What Drives True Social Work? | Dr. Bharat Vatwani | TEDxGateway

Discover the Unsung Heroes of Humanity with Dr. Bharat Vatwani as he explores how emotions and compassion truly transform social work. Through his own heart-wrenching stories from the streets and remarkable transformations in his rehabilitation centers, Dr. Vatwani unveils the profound impact that empathy can play in our society.
Witness firsthand how reconnecting India's wandering mentally ill with their loved ones isn't just an act of kindness-it's a powerful testament to human resilience and connection. Every story shared in this talk not only challenges our perceptions but also illuminates the potential for compassion to ignite monumental changes in society. Dr. Bharat Vatwani is a Mumbai-based psychiatrist and
co-founder of the Shraddha Rehabilitation Foundation. He,
along with his wife Dr. Smitha, established the NGO in 1988
with the aim of rescuing, treating, rehabilitating, and reuniting mentally-ill destitutes with their families in India. Over the
past 35 years, Shraddha has successfully reunited more
than 10,000 destitutes with their families across different
states in India. The organization provides free food, care,
shelter, and psychiatric treatment to these individuals until
they are able to return to their native homes. Dr. Vatwani
was honored with the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award
in 2018 for his exceptional dedication and outstanding work
in this field This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
