In this video, I delve into what the Direct Monitor dial does on the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. I demonstrate how Direct Monitoring works on the Focusrite 2i2, but the details also apply to the Focusrite Solo. In the video I also explain the three different modes that are available via the Direct Monitor button and which mode you should use in different recording situations.

When I am sing and record it with direct monitoring sound is very strange , how is correct to record myself during singing with direct or without?
Do I need to turn ON direct monitoring on Stereo, if I wanna listen panning effect properly?
Great explanation, thanks ! Question : does the Scarlett has to be always to be plugged into a computer ? Could i just use the monitor mode with my headphones when rehearsing with guitar (electric) and singing ?

The 2i2 gets power through the USB cable connected to the computer. So, if it's not connected, the interface won't operate.
So record vocals in mono and turn OFF direct monitor when wanting to hear the song via the speakers????
Great video! Is it also possible to monitor computer audio, if I'm using Scarlett as external computer audio interface?

Yes you can monitor your computer audio at the same time as hearing yourself with Direct Monitoring. So if you have audio recorded in your DAW and you are adding a vocal to a new track, you will hear what's playing back from the DAW and yourself in headphones.
So if I'm just listening to music and not recording anything, I'll keep it off
Hello. Thanks so much for the information. I have the same one too. But I couldn't be sure of something. When recording an acoustic guitar with a condenser microphone, should we set the button of the channel to which we connect the microphone to "line" or "inst"?
@DIYVideoStudio

If you are recording using a condenser microphone you don't need to worry about the INST button. The Scarlett is configured so that when you plug in an XLR connector (your mic cable), the preamp is automatically configured for a microphone, so no further action is required. You only need to use the INST button if you use the jack part of the combo input. Basically, the INST button switches the input between Instrument and Line level. Leave the INST button off (LED unlit) if you connect a line-level input with a TRS (3-pole) jack (eg keyboard or synth). But set the INST button (LED lights up red) when connecting an instrument with a guitar (2-pole or TS) jack.

@@DIYVideoStudio Sorry. Which is correct when recording acoustic guitar with a condenser microphone? Line? Or inst? My Scarlett 2i2 is the first generation. İt has ("line" - "inst" ) swich. I had to make a check. So I asked again. So Sorry.

@@cengizender7217 If you are using a condenser microphone to record an acoustic guitar, you will be plugging the mic into one of the XLR sockets on the 2i2 and not one of the jack sockets. Since the LINE/INST switch toggles between Instrument and Line level only on the jack input, you can ignore it. The position of the switch does not affect the XLR input. If you were using a dynamic mic you could plug that into the jack input, but the XLR input would be a better choice since Mic level is lower than either Instrument or Line level.
What if I’m triggering drum samples/VST’s like Superior Drummer 3; can I use and benefit from the Direct Monitor to further reduce latency when listening from headphones?

I've not tried the situation you've suggested so can't give you a definitive answer. However, if your headphones are plugged into the 2i2 I don't see why you can't use Direct Monitoring.
I have and active speaker (JBL irx108bt) and i need to use 2 condensers but i dont have +48v in the speaker. Would yo recomend me using mi scarlett 2i2 to give phantom power to the condensers using de direct monitor to send the audio via de headphones output? Theres a better way to do this? Sorry about my english

I've now had the opportunity to try this. I connected the headphone output from the 2i2 to the input of my JBL speakers and it worked. However, you'll need to be careful about feedback.
I think I'm dumb as hell, what if your streaming amd not recording would it be turned off
Thank you sir

Hi i have a nasty problem with my focusrite 2i4, with the recorded sound and adding a guitar with a percussion reggae affect " as you can imagine it has to line up perfectly" but is always late. Iv tried adjusting everything even the millisecond thing in the options " nothing will get my multi track to line up i use mixpad. If i alter the buffer size ut gets worse, but i cant get it to sync. Maybe I'm listening to the wrong output ??? . I have zero latency in ny headphones while playing its perfectly in sync while adding the track. But in playback its always late. Arrrggghhh. Please help before i jump out the window 🪟 lol. Cheers. Iv asked fifty people in u tube for help. Not a single anser. Its all about latency in gap at headphones, from playing or talking, never about the problem i have. Thank you. Here's hoping " 😮
Does it affect the sound of the finalized recording in any way?

No, it doesn't affect the sound. Thanks for asking.
I don't want any monitoring. With the vocaster they shove it down your throat and now my friend needs to return it. Hopefully with the solo you can just disable it completely. Its not needed
