Not a good comparison bro, I do shoot and paint a bit as well. U can use a flat brush to paint something which can be made with a round brush or a filbert and get same effect. You definitely can't replace the image quality of a shot using 70-200 f2.8 lens at 200mm f2.8 with a18-200 5.6 lens. I do get irritated when someone with no photo knowledge tells me. No wonder you use expensive lens and they kind of think that's what gives better pictures. I challenge them to use my camera. But to say Gear does not matter at all is definitely not correct. Your gear does have credit to an extent in all the images you make. Otherwise there is no reason for all the guys who say Gear does matter, to carry the most latest gears for their shoot.

Gear lists are important if you are to ensure that you don’t leave house without some vital pieces. This information helped me greatly on my maiden safari this July 2021. I took 2 bodies (Z6, Z62), three lens (24-70, 70-200, 200-500) but unfortunately I left my extender. 500mm wasn’t always sufficient especially in areas where the animals are far from the road. All in all I had a great first safari and learnt a lot about animals in the wild. Masai Mara was incredible. Oh, btw, on my next trip if it ever happens I will take sensor cleaning fluid, dust blower, some form of clamp to secure camera that does video recording as there is a lot of shake in these vehicles. Great video. Yes, this is what I learned too. In the beginning I was just focused on the gear, now I know you better spend the time to think about how you can increase the chances / moments for taking pictures. This counts more in my opinion. And I reduced the geat & Equipment I have substantial in the last 1.5 years. As I am into bird photography and especially smaller forest and water birds, I use longer lenses such as a Canon 800mm 5.6 and a Canon 400mm 2.8 for low light - no compromise here. I simply can’t get close enough to my subjects typically. And a Canon 1DX Mark II and Canon 7D Mark II. Happy shooting :)

What a fantastic "What's in my bag".Not for the gear, but for the organisation and attitude. Of course pros need top lenses etc, but I can still enjoy shooting with my 5DIII, 7DII, Sigma 150=600 Sport and my 70-200 f4 IS. It all about being out there with nature, learning about wildlife and landscapes and getting the important messages across.

Yes I like the simplicity. The weight is important for me as well. Nikon D7200 with Tamron 150-600 G2 is everything I need for wildlife :)

In a moving motor vehicle and bumpy road it's better if the lens is sitting vertically to avoid misalignment of the lens elements.

For all the people who say gear is not important. It's just a joke. Gear is one of the most important things in photography. Why does he not use a 5D Mark I instead. Ask him to use the sigma 150-600 instead of the 500 f4. Why does he need a 300. He can use a convert or on the 70-200 f2.8 instead. I went to Russia to shoot bears using 70-200 with a 2x tele. Though everything has been focussed and framed properly, the quality is shitty. I rented myself a 200-400 f4 lens for my next trip to Africa to shoot wildlife. So Gear is also important for good photography, but u need skill to know how to use them. Gear alone won't give u better pictures

Exactly. It's easy to say 'gear is not important' when you just happen to be shooting with top of the line expensive gear. They are just tools, but great tools really help in doing a great job.

@@nsr150sp1 i agree. though 5D mark iii or a 7D ii will be beter for using for astro photography and shooting wildlife with that super shutter speed. But the essence of my comments is that the same photographer with the same skill using a 70-200 f2.8 with a converter and using a 200-400 f4 lens will be totally different. I learned it the hard way when i compare my pictures of bears in kamchatka vs the pictures of lions in africa.

Gear is important, because you kind of need a camera to produce a photo with, in this case. You don't need the best equipment to produce likeable photos, but you might need it for effects like a very blurry background. In wildlife photography, having lenses with f/2.8 is really useful, especially in woodland areas. However, the telephoto f/2.8 lenses are quite expensive, the ones I know of.

to be honest you can carry so much gear if you are in the vehicle. as for me I only use Canon 90D with 100-400mm mkII.. that is all. if i have a choice i will buy a 1DXm3 maybe or a Sony A9II or A7R4. most of the time I walk around to find animals, which means to say you need something light and mobile, I don't carry tripod too because it slows me down only. by carrying too much camera also takes time to switch and you might miss the moment.

Good gear especially for wildlife is a MUST if you want great photos!!!😬

While I agree with the premise of that statement about gear to a point, I also find it slightly funny that the only people I've heard say "its not the gear that matters" are the pros with all the high end gear. Take a Canon T5i and as kit lens on safari and you'll see gear does matter! Do you need the best gear available? No but you do need some minimal benchmark level so that you have adequate AF speed, fast aperture, etc to capture the wildlife you are most passionate about that will produce pictures acceptable to your standards. What brand of gear truly doesn't matter, you can get great wildlife pictures with Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fuji, etc. they all function equally well. Not having certain gear, while not stopping you from doing wildlife photogragphy as a whole, can limit your options as to what wildlife subjects you can properly capture in action.

Hi Frank, you are absolutly right. My best work would not be what it is without high end gear... but I started many years ago learning the ropes with average equipment. The point i mean (and perhaps was not clear enough) is that people don't need to go buy things for $1000s and think they are going to be automatically good... the skill and patients you need is the bigger part as it takes time and practice. People should be less gear obsessed and more focussed on developing their eye, camera knowledge and make connections to people who will get you in the right position to take great pictures. You have a great collection Klaus, some important items missing in your kit are a the newest Canon 90D, a good speedlight, if you want the best Canon 600EX-RT, a good better beamer, a cable release, a good light source and a rain cover. If you add these items to your set up, you are good to go for any given situation. Good luck keep going.

The 16-35 lens you have is it a F2.8 one or F4 one? Anyway you are packed for any given photo situation. What is missing in your line up is an external speedlite and perhaps a better beamer, particularly if you are shooting birds in your safaris.

Taking images of birds and flowers are a photography "specialty." I learned that when I tried to photograph a Cooper's hawk that had captured a squirrel. The hawk couldn't fly high and had to drag its prey. I tried photographing it from 40 feet away with my 70-300 at 300 mm. That's when I learned a 300 mm for birds is inadequate. This year I bought a Nikon 200-500, 5.6 and it's barely adequate. Big glass needed for little birds.

Full time job. I spent many years in lifestyle & fashion photography. Only in recent years have i transitioned over to Wildlife. Tuff at first but if you keep working at it (as in full time) you can make a career out of it!!! Work hard

@@stubones do you use one and have you tried both cameras, I have the 500 prime the 300 prime, the 70-200 f2.8 and the 17-40, its my landscape lens, I use that mainly with my new 1dxmkiii the now, that is a decent camera, but not as good as the R5, I think that body shades it, just!! if you pixel peep at 400%, the 1dmkiin has legendary autofocus, the reason a lot of pros overlooked the mk3 and went straight to the mk4, just saying mate!!!

Underlining the point about non-importance of the gear, he's using a 15-year old Canon 1D Mark 2 that has ... 8 MP. It has maximum ISO of 1600, 45 focus points, and 1.3 crop factor; BUT ... it shoots 8.5 fps, and can handle shutter speeds up to 1/8000. Looking at this and knowing that this guy was able to produce good photos with this camera, we can all select the proper camera for wildlife. A very interesting and entertaining video!

Actually, he is using the 1dx MkII check video at 1:48. This was top of the line Canon camera at the time video was released.

camera is like a gun and you shoot it. now its ur abiltiy how good shooter you are . agree ur views plus surprised u have only under 900 sub. consider me one putting you on 840

Sorry but total BS. If you think gear doesn't matter, go ahead with a standard 24-105 and try to take some close-up pictures of small birds....how close can you get even in a full camo cover? 10m? 15m before you scare them off? Oh, yeah, you can crop.... like 5 times to fill the frame. But you can already predict how that will look like even off a high mpix sensor. So yes, gear does matter, quite a lot actually. If you want to achieve a specific goal, you need the tool for that.

How difficult is it to shoot animals from a GUIDED SAFARI where you LITERALLY are 20 feet from an elephant? Why don't you try to shoot a fast tiny hawk in flight and still get razor sharp photos with a USED $800 70-200 2.8? Now THAT takes skill!

What's a "selfie?" I think I know. Those are the ones where trees, light poles and other objects come out of people's heads or ears. Other "selfies" show amputated arms, legs or half a body.
