What does it take to total a car? Explained

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video applies to accident damage and the insurance company as well as extended and lifetime warranty. It goes over what it takes for a vehicle to be considered a total loss.
There is one exception that I forgot in the video. Flood damage is always a total loss situation. There are way to many issues that come from a vehicle that's been underwater. Especially a newer one.

I know you should just fix the car yourself no matter how damaged it is

@mac's garage so the collision shop told you that your car was beyond repair? I'm asking because I want my 2017 Nissan altima to just be totaled out and the insurance adjuster said it was 3500$ worth of damage but the collision shop still has to do a breakdown to see if it's any hidden damage

Beyond repair and totaled aren't necessarily the same. Mine was very repairable and in fact I kept the car and repaired it myself. The shop will do its full estimate and compare the cost of repair to the value of the car. Car values have skyrocketed since I made this video which makes it more difficult to total a vehicle today.

So i did an estimate my car value is 55k-61k.. damage is pretty bad 2 axels broke and rear quarter panel is damaged. As long as the damages cost isn’t over 40k will i be fine? Just kinda worried because i did just get the car about 7 months ago.

A totaled car can always be fixed, people are just lazy. Insurance just doesn't want to fix your car, you can always fix it yourself.

I'm sure you have already made your decision by now but it all depends on if you want to fix it or not.

So if I replace my Prius battery they'll total it? Even if I pay for it myself? She runs just fine, but maybe in 3 years or so her battery will die. Even if the battery dies, she'll still run just not be fuel efficient. She's the best car I ever bought. I don't want to part with her.

I guess I didn't really explain this part. Totaling happens when someone else is paying the bill on your vehicle. Ex: insurance company, or warranty repairs(generally applies to extended warranties as the car gets older) You are free to pay whatever you want to repair your vehicle on your own. Though if you are paying $6k to repair a vehicle that will be worth $3k once fixed it doesn't make financial sense. It is your choice and if the vehicle is special to you for some reason or another you might decide to do it.

Most flood vehicles are considered totalled automatically. You can deal with your insurance adjuster directly. Water hight will sometimes have an impact. How deep was the water?

You are incorrect on repairs years ago I got a new engine on a car for 6000 eventhough the car at the time was worth significantly less

Depends on the company making the call and timing. I have friends that giving payout rather than repairing mechanical issues is part of their job description. The collision repair is currently seeing some vehicles that would have been totaled in normal times be repaired do to inflated values and scarcity of replacement vehicles at this time.
