What Family Dollar Closures Reveal About Dollar Stores | WSJ What Went Wrong

Along with Dollar Tree and Dollar General, Family Dollar has been one of the most well-known discount retail brands in the U.S. for decades. In June, Dollar Tree announced that it’s looking to sell or spin off Family Dollar, a brand it acquired in 2015 for roughly $9 billion.

    Retail "Shrink" by definition is loss/decrease of inventory from causes other than customer sales, not just loss of inventory due to customer theft.Theft is a type of shrink just like: employee theft, bookkeeping errors, vendor fraud, etc. You can't under staff and cut corners and expect to not see an increase in all types of shrink.

    My girlfriend used to work for them and she would come home every day with stories of people walking in and just walking out with merchandise without paying she said the store policy was not to bother them not to say anything and every single day people just walked into those family dollars And stole. that’s what they’re not saying you can’t make a profit if the items you’re buying are being stolen instead of paid for.

    Dollar Tree tried running Family Dollar like Dollar Tree. Problem is that most of these family dollar stores are in bad locations where they may have good locations when they opened but as population shifts across the country Family Dollar were left in areas with high crime and high theft. Dollar Tree was in the suburbs so there was little to no population shift and Dollar General went where other retailers wouldn’t go. No both Dollar General and Dollar Tree are both moving closer to city centers and there just isn’t a need for Family Dollar anymore.

Second of all, even if they bought it to reduce competition, once they have it, it doesn't make any sense to weaken it after because they're just weakening a part of their own business. There are cases with private equity where they sell the assets immediately after buying to make a quick buck. But that wasn't the case this time - they held on because they wanted to strengthen the store and ended up failing at it.

    The CEO of Dollar Tree says the investments into Family Dollar have not paid returns. The reporter says Family Dollar still did not invest much in store operations and quality as much as other competitors. Looks like they had did not manage their stores, inventory and product assortment to maximize sales and lower costs. If anything Dollar Tree’s acquisition gave them inroads into metro cities way back in 2015. With complimentary product assortments between the 2 brands and different markets Suburban (Tree) and urban (Family Dollar), there is no reason why this should have failed unlike Walmart express that failed in cities because of having more of the same essential products and cannibalizing sales from the bigger formats just outside metros. Looks like a classic case of mismanagement, poor quality of store, inventory and product assortment and not being able to win customers over. Even the high income customers in cities today are buying cheaper alternatives more from Walmart, DG etc. so it’s just about catering to their needs as they change.

  • @drscopeify
    @drscopeify9 күн бұрын

    Dollar stores are going to have a lot of competition soon becasue all stores in the USA that you shop in will have a low price section carrying ultra cheap stuff soon. Why? because the customer demands it. With the rise of websites like TEMU that sell direct from China the manufacturers in China are producing those goods in large quantity but with large US retailers they can offer an even better long term contract and so they will adapt to the new customer and manufacturer leading to a lot of the stuff showing up in your local grocery store and whatever stores you shop in. It might take a few months but it's coming. This could be a problem for Dollar stores but great for the customer as they will get to buy cheap goods right while doing shopping and reduce their cost of living which is always a good thing.

    Nice segment. But, if anyone has shopped at Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Dollar General, they could easily figure out which one of the three was about to close. In addition to the disorder and dingy ambiance at Family Dollar, the merchandise selection is poor and poor quality (even for discount merchandise), and the prices are not as good as Walmart. Dollar Tree, sadly, could also be dragged down by this catastrophe. Their stores have been struggling, too, in recent months. With inflation, they cannot keep their price low, while keeping their traditional selection of merchandise.

    @@ryantetreault3447 I wish I had done that too. Definitely noticed it. Definitely knew they were using the pandemic as an excuse to raise prices like every other gouging corporation and those others making record profits because of it. The second I saw that literal 25% price increase / 25% inflation, I thought okay, not cool, and knew that they were betting that because things were "just a dollar" that people would still think it's cheap at "just $1.25." And they were right. They could and are getting away with it like everyone else. I would've liked to have voted with my feet and $ too. But the Dollar Trees in our area were and still are too valuable to me and looks like others too. Their greetings cards (fortunately still many for 2 for .50), gift wrap, seasonal decor and items, office supply, crafts and snacks, some toiletries, home goods, etc, are still an amazing selection and still good price. And the selections and volume are even a little different at different stores. The seasonal items like decor, outdoor stuff, etc is really popular, a big selection heavily stocked and sells out in just a few weeks. So word is out that it's the place to go for those items. I know I use them a lot for that. All my Christmas supplies and most decor even & year round greeting cards & gift wrap supplies come from there. The oversized Xmas gift bags were so pretty last year I altered them a bit with thin long strips of craft wood for frames and used them as good looking wall art. 👍 Best place to shop for those things actually. Fortunately or unfortunately. 🤔😩😒

That warehouse that was highlighted is in the same state of chaos and infestation that my store was. Corporate knew this, and only organizes the cleanup after they were tipped off that Fox was coming to highly their position in the neighborhood (which is a food desert.) They completely ignored complaints from staffer, the community and the alderman . The store was back to its original state after a month. They do not care because they make profit regardless.

    It's all the same company and it has been I am a retail rep for many stores. It was sister companies but now consider it a merger of many sisters to one company. It makes my job easier because they each have different protocols but now since this merger/ buy out. They trying to pull wool over ur eyes. This vid is nonsense. Sure some of it is legit like the rats but, it's all the same product. Infact you can get the same exact products at each location. Only different is that you pay more. This is also a great way to instead of having 20 dollar stores in one city of 3 different sister companies now they can can merge and condense to one brand name it looks not as bad from a consumer stand point a they invade our towns

    It's distracting how you completely ignore the socio part of socioeconomic factors. Money is one of, if not the best ways to explain why something is happening, but it isn't universally effective. I know that's the whole point, but an explanation from a limited perspective is unhelpful. It seems pretty clear that Dollar Tree buying Family Dollar was a horrible decision and Dollar Tree didn't do their due diligence before acquisition. Politics were also ignored. Poverty is viewed as a moral issue in this country, and that has a lot more to do with SNAP benefits being cut than inflation. I find it hard to believe that inflation would hurt dollar stores in general. Their entire business model is that (almost) everything costs a dollar and it's focused way more on essentials than whatever "luxury" you can get for a dollar. None of these customers have that much to spend on excess to begin with or they wouldn't be shopping there. In fact, I think inflation would be more likely to increase sales and revenue as more people become unable to afford shopping at regular stores.

    I'm sorry, but the rodents and rats are not the problem. Family Dollar just sucks. Everything is always expensive. There all the time I can get something at Walmart. Cheaper family dollars is always been terrible If anything the rats make it better. Because the rats are cute, I would be fine if Family Dollar closed As well as dollar tree

    This piece was lazy. Just to be totally clear. EVERY retailer has rodent, pest and insect problems. The same is true for EVERY restaurant. If you don't think so, your brain works funny.
