What Does Suppressor Length Change Beyond Sound?

Ойын-сауық

We take a look at the differential between a long and a short suppressor on velocities and point of impact shift. For testing we use a Dead Air Sandman K and Sandman L.

How much quieter is the longer over the shorter? I just got a YHM R9 and am a little disappointed with the results on 223. I have yet to try it on my 350 legend and im sure it'll do better as it was designed for 36 calibers but im feeling as if I should have spent the extra and gotten the Odin Works Enduro i was considering.

When it comes to suppression volume is king to reducing sound. 556 /223 is difficult to really suppress being supersonic your guaranteed 120 is db crack generated continuously by the bullet breaking the sound barrier. To get better sound uses a round that doesn’t break the sound barrier and has a lower powder charge combined with a longer barrel you will increase the ratio of suppressor volume to gas volume reducing the overall sound

Hello there, I have a fairly niche question that I can't seem to find a straight answer for. Would using a 5" suppressor with subsonic 300 black out ammo out of a 9" barrel be hearing safe? Specifically, I have the Sig Spear Lt 9"/300blk and wanted to get the new SLH/SLX suppressor in the compact (5") variant. There's very little tools or sources I can find to help me answer this question. Any insight or recommendations for research would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Lucky for you I have a very similar similar setup an 8” barrel with a 5.4” suppressor dead air sandman k it may be technically hearing safe I wouldn’t suggest shooting it without ears even if you are shooting subsonic ammo. If you have a 9” can on the end like a sandman L I would consider that hearing safe with subsonic ammo. But I have sensitive ears and consider safe 120db and below not the 140db most people call hearing safe

I would also preface even with a 24” bolt action I would not consider it hearing safe with a 5” can it’s close but a tad bit over in my experience

How does the unsuppressed 6.5 velocity compare to the L and K?

It was not tested at the same time or with the same lot of ammo so not directly comparable but 2623fps so right in the noise ballpark still

Well with a pencil profile I would expect it always to be. We do have a previous video showing the whip of one of these when firing

in terms of sound attenuation the longer the better?

It is a combination of volume and baffle design that lower the sound signature. Volume is the largest factor baffle design allows for more efficient usage of the volume inside the suppressor. In this comparison we had 2 suppressors from the same manufacturer in the same line so the design would be extremely similar. The longer one just has more internal volume and baffles to reduce the sound signature. Suppressors work to contain the gas generated by the burning powder so the more area it has to contain that volume the more it reduces the sound level is the rough rule of thumb. This is why 300 blackout is a better round for running quiet than 5.56 it generates less gas when fired so the same suppressor won’t seem as loud when fired. TLDR: you can get quieter by adding volume to a suppressor either by making it longer or by making it larger diameter.
