What Figure Skating Boot Should I Buy?

Спорт

Sorry for my dog running around in the background and for my dog crying haha
I am in no way a professional fitter so please take my opinions with a grain of salt! This is just based on my personal experiences.
If you have any questions about the boots I mentioned, please leave a comment, I'll try to respond as best as I can. I know I left out a few brands, I'm sorry, I just don't have any experience with the other boots. I tried to keep this concise, I have tried lower level jacksons and edeas if you have questions about those. Also I would like to add that the Avanta boots come in different stiffness levels, the pair I have are just the low level version.
If you're interested in purchasing any of the spare boots I have featured in this video, please reach out to me and let me know, we can talk about it!
My instagram is @adultskater, I'd love it if you gave me a follow and you're more than welcome to DM me there!

    I'm just about to start learning to skate. I live in England and there aren't many skating rinks around. But I've recently found one near me and I thought it'd be a nice hobby. 😊 I've been binge watching videos on tips and also different types of boots. 😋

    It would be helpful if you provided the models of the skates, not just the brand. For instance a Riedell Motion (my skates) is a quite different beast from a Riedell Soar (a "casual" skate). I ended up with the skates I have because first, Riedell was the only brand I really knew at the time, then looking at their list I looked at where I was ("instructional"--as in taking skating classes) and bumped it up a level because I'd just had an accident where I sprained an ankle pretty badly so I wanted a bit more than typical ankle support for that level. So "advanced instructional" rated for double jumps and spins. Cost more, but it was worth it.

    To be completely honest Edea skates are not that good. I’ve personally never had them before but If you are doing doubles/ triples, this is when they’re good. I love Jackson and Riedell because of their tried and true reliability. I like Jackson skates purely for the reason that my skates are wide and I need wide skates. Moral of the story, don’t get Edea unless if you’re really good and stick to the tried and true Jackson and Riedell boots

    I want new skates n used to have Reidell Goldstars but i have a wide front and it took forever to get them punched out. Paul Young in Washington PA did them. He was such a genius man in his craft! He has passed on.. I am looking to buy skates n i am having a hardtime finding skates! I was thinking of going with a Jackson Boot. Was looking at Edea too. Im a freestyle 5 level.. But haven't skated in awhile.. I keep having skating dreams and i want to return to the sport! Maybe teach even! (I was really good at explaining and teaching skating) Im a size 9 in regular shoes and i think an 8 in skating boots... I am in sw PA... Im looking into where to go to get back into this. Im really wanting a custom fit cause i remember just how tough they were to get right n feel good. And yes i am one of the ones who got stuck on the axel ☺... But there is still time! If you have any ideas for me please let me know! Thanks for the nice video! Blessings!😊

    Thank you for this video. Trying to get new boots now, how snug your boots should be? How does your shoe size compare to your boot size? My feet are 265mm at their longest (skating on a 275mm boot just now, I’m a fully grown adult) for what I have read it seems maybe I have a bit too much room? It feels ok with thick socks and a gel insole. Can you touch your boot with your toes or do you have a bit of room? Would 10mm of room affect my skating?

  • @Adultskater

    @Adultskater

    5 жыл бұрын

    I like my boots to be quite snug, my toes DON'T press against the end of the boot though, they can very lightly brush up against the end at best. the width and the height of your feet matter just as much as the length of your foot so please take that into consideration! it's okay to have a little bit of room in your boot for your foot, but your foot should not be able to move around when it's tied. I hope that helps!

    I'm looking for more user stories about Avanta. I know you said in the video that those particular boots were made by Klingbeil - Do you know anyone who's gotten Avanta recently? I'm still beginner level, but as an older adult, I find I have enough issues that even my semi custom Jacksons aren't cutting it (heel/footbed arch is too high). So I'm going the full custom route, and just need to choose which boot maker. Avanta seems to have a very detailed procedure for them that's especially good for pronation issues.

    It's just different. Jackson skates hug your feet in certain areas to keep you locked in, while edea just has the pressure from the foam. If you tie it properly and get the right fit, you should be able to adjust to the new feeling of an Edea boot within a couple months. Every boot has a trade off, you just have to figure out what you're willing to trade :)

  • @Adultskater

    @Adultskater

    4 жыл бұрын

    Megan Thapa it might seem like a lot for just a test skate to see if she likes it but getting a low level Jackson or riedell boot for her is your best option if you want to set her up for success. The investment will be around $100-$200 but truly it’s worth it. Having skates that aren’t suitable for figure skating hinders progress. if you get something too cheap or not supportive enough, she will get discouraged because of the pain and lack of progress both of which aren’t her fault and she’ll quit. The equipment you’re in really makes a huge difference for skating where as in other sports it may not matter so much. Sure you could get a $50 pair from modell’s because it’s less money, but in the long run those boots won’t last long. In that scenario, if you had just spent the extra $50-$80 on a pair made for figure skating, you would get quadruple the life span and the added benefit of feeling more comfortable on the ice. Hope this helps!

    I’m a new figure skater and I’m just wondering if one of my feet should hurt in my skates? I’m generally a size 6 so I bought a 5 and they fit, but they are kind of small I’m not too sure. I just bought them and still need them sharpened. But only one foot hurts when I skate and maybe that cus I put more presser on it when I skate or not but ahhh idk. They are narrow but Arnt all figure skates narrow? My toes a smidge smashed but maybe it’s because my skates are so new and I’m used to rentals at ice rinks that have their skates worn by others for years so idk? Maybe I just have to wear them for a bit to loosen them up? If not how do I make them more comfortable?

  • @Adultskater

    @Adultskater

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sierra Pinelli can you tell me which skate you purchased? your toes should not be smashed at all. You should have some room to wiggle your toes slightly. If your toes are touching the end of your boot and you feel pressure then it’s not big enough. At the most you should be able to gently brush your toes up against the front of the boot sometimes, like when you bend your knees. If your toes touch the end when you are standing straight up then probably you need a bigger size.

    @@Adultskater thank you for your reply. I bought Jackson Artis at the end. And I'm still not used to the low "teeth" in the front of the blade. It digs into ice when I go backwards. Not sure if Mark4 blade is too advanced to me.

    @@mws6267 That is totally OK! If you're feeling this, that means you're leaning too far forward when you try to go backwards. I recommend bending your knees more and trying to stay off your toes a little. You wont be 100% successful right away, but you will eventually achieve this after lots of practice. You didn't chose anything too advanced so don't worry! You can do it :)

    daydemon either Jackson freestyles or Jackson mystiques. I would recommend the mystiques but you will grow out of them when you start singles. Freestyles are good from singles all the way to starting doubles.
