I listened to this while taking a two hour walk in Ecuador. I just wanted to say this was truly one of the best and inspiring talks. Thanks for sitting “in the mud” with me.
To everyone focusing on the “skipping of the line for the free bagel”, you’re proving the very point of the story. The focus is on the negative of the story and you’re having difficulties seeing anything but that. Take a moment and readjust your perspective. Listen a few more times and really grasp the point of that story. I’ve got faith in some of you 🥂

5:26 that is true. My nephew made it through; he was skinny and I am that aunt who wanted to cover him in cottonwool… but he was that person who looked out for the one on the left and right. Today he is a proud Navy Seal. And he told me: “Family and friends should be taught what the Navy Seals are taught… then we’d be a stronger unit.”

Before you excuse yourself inline and take two bagels: ask yourself Can I be the person who supplies the bagels for free? The answer is, yes I can. No need to take what you don't need when there is plenty for everyone. The story of the five loaves and fishes came to mind. (Not particularly a religious person) The moral of the story is, no need to grab or be impatient with what your heart desires, The Univers is in constant supply. Thanks for the motivation to believe in something different.
The bagel story: better ending would’ve been instead of waiting in the queue for 60 minutes, value your time and buy one. It cost way less than what you can own in 60 minutes. What value do you put on your time. Unless of course you want to socialise in the queue and enjoy the downtime. Pushing the queue, jumping ahead no matter how dressed up he put it, it was morally wrong.

Ahhh the free bagel, yes. For those who had been in a run and get freebies (drinks/foods) will know. U can que to get your choices or just grab and go. Sometimes I queue and sometimes i just grab and go. Thanks Simon
I am a bit confuse with what he said about the first part when he was talking about the bagel. He skipped the line to get the bagels, not one but two. In his teaching he said we don’t always have to follow the rules but just as long as we don’t stop someone else (not his exact words but I’m trying to paraphrase) what if the last person in line that waited all this time doesn’t get any because he skipped the line, isn’t that getting in someone else’s way? Hindering someone else’s progress?
@TunaIRL

Would you say someone who deliberately ran faster in order to get in front of the guy who doesn't happen to be left with a bagel is getting in the way of them too? Hindering their progress in the same way?

@@dalinelightbourne4502 They have the exact same effect. The last person in line might not get any bagels because of them. Isn't that what you were considering? Let's say there's 2 spots to get the same bagels. One where you can take your time, examine them and choose which one you want and another where you're just given a bagel and you go on your way. One forms a queue and on the other one people just get their bagel and leave. No queue forms. Would you say you're worried about the people at the back of the queue not getting any bagels?

@@TunaIRL I guess I’m looking at it differently. If he’s already in line waiting and someone skips the line versus he’s not in the line yet and someone deliberately runs faster to get in the line before him is different. @@dalinelightbourne4502 The person at the end of the queue could've ran faster. Or went to the queue faster instead of talking with their friend for 10 minutes and then getting into it. Or any other thing they could've done to make sure they get a bagel if they truly want it. Maybe even just go up and take a bagel.
Very important to prioritize the important stuff! A great read, in my opinion, is "Doing What Matters: The Power of Purposeful Productivity"

re: the bagels. The philosopher Kant, while often flawed, presented a moral argument that would be very applicable here. Kant introduced a thing called the Categorical Imperative, which loosely says that a thing passes a test of ethics, if everyone were to do it. So, imagine if everyone stepped up and reached through a line of people to get themselves a bagel instead of waiting their turn in an orderly way! Chaos. Simon has good words, usually. However, his illustration of the bagel story is NOT his best advice.
Very inspiring. Thanks.

The bagel example is a poor example. By taking bagels ahead of your turn you are literally preventing others from getting their turn and possibly their bagel if there wasn't enough. Surely there are examples where you can "bend" the rules and not harm others (get in their way)?? After all, if you'd been faster (worked harder) you would have been further ahead in the line
Brilliant...I just got fed. thankyou

Agreed. And the other person didn't just see the line, they saw what more joyful things they could do with their time than wait for something they didn't really want; they valued their quality time over a food item they didn't want, or need.

Thank you for your most valuable advice. I do my best to be that way with my friends old & new. Empathy is a good medicine for both sides. ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
I am always amazed by the very simple lessons contained in Simon Sinek,s podcasts.
The critical thing missing with this advice about reaching out to a friend misses the nuance of reaching out to the 'right kind of friend'. Reach out to the 'wrong friend' and you may end up in a worse place.
Grateful to watch this video, this is a great message for everyone, thank you simon❤

BEST SINEK VIDEO EVER!!! 🤩 PURE GOLD 🥹🥰✨
The video is about 5 lessons learned from Simon Sinek. Here are the lessons: Rule number one: go after what you want. Don't be afraid to break the rules as long as you don't get in the way of others. Rule number two: take accountability for your actions, both good and bad. Rule number three: take care of each other. Help others and ask for help when you need it. Rule number four: practice empathy and perspective taking. Understand where others are coming from. Rule number five: focus on serving others. True meaning in life comes from helping others.
Fwiw, Mental health means it's okay to be sad. It's synonymous with mental fitness.

Yes, Florence Nightingale was credited with improving hand washing in war hospitals (particularly the Crimea) to reduce infections. It’s just as important today but pre 1920’s (when antibiotics came in) more so.
Thank's so much. It was a pin point of true motivation words. 🎉
Also, asking for help is humbling. It's not humiliating unless the other person is a jerk about it (thats what humiliating literally means)
very rare that someone will help trust yourself and keep trying

You overlooked the point that by doing so, he forewent being able to CHOOSE the type of bagel he got by just helping himself...the people in the line held their place so that they could choose the flavour they most liked..nobody's going to beat someone up for that, be annoyed maybe, but also begrudgingly admitting to themselves that they too could help themselves if it didn't matter to them to accept whatever they got by random

Also missing the point of reaching out to friends when lonely. Oxytosin is the neurotransmitter of connection. Recieving emotional connection produces oxytosin. So does thinking about our friends and reaching out to them. It the perception of connection that creates oxytosin. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter of seeking /persuit. More like domination than connection.
That was amazing
How is this having such an emotional effect on me? Damn.

I cannot take the tip skipping line and take bagel. If it is allowed, there is no line but chaos. Most people just want two free bagels, not have to be certain type. Getting what we want in life should not take advantage of not being ethical. Most people just assume that sneaky in and grab bengals are not allowed, not ethical. They are the honest tax payers, desirable citizens. Bad tip for public but truly that’s most successful people take. They shed that part never want to mention it later.

My history research reveals it was Ignaz Semmelweis who pioneered hygiene and hand sterility before surgery. "Semmelweis discovered that the incidence of infection could be drastically reduced by requiring healthcare workers in obstetrical clinics to disinfect their hands. In 1847, he proposed hand washing with chlorinated lime solutions at Vienna General Hospital's First Obstetrical Clinic, where doctors' wards had three times the mortality of midwives' wards." Oliver Wendell Homes Jr was only 6 years old when Ignaz made this correlation! Do your homework Simon Sinek!
