as a kid my dad taking our family to Authur's for fish & chips as a treat. We were disappointed when the locations closed down in NJ. However, I heard there is a location located in the food court in Bridgewater Mall in Bridgewater, NJ. Next time I'm in the area I will pop in for a bite to eat.

Two things: 1) The fish & chips in the 1800s and still today were/are wrapped in newsprint. That's a cheap paper source used to print newspapers. I know there were some that used the paper with ink, but for the most part, and certainly today, the paper was inkless. 2) There may be more mentions, but I do see one below. There is an extended story involving the Miami Subs chain and Arthur Treacher's, Kenny Roger's and Nathan's. Here, in Florida, there were dozens of these Miami Subs locations offering the quartet all over the state. I believe they even had a spot in a Florida Turnpike rest area or two. I got a bunch of the story as to how the heck they all were merged a couple decades ago. I wanted to know and asked as I traveled the state. I woulda made a video if KZread was around then. :) Can't remember it now, except it involved the Miami Subs group acquiring the other 3 to make a very weird amalgam of choices. I recall in the original Kenny Roger's the chickens whirled in a roaster you could watch. You could also see much of the rest of the offerings, green beans, red potatoes, etc, heating in the counter area ready to serve. I recall I was told the Miami Subs version had the chickens roasted elsewhere and heated them to serve at the restaurant location. About Kenny Rogers: I know 4 (Lakeland, Tampa, Ocala, New Port Richey. Never in Orlando) Kenny Roger's structures still stand today as something else. The one in Ocala now has a walk-up medical facility that was once part owned by our former governor-now Senator Rick Scott. That medical office chain nearly put Scott in jail before becoming governor.

Super weird to finally learn about this place! I grew up with an AT restaurant (in Racine, WI... home of the last "Red Barn"!) nearby, and remember stopping there more than a few times. My mother was Catholic, so not sure if THAT was why... I mean, it's not like there is a shortage of places in Wisconsin to get a Friday fish fry. I remember really loving the "hush puppies" as a kid. Had zero idea who Arthur Treacher was until watching this video; Just assumed he was some guy who started/owned the franchise.

I was doing electrical permit runs for ADT installs all around southern Florida in 2015 and I rubbernecked when I saw the Arthur Treacher's logo on a building somewhere in my rear view mirror on W Atlantic Drive in Pompano Beach. After I picked up my permits, I did circles looking for it. I finally discovered that they served Arthur Treacher's fish & chips at Miami Subs. I hadn't had their fish since the early 90's at Frenchtown Mall in Monroe, Michigan. When that location closed, I was devastated! Now, whenever I am anywhere near a Miami Subs, I stop in for Arthur Treacher's fish & chips!! And they are as good today as they were when I was a kid. Still tastes the same!

They had print outs of their legacy to read. They don't have the lantern sign anymore however. I highly recommend the Ohio ones.
