What Does Lotus Elise Specialist and Racer Think of My FrankEnlise? + chassis set up!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
My Lotus Elise S1 is having a geometry and suspension chassis set up by racer and Elise expert Steve Guglielmi. Steve is also going to drive it and let me know how this cheap Elise, which has had extensive chassis damage fixed, actually drives compared to a 'good' car.

The look on your face when Steve was driving the car initially, priceless.

Please, please, please don't let it explode
The casual attitude of Steve when wringing the cars neck on the test drive - just another day at the office. I'd be like Jack - eyes wide and gripping the seat.
Steve is a relative, the days of going and seeing him lead the pack backstage during the TVR tuscan cup days are memories I'll always hold close and have never really left me. My ex brother in law (engineer) took his TVR Chimaera to steve and said - you cannot beat his knowledge and expertise also super down to earth! I'm on the prowl for an elise or similar and know where I'll be taking it ;)
"Please don't let him come here" 😆 Great to get a good report on the car from a respected member of the Elise community

Can’t beat an old school mechanic, who knows their stuff and that you can trust.👌
I am really enjoying this series on the Elise. It is a car I would like to add to my collection. Seeing the trials and tribulations you are experiencing helps me understand what to expect, thank you!
He used the term "Dampers". What a shocker. Good for him!
The slightly concerned glance at the speed when he was hammering it, was hilarious:))
Franky I need some love..........Jack ok.......oh happy days............looking forward to seeing Franky on track.
Really happy for you. It’s great when there is a noticeable improvement with a car. Thanks for bringing us along for the journey!!
Nice video. Good to see improvements to the car.
You look so stoked to be driving the Elise as it was designed to be driven. Well done!
Awesome stuff Jack, looking forward to a fair weather test drive, that'll be fun!
Great video as usual Jack, what with you, Edd, Harry M and Iain T you all keep me very well entertained, keep up the enthusiastic and excellent videos!
Jack number 27 is just getting better and better bud! Have a great Easter weekend buddy 👍
Its great to hear stories from people like Steve who have been in the game a very long time and are experts in their field. Love the fact that they still use original metal alignment tools. Just goes to prove that not all new is best... 👍
Great video Jack, I remember the first video in the snow, now it’s almost perfect, can’t wait for the next video 👍👍.
Brilliant to watch the progress of your Lotus and its positive outcome. I like the vest on your passenger seat 😂. Thanks again for sharing your channel, you deserve a lot more followers Jack. Best wishes, Bob M.
SteveG knows how to pedal. He drove my 330bhp Exige (me in passenger seat) around a race-prepped Escort Cosworth around McLeans at Donington.. no mean feat in itself, except we were on the grass at the time after being forced off the track by the Cosworth.
So pleased for you Jack, the car has been a roller coaster of ups and downs, but you can see by your face how much you are enjoying the experience now! Great to hear Steve talk too, what a truly brilliant experience it must have been to have his wealth of experience benefit Frankie!
Absolutely brilliant as always 👍👍
Jack your enthusiasm is infectious 😂👍👍👍
Great to see the car doing what it was built for. Your patience has really paid off.
All fixed and officially handling as she should. Wow, what an early (Elise) history lesson. Great video and a sneak peek of the geometric measurements that keep your guys ahead on race day!! Your car has been favourably been found to be a "good" car. Great car man and a great video with loads of great info. Thumbs up my friend!!
Great video Jack ...what an expert this guy was 👍

Servicing my younger son's Rover with the K-Series, I drove it for a few miles minus the Air Filter. Used the K-Series freely when fully warmed up. What a magnificent induction sound! My own MGF and my older son's Elise S2 also impressive sound immediately behind the driver as in Jack's Video but, that saloon's induction sound was a surprising delight to my ears.
Your face was a picture when he floored it ,you watching the Rev counter just in case it popped 🤔 It sounded great nice one Jack 👍👨🏻🏭
Jack - so happy for you. get the windshield wipers working and she'll be sorted mate.
amazing Jack, well done - get the tyres sorted, and maybe head for a track day??
Great update, just proves how set-up is crucial. Looking forward to the gearshift tweaks, after a test drive many years ago I remember how the MGF shift wasn't that great.

Good result. That only comes to prove that your DIY repair was spot on, just to shut up some bad comments haha. Have a Happy Easter
That's great news Jack, chassis repair not noticed by a specialist is a real credit to your work. Better yet she is now set up and driving beautifully, exactly as a Lotus should. Really like the short shifter upgrade, wondering which one you are going to use? Short shift gear leverage transforms almost any car into a race type feel and makes the drive even more enjoyable. Did that to my BMW E46, best upgrade I've ever done. Got me thinking about one for my E Type!
Would love to get some Quick Jacks but $4K here in NZ so jack stands are it for now with my 986. Love the look of the Elise!

Looks like he was taking it out to the red line, I kept expecting him to change up and he just kept on it. Great that it's turning out to be a good fun car Jack.
Congratulations on eventually getting a MOT (for a car that has been driven for a long time on the roads without one)
Your face when looking at him driving was comedy gold
Did he say the rear tires need to be changed? Maybe some good sticky rubber all around would also made the handling more fun. Happy to see you happy and the Lotus fulfilling what you wanted it to be. Excellent video!
Go have the geometry measured so you have it for future reference.
Jack - your face when Steve was red lining it ..... :)
Somebody looks a very happy Chappie now it's setup 👍😆😆😆
Wow, that was a bit great, Steve is the man.
Nice one again Boss..
Having to live my S1 vicariously through you at the moment having sent the STACK off for refurbishment due to the needles not working. Of course it's taking ages and the sun's come out... :-(
I would suggest that some day you install the 2.5 turn lock to lock steering rack from Titan. The faster rack gives the car a bit more turn-in eagerness and less wheel turning motion, obviously. The change in weight isn't perceptible but it just adds a bit more life to the already very lively experience. They make an even faster rack that I would imagine is even more so but I haven't tried it.
Steve sounds like Ron Dennis apart from the fact that Steve actually makes sense when he talks.
Steve knows his stuff and he can drive as well, wiped the floor with everyone in the LCUK Sprint Series when he competed.

If I could only own an Elise once in my life...a well set up of course. Oh, could be an Exige too...
If possible, more insights in the Elise from Steve, please! I sent you a msg on Instagram about it too, but valvetrain noise could also be caused by aging hydraulic lifters.

I know it's been 1y..., and after reviewing the video a couple times, i am left wondering - if you still see this comment - what kind of setup did you ask Steve to apply? "Fast road/occasional track day"?
That test drive was cosy. Whenever I have someone in my VX220 I have to apologise in advance for contact when changing gear.
Yeah, too bad Steve won't share his set-up secrets, especially for those of us over here in Canada :(
Do the oil change and get new tires all around like Steve said to do....and perhaps change the fluid in the tranny if not new.... Enjoy!
Lovely Jubbly, by the the smile on your face they did a good job. Why don't you respray it yourself Jim like you did the Mercedes-Benz, when you've finished all the mechanicals that is.

How does this car compare to the Esprit you had for a bit and soldl?
@Number27

I Loved the Esprit but that was a GT car really… as a drivers car nothing can touch this!
I know the floor well is tight on one of these, but you have to stop riding the clutch, this may be why the old one failed.
fifth down to third on what looked like a straight road seems a bit weird ?

Gears a bit vague.. I think I just wanted to get into 4th but it wouldn’t go in..
did Steve know you had 10 year old tyres on when taking it for a test drive?! Ah, yes he did!
I suppose the clutch did you a favour by failing BEFORE you had done the set up. It would have been a shame to have to dismantle the rear suspension, cuz they never go back exactly the way they were.

I had the same thought. I would have imagined someone would have shared the info on the forums. Just take Frankie to a computerized alignment rack, and get a print of the results! I suspect the key is in what the specialist said about aligning relative to the centreline of the chassis, rather than just wheel to wheel.

@@bobmcl2406 Just did a search in the Lotus forums about the Guglielmi setup but didn't find the settings. I think it's too much hassle to ship an Elise to the UK just for a wheel alignment.
