    I bought my first bait caster over the summer. Also over the summer (last summer) I got super into bass fishing and that's when I started watching your videos. When I bought my bait caster, I was on a tight budget like a am today (I'm only 13) so I purchased this no name brand off of amazon which has a gear ratio of 6:3:1. It was also tough learning because I'm a lefty. I never understood what the three numbers meant until this video. I have to say, after watching (mostly) you, flair, tackle junky, KTBTV, Jon B and 1rod I catch so many more fish and my knowledge on this sport is forever growing. My point is, your videos have helped me so much just like they have helped thousands and thousands of people, and I thank you for that👍🏼

    good explanation, never fully understood the gear ratio being a newer fisherman. From the beginning what i could understand was 7 was a good all around and i have bought two. with my first with a 7' and second with 7'9" pole and have been semi productive. My whole tackle has been based around your videos. i really appreciate your specific breakdowns of all types of bass fishing!

    I bought a spinning rod & reel combo 2 yrs ago, it was the 1st one I bought since I started fishing again. It's the Shakespeare Catch More series Surf/Pier to be exact. It's 7' long with a 5.2:1 ratio, the sad part is, it's only been off a pier once the rest of the time I'm pond fishing with it. I'm looking into getting another setup n this video helped out with the questions I was gonna be asking the salesman at big box store n he might not even fish so I'm glad u put this video out there

    Easy to grasp explanation of gear ratios. Years of experience has taught me that faster is not always better.. When Carolina rigging for example, you can actually over work the bait with a 7 or 8 speed reel…many of us Tourney guys use a 6.1 or 28 IPT (inches per turn )reel for the Carolina technique. Time on the Water!! Like most things in Bass fishing will help you figure out what works best for you. Rob

  • @ST4R1SM1NE
    @ST4R1SM1NE8 жыл бұрын

    Good Explanation Gene! The second Number in the ratio would add to the "Inches Per Turn" category! Example: 6.2:1 or 6.3:1 would be 27"-29" of line being fed back to the Spool, a 6.4:1 or 6.6:1 would add only a few more inches per turn like 28-31" Like you stated its not really necessary to know for people who are starting out! My reel of choice for All around Fishing would be a 6.4:1 or a 6.6:1 Reel! For Top Water, Jigs, T-Rigs....etc a 8.1:1, 8.9:1 or even a 9.2:1 ratio is what id use! Keep the Videos Coming, Your doing a great Job!

    Great video Gene! I like all your videos keep it up. But, 8:1 gear is low and you would have to work less to pedal up hill. And you would be pedaling your but off and going slow on flat land. But, since the spool is rotating at more revolutions it will retrieve the line faster. 5:1 is taller and you would have a harder time pedaling up hill. But would be moving much faster on flat land. With the fishing reel it will retrieve slower because the spool is spinning slower making less rotations.

  • @mikesanchezgsxr

    I generally stick to a 7-1 and just slow down or speed up how fast I turn the handle depending on the different situation I'm fishing. I also look for higher drag just so I can use the reel for more types of baits/fishing. I also usually swap out the handles to a little longer handle for leverage for use for crank boats or drop shorting to pull them out of the vegetation. I generally make my reels usable for pretty much any situation so I if I only have one with me I don't have to worry about anything it'll just do the job.
