What does the future hold for menopause and HRT? With Kate Muir | The Dr Louise Newson Podcast

Making a welcome return to the podcast this week is menopause activist, author and documentary maker Kate Muir.
Kate is the author of Everything You Need to Know About the Menopause (but were too afraid to ask) and the producer behind Davina McCall’s two award-winning menopause documentaries; her third documentary, investigating the contraceptive pill, is currently in production.
This week, after more than 200 episodes of the Dr Louise Newson podcast, Kate is the one asking the questions. She asks Dr Louise about her hopes for HRT and menopause care over the next decade, and about the importance of hormones for healthy ageing and prevention of future disease.
They also talk about barriers to accessing HRT, the so-called natural approach to the menopause and tackle claims the menopause is being over-medicalised.

Appreciate the highlighting of testosterone as part of a triad of HRT as well as how women doctors “of a certain age” are more likely to understand the value of HRT for quality of life and disease prevention as those who experience first hand how important they are. I specifically sought out an older female doctor and it has made all the difference. This was after having more than one younger female doctor be utterly unhelpful in my menopause journey.

Taking into account my personal peri/menopause journey I think if much more training for NHS GPs was done, i think id be in a better place by now. 18 months since starting HRT and still not well, sadly my GP is less than confident, and another didn’t know how to check for estrogen absorption had to refer to local hospital for advice. I am progesterone intolerant and feeling very fed up about my treatment. Can’t afford to go private, if I could I most certainly would 100%. My mother had dementia, how frightening to realise I may not get testosterone. Thank you Dr Newson for fighting for us.

Thank you so much for your hard work. I must say, I had a positive experience with HRT and the NHS. Unfortunately that was not the case with a life threatening condition that my husband developed. Just getting referred took two weeks each time.... Out of desperation we went private but they could not do the sofisticated tests that were needed.... Back in NHS.... The frustration and sheer amount of not caring was defestating. They want to check the boxes, not sort a strange problem

Louise and Kate, fantastic 💛Knowledgeable, pioneering women supporting women, keep it going. I live in a deprived part of Glasgow, no one wants to know about HRT, not other women I know*, and not doctors in general. My GP is lovely and cooperative with my HRT needs to a point, but is there any interest in the future me's health? NHS seems to be fixated on lowest dose for shortest time and that's no good for menopause care, if you can get it at all. Doctors are intelligent people by definition, so why aren't they thinking ? WHY aren't they bothered the way Louise is, Kate is, or I am? 😊xx *Editing to add, I forgot to mention that Menopause Warriors is a volunteer group of women in Glasgow, who DO support other women, so if you're in the Glasgow area or on Facebook, they are very welcoming 💛xx
