What eyeglass lenses should you get for night driving

Optician Ben Fazio discusses a common concern that clients have with night driving. The two options he recommends are anti-reflective lenses or Blutech (known for the amber color) which keep out the blue light that many headlights have now. Blutech is also recommended for computer use to block out the UV light.

How about the fact that cars are now using lights that they have on the damn space station and deep sea exploration...WHY???...sure you can see everything in front of you while driving...but your going to perfectly see the car your approaching you clear as day crashing into you, because you blinded them.i mean unless you are driving in a totally pitch black forest with no moon out, there is no reason for some of these headlights.there is always ambient light out, streetlights, the moon, reflections etc.i remember you'd get pulled over for having your highbeams on...now they are all highbeams(90%)...its like there is no regulation on it.. its like everything else now adays,me,me,me...as long as i can see ,screw the next person.

WOW!! I have felt the exact same way. I am wondering how can we reverse and petition this issue across the nation? I wonder what other countries have not adopted these high bright lights? how many accidents or damage to people's vision this has caused? Why nobody is speaking up and just going with the misery and adapting to the damage this does to humans? Any suggestions how we THE PEOPLE can take action ?

Also, polarised spex will reduce issues when driving in wet, as reflections from puddles are polarised.

Opacity is not from cataracts? Never heard that before. Tell me what causes that opacity if not an aging lense, also called a cataract

Thank you for sharing! Since I was a child I haven't been able to walk confidently in the darkness, while others could. Would my problem be something that could not be fixed by antiglare or blutech. I do not need to wear glasses normally but do suffer from astigmatism. Thanks

I suffer from astigmatism too and I'm light sensitive, so going out at night is difficult but also during the day, if I get hit by headlights at night or sun reflections at day, I basically can't see for 8 sometimes to 15 seconds, I use a special kind of blue light blocking and polarized glasses, don't know if those are sold normally as the ones I have were custom made to help in my condition, I still need to see a doctor to take care of the astigmatism but these glasses help a lot.

This is misleading. I'm an optician as well and any optician should know that any tint in a lens will add to light transmission i.e. allow less light into the lens. That is not recommended when you're looking for the most am out of light to reach your eyes in twilight and night time driving situations. Anti-Glare lenses or Polarized lenses don't work the same on headlights as they do from the suns rays. Polarized lenses will NOT reduce light or glare from oncoming headlights, traffic lights, etc. Anti-Reflective will help with starbursts caused by headlights etc. but to an extent. The best recommendations for night driving are simple. Make sure your Glasses prescription is up to date and if you have eye problems like dry eye, glaucoma, etc this will affect night time driving a lot.. Clean you windshield both inside and out. Don't stare at oncoming traffic lights, divert your eyes to a spot away from direct light. Don't outrun your headlights, as in don't drive so fast that it makes things harder to see at night. Don't follow your headlights, try focusing on a spot in front of your headlights.

100% of the reason is the new headlights that need to be outlawed because they are too bright and they for the most part don’t help the drivers see any better in the vehicle that they are driving.
