Also, for many of us is the peace of mind of having a manual safety. I have the Beretta 92fs Inox (essentially the same gun being demonstrated in the video without the custom work) and I have trained myself to release the safety on the draw. The action to release the safety is simply to push the thumb, which is in its normal position when holding the gun, forward against the safety lever - no rotational action is necessary with the thumb, just straight forward. This is the way it was designed to be used but many owners do not do that. The safety system is part of the decocking mechanism. The Sig P series, which is also DA/SA, has a decocker, but it is a _dedicated_ decocker, which means no safety. When you press down on the Sig decocker it decocks the gun and then springs back into position and thus does what a decocker is supposed to do - drop the hammer safely, but it has no inherent safety consideration beyond that point. With the Beretta the decocker does not spring back but stays in the safe position. When in this position the Beretta has no "wall", the trigger simply travels front to back in the trigger guard limply. The gun CANNOT go off due to anything involving the trigger. The moment the decocker/safety is pushed forward the gun is immediately hot in DA mode. Now I earlier said that I take the gun off safety on the draw. In addition to this I have also trained myself to cock the hammer as I am raising the gun to acquire my sights. Now the gun is in single action mode. I am considering a hammer modification to make the cocking easier but I can accomplish this in reasonable time with the hammer which came with the gun. Frankly, I am very surprised that no one ever talks about the option of cocking the hammer in any of the videos I've watched online. Of course one does not have to be in single action to engage a threat. As Mas has already pointed out, the transition from the DA trigger pull to the SA pull is not that big of a deal, but I like the option of being able to cock the gun for SA if time permits.

@@bostonblunt Not using hollow point defensive ammo goes against decades of research stating that it is the best individual defensive choice in nearly all calibers. If you need to punch through windshields regularly, I'd suggest a rifle of some sort. And if you need that, you're probably SWAT or Special Forces anyhow. For regular citizens to defend against 2 and 4 legged attackers who don't carry windshields with them or shoot out the front of cars, a modern HP round is absolutely going to perform better than JHP or solid core rounds.

I certainly agree with your comments about the training and safety aspects of the SA/DA action design. I’ve always appreciated being able to hold my thumb on the hammer while re-holstering. I own a number of striker-fired guns; my best is the HKVP9SK but even with that one I always breath a little easier when I hear it click into the holster. That is also a training issue but at the end of the day my personal preference is for SA/DA handguns either semi-auto or revolver.

@@tomyen187 Not at all and that’s obviously a personal preference. I normally carry a commander-size 1911, and by comparison, the VP9SK is really easy to carry. I have a number of micro-compacts and none of them are reliable enough for my preferences. Second after my VP9 is my Walther PPS M2…that’s about as small as I go on 9mm carry guns. I also don’t buy into the higher capacity argument so I’m unimpressed with higher capacity carry guns for civilian personal protection. If I was still in the counter insurgency business I’d take a different view.

I like the mag release on the H&K VP9. You can drop the mag with your strong hand middle finger. Many do not like it because it is different than most other handguns. It works very well for me as does the three separate interchangeable grips that allows the firearm to fit my hand better than most handguns.

Maybe I'm mistaken but it seem like not many younger folks like ourselves aren't paying as much attention to the older folks who have so much personal experience and not just theory like a lot of the younger instructors out there. We listen to everyone, but we've found that instructors like Mas have boiled their talking points down to the most important and crucial bits. They cut out a lot of the fat and flair others use to keep their audiences entertained and for us that makes the lessons much more digestible. Thank you Mas and everyone at WC.

I've carried a Beretta 92FS 9mm for service from 2003-2019. I've never touched the Beretta 92G 9mm, but I can say that I wasn't a fan of the 92FS. I shot 'expert' with the Beretta starting my first time handling it, but it always felt cumbersome and slow. Back in... maybe 2012, I picked up a Springfield XD in .45 and a 4" barrel. On my first day at the range, the recoil pattern absolutely shocked me! I was amazed at how the weapon smoothly returned to my aimpoint after every squeeze of the trigger. As one can imagine, it made follow-up shots very quick as I didn't need to fully re-aim my weapon, just a quick adjustment, and I was good to shoot. I read that Beretta has a better reputation than I'm used to hearing, but after carrying a Springfield XD, I can't imagine myself carrying much else (except the compact versions, of course).

Absolutely total respect for Mr. Ayoob. First gun guru I read when I started getting into handgun shooting and CCW. HAVING SAID THAT. I'm happy Some in the 2a community can Afford a premier brand handgun. Asking what Mr.Ayoob carries on the Wilson Combat channel is just a tiny Bit obvious. It's s great infomercial for Wilson combat.

Great video, I too change Guns way to often. My latest favorite is the Sig P365 XL. I just bought the grip frame for the newer 17 round macro with 3 magazines. The problem now is adequate holsters. For safety reason I won’t carry a striker fired gun without a well engineered holster.

The 92X is great. Comes with a lot of the LTT upgrades, stock, for about the same price as the older 92 models.

A number of well considered questions and answers. I've carried for sixty plus years BUT I carried my employer's weapon, most often a 1911. Second to that was (of course) .38 Special. I have no reason to argue with people who prefer something else but the body of my experience mandates that I stay with the two above.

I guess I would not have guessed that! I loved my Beretta 92 but sold it a long time ago. With some possible regrets. So Mr. Ayoob carries a 1911, a Beretta 92 style pistol as well as a Glock. So the big question is, did the military get it wrong? Great video!

I carry two platforms based on time of year and clothing and ability to conceal. I am a lifetime 1911 fan so often I am carrying my Colt Commander or my Colt Defender or Officer's ACP. When I choose to, or desire more capacity, I have two "go-to " guns that are just magnificent; My Wilson Combat customized Beretta 96A1 in .40S&W when I can hide it, or my Wilson Combat Beretta 92FS Compact. Wilson took my two wonderful smooth accurate Berettas and transformed them into Magnificent Berettas!!!!! I can not say enough, how wonderful the Wilson Combat Berettas truly are. Just the best...

I grew up with double-action revolvers, happily made the transition to striker-fired pistols, and never saw the need for anything more complicated, such as a safety or decocking lever.

Hip, hip hooray for caliber diversity! You can like 45s and 9s. I like that thinking! I will favor my 45 and still have a 9 as a backup. It’s a great combo and makes sense. Cheers Mr Massad and keep talking caliber diversity!
