I am a Catholic Deacon. I was attacked and shot 5 times.02020 I defended myself and in the process killed the attacker. My faith and the sacraments got me through the ordeal. One of the reasons I converted was because the Catholic laid it out in the Catechism that self defence is/may be a necessary act AND in some cases not to defend oneself or community is a grave sin.

I love that he trips over his own words and questions himself in the middle of a thought and then, confirms the direction, out loud in which he is headed. It’s amusing and humble and so very human. I constantly find myself wanting to double check myself and I appreciate it when others do the same. It makes it easier to trust what he is saying.

Funny thing is "Turn the other cheek" was actually a way to retaliate against someone. When Jews slapped they did it with their backhand but when you turn it the other way they can't slap you. Same for the extra mile. Back then if you were forced by romans to do a job you can't be forced to hike past a set amount without the soldier being punished.

Some thoughts as someone who conceals my full sized handgun with a pro-life shirt almost daily. Meekness is an act of strength. Meaning, we grow in meekness by having the ability to exercise violence and choosing not to. If you are going to conceal carry or exercise self defense in any other way, you have to continually train and refine your skill sets. Fear associated with poor training is what leads people to go to violence first. Having the peace of mind to know when and how to use the tools at your disposal gives you ample time to deescalate or to remove yourself from the situation. Finally, if you are going to commit to being prepared to defend yourself, you also need to get medical training to the degree that you are able to triage anything your skills allow you to inflict. Frankly, I've used more of my medical training on car accidents than I've ever had to use my firearms training. I'll link some good training and knowledge videos and websites for those of you who want to be responsible when it comes to self defense.

(Catholic) self defense instructor here. That was a good cursory overview. I think it's always worth mentioning that Christ himself had excellent advice on the subject regarding SD, lethality and proportionality. E.g. if someone smacks you, you can turn the other cheek. If your life is in danger, aquire lethal state of the art "assault" weaponry. Sell your jacket to do so, if required. "Swords" are lethal weapons. Thus killing is implied as incidentally justifiable by our Lord himself. Pacifism is an immoral and terminal condition, my friends.

We don’t do it because we like confrontation, but because we have sworn an oath to protect Christians and Christendom as well as those that may not be Christian but are still innocent and defenseless. At the same time we are called Christian Hardliners for our conviction of faith. Just thought I would throw that in there as we deal with the self defense question quite a bit. Thanks Fr Pine. I'm a (Protestant) born-again believer currently working as a nurse aide, and a much younger (23? yr old) coworker has, in my opinion, been very rude to me (ex: shut a door in my face) and taken advantage of my kindness. (I was foolish to loan her money; I had thought she was more mature.) I think I would accept a 50% re-payment and even accept payment to my church in place of payment to myself. But it's very hard to communicate with her so I have yet to make her that deal. I guess I'm more concerned that she grow up and receive Jesus than whether I get repaid. I ask people to pray for her salvation but I suspect I'm not done dealing with her rudeness. Can viewers simply pray that Diamond gets saved please? I would also like her to hear my feedback about her misconduct.

Also of interesting note: if someone intends to kill you (their will being manifested in words or actions) and one determines this, it is not wrong to will to kill them if they’re trying to kill you. 6:18 _"because we have means to imprison someone for a long time"_ There were oubliettes in some places when St. Thomas penned his words ... The longer you imprison some (like the closer the verdict comes to earlier ones on death penalty) the more frustration is that person going to feel for longer and longer time. Note, the frustrations in death row are more due to prolongations after prolongations than to death penalty itself as such. And the more people who are treated that way, the more people you need who are "capable of dealing with them" - one desideratum being at least apparent humanity, but one being also prudence about a dangerous person. Is society best served by getting more and more of those who have seen too much evil in fellow men of less fortune than themselves?

I can't answer for Fr. Pine, but I've always thought of the "turn the other cheek" admonition as we should not seek revenge. Also, Christ calls us not to bear a grudge or hold on to bitterness when someone does us wrong (easier said than done and usually impossible without God's grace!). However, that is different from defending ourselves (or our loved ones) from a violent attack. Sometimes there is a duty to defend (if necessary, with deadly force). For example, a police officer would be expected to try and stop a dangerous criminal from hurting the innocent. As a husband and father, I also feel a duty to protect my family (from both spiritual and earthly dangers). Revenge should never be our motive, but sometimes violence (even deadly force) may be necessary to defend the innocent.

Catholic men have a duty to defend the helpless and the innocent . If you see someone attacking a helpless person and you do nothing, that is a sin. God doesn’t like cowards, and you will have to answer for your lack of courage when you stand before Christ. You should always defend yourself. Those who prey on people will do so more if they are not met with resistance. If you are a pacifist you are helping evil to spread. Be like an honorable knight and do not fear man, if you fear another human you are giving them too much respect. Only fear God.

Just war theory does justify fighting any defensive war, if attacked, there really can possibly be no limits on what you're obliged to do- if attacked, and in an unwinnable war, due to differences in firepower, you *must* completely eradicate the power that has attacked your people, there are no possible limits on waging a war if your people are attacked... same as if the state attacks any innocent, then the state must be completely eradicated, to make an example to other states of "do this and you *will* inevitably die off at the hands of the one you've attacked- do this and you are going to lose, no matter what, and your whole society will die off long before the one you've attacked dies, no matter what.", as that's needed for self-defense: to eradicate the entire faction that has attacked you, no matter the ability.

A slap won't kill you. An insult won't kill you. If someone points a gun at you or someone else, it's only logical to conclude that they are ready to kill and using deadly force would be justified. If you don't want to defend yourself, that's fine, don't do it. But don't think you'll be some sort of martyr because you refused to defend yourself from some George Floyd type criminal. If you're explicitly being executed for your belief in Jesus Christ THAT makes you a martyr.

This is why as a Catholic I can say, "Stay strapped." There have been people who were shooting people who were stopped because there was a churchgoer or neighbor with a concealed carry pistol or AR 15 or other firearm who stepped in and did what was necessary to defend the innocent. It was regrettable, but it would have been worse for the killing to continue. Couple great examples are of the shooting in texas where an ex-cop pulled out his pistol and shot the guy, and another where a neighbor loaded up his AR and ran across the street (after telling his daughter to call the cops) because he knew the cops wouldn't get there in time, and he was there, armed, and capable.

Pretty sure the Church's teaching on capital punishment goes beyond protecting society from harm or even to a corrective behaviour, but more so to satisfy the temporal punishment for grave offenses. A serial killer, when caught for countless murders can easily be locked in a cell for life. That doesn't serve the temporal punishment for the multitude of murders committed.

In the Philippines, our Criminal Law states that there are certain elements to invoke Self-defense. 1. That there is Unlawfull Agression against the person defending himself. 2. Reasonable necessity of the means employed to prevent or repel it. For example, you had defend yourself from someone who intended to hit you with a piece of pie. However, you defended yourself with a sub-machine gun. Now that's unreasonable necessity. 3. Lack of sufficient provocation on the part of the person defending himself. For example, you approached a person whom you claim to harassing your wife with a knife, and threatened him not to come near your spouse. Now that's provocation. A lack of it, is you even tried to evade the person and yet he attacked you. Hence, these are the three (3) elements needed to invoke self defense in the Revised Penal Code.

I find it difficult to augment my faith or really any of my priorities with yet another fight. I have been in more fights than the average person. From a young age. I find it virtueless. And the opposite of glorious. Violence should be a necessity for self defense. And frankly, the best self defense is fighting down right dirty, and winning at all costs. Which means that if I get into another fight, I'm choking someone until they're unconscious or dead and then kicking them square in the face with my steel toes work shoe. Or just flat out gunning them down. And moving forward with my day.

But Fr. Pine, the Church's perennial teaching on the death penalty isn't just based on self defense. It's also been traditionally punitive (some crimes simply merit death as punishment/expiation because of how bad they are) & also to act as a warning/example to others. While the Church's recent teaching emphasizes self-defense of the community & prefers to do away with the death penalty, it's not without controversy given some of the Church's perennial teaching. Perhaps you could further comment?

Pine isn’t meaning we have to fight back when attacked, but that we are allowed to. Otherwise the body of Christ could cease to exist, and the remainder of the planet would be in dire straits. In a smaller lens, with an armed intruder is in the home I have the right to defend my life-I could submit to the violence that would not end well for the rest of my family.

Non agression principle os not Christian, as stated by st Augustine with the just War theology, violence, even agression is sometime not only a right but a duty. The only time our Lord used violence was an agression. The problem of our days is not an excess of violence put pusillanimity. Refusal to be brave enough to carry out violence and agression is the only reason Christian are not persecuted anymore, especially when the devil has full control over society.

If ever you get punched and get angry or your opponent does something unsportsmanlike and you get angry, and you get this urge to « get back » at him or get angry and want to « punch his head back in angry retaliation », you are sinning. If you have the self control for this to never ever happen, then maybe. However, if you go into martial arts and fight and this happens, well then you are sinning through unrighteousness anger

I don't think you can plausibly argue that self-defence is not prohibited by the doctrine of double effect (DDE). The reason is that any account of DDE needs to be combined with a response to the 'closeness problem'. The closeness problem is to explain why DDE prohibits cases of harming in which one does not strictly intend harm. For example, suppose I push an innocent bystander onto a grenade to use his body as a shield to save 5 people but he will be blown to bits. This is a paradigm example of an act prohibited by DDE. Yet strictly speaking, I only intend that his body is sheild the five from the explosion, but I do not intend that he be harmed in anyway. If he survived the explosion I would be happy. There is no account of DDE that prohibits pushing a person onto the grenade but does not also prohibit killing a person in self-defence. If you intentionally kill in the former case, you also intentionally kill in self-defence cases.

"You certainly deceive yourself and are greatly mistaken if you think that there is one set of requirements for the person in the world and another for the monastic. The difference between them is that one is married and the other is not; in all other respects they will have to render the same account, for all people are called to reach the same point: [the full measure of Christ; to become perfect as the Father in heaven is perfect]. And this is what throws everything into disorder: the idea that only the monk is required to show greater perfection while the rest are allowed to live in laxity. But this is not true!" St. John Chrysostom If it's "more fitting that a priest die than a priest kill. Way more fitting" (12.10 mins in) then it's the same for all of us. Maybe self defence is forgivable, but it is more fitting that we die than kill, because we are all priests, "all people are called to reach the same point."

Whilst my views have changed and believe self-defense is morally licit I believe we as christians should follow the higher way and that is to rather be harmed then harm someone else for that is what christ did its not easy but that is the radical love of Christ and that being said I don't think christians even need violence as we have God and the angels as our defense.

The commands in the sermon on the mount involved a sort of Oriental hyperbole that we are not used to in the West. For example, do you really believe that if someone steals one thing belonging to you that you are morally obliged to run after him and give him something else? If not, are you not picking and choosing? If you took the statement about turning the other cheek literally, it would only apply to a slap in the face. If you start applying it to other self-defense scenarios, then you are interpreting it. So, why do you think that your interpretation is better than St. Thomas Aquinas's?

The Bible tells us we must protect life. If you don't protect your life or the lives of others it means you don't value them and their blood will be on your hands if you do nothing. Loving enemies DOES NOT MEAN to let yourself or others get killed. Doing good to those that HURT you, not MURDER you or others. You're wrong. Sorry you don't seem to get it. You won't be considered a martyr because you refuse to defend yourself or others against some drug dealing criminal like George Floyd.
