What Friendship Really Means | Simon Sinek

Friendship is an investment, not a transaction. We don't show up for our friends based on how many times they've shown up for us. We show up because we know that when we need them most, they'll be there.

Simon is an unshakable optimist. He believes in a bright future and our ability to build it together.
Described as “a visionary thinker with a rare intellect,” Simon has devoted his professional life to help advance a vision of the world that does not yet exist; a world in which the vast majority of people wake up every single morning inspired, feel safe wherever they are and end the day fulfilled by the work that they do.
Simon is the author of multiple best selling books including Start With Why, Leaders Eat Last, Together is Better, and The Infinite Game.

It can be devastating, even traumatizing, to invest so much into people who you think are your friends only to have them let you down when you really need them.

Im no expert but ive always have this sense of 'i dont expect anything in return' kind of mentality when i 'invest' in my friends. I know without a shadow of a doubt that the ones that really care for me will be there when i need them and those who wont arent worth my time, even if it was a friendship of years. Real friendships are the ones that take you out of your comfort zone and make you better, talk about uncomfortable things and make you see better about yourself because at the end of the day, if they care for you, they want you to be better. Listening to only those who say you are as good as you are aren't friends, they are just acquaintances.

Imagine being the friend on the other side of that.... and then having the coin flipped almost without understanding.... talk about mutually devastating.

@@rtanderson2 take it this way, if you want to have good friends, you have to be a good friend yourself. If you want to have a best friend, you have to be, and want, the best for them too. But dont have the thought that they will do something for you in return. That way of thinking, of mutual needs just leads to friendship being a transaction which ends up being temporary.

@@RaZeyLWindBladE but it's completely wrong if it's just one sided friendship....like you put all the effort believing that someday he'll be there when you need and when the time comes in desperate need they don't even bother...that hurts like hell..so it's not just about effort from your side it's all about choosing....choose your friends carefully... don't make your childhood friend your best friend unless you feel that he is!!! Sometimes you just believe that he is your best friend but he just benefits from you all the time.....choose your friends carefully....

The most valuable thing in the world is a good friend who just be there for you and you will be at their support unconditionally ,, no plans ,, no blames, no justifications needed, accepts who you are the way you are ,, no judgements. you don’t choose your family but you choose your friends and they become part of you.. lucky who have good friends 👍

Why would a person ever consider someone a friend if they never done anything meaningful for you? Single sided relationships are not friendly they’re parasitic. Trust should follow reputations if you don’t want to continually find yourself as a victim.

@@suryahr307 He mentioned “keeping score” as if that is a bad thing. You can call it keeping score or label it as something else but we should always “ keep score” in every part of life in a way in which assesses the respect given to all persons including yourself. If all he is talking about is a duration of time without you needing any help than I would say ... a duh. If the one minute clip doesn’t provide proper context than they shouldn’t of posted it.

This all sounds magical and fun, yet If I do 1000 things for someone and they do nothing for me, there would be something wrong with me. Why would I feel compelled to stay in a relationship where I would be constantly giving with the Hope's one day I'll be needy enough to recieve. It's like breathing out and never being able to take a breath in. Even Steven along the yellow brick road for me.

Any relationship needs time invested. You cannot expect to leave you friends for other people, adventures, etc and expect the levels to be the same when you’ve stopped investing. Everyone has a right to invest in who they want to invest in. But there are consequences.

The Givers experience all the Colours of Life ... They fulfill the purpose of this Existence ... And they receive from many sources (oftentimes the unexpected). With that said, a lot of true joy comes when we stop comparing ourselves with those around us, while knowing that we need to take care of ourselves as well. Only then will the ripple be as constructive as possible ...
