What does F1 designer Gordon Murray think of our 2.0-litre V10 engine?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Mike got invited recently to check out the new GMA T.33, with the legendary Gordon Murray giving him a full walkaround of his latest V12 creation. With the Cosworth engine revving to 11,100rpm, Mike decided to show Gordon the 2.0-litre, high-revving V10 that is soon to go into his MkII MX-5, to see what the F1 designer thought the special little engine.

I did a Lamborghini Factory tour in Italy a couple of weeks ago and it was heart-breaking to hear that Lamborghini's mighty NA V12 will also be ending with the Aventador production run. A gimmick in what sense? After all, it's inspired by what Murray learned from the Brabham BT46B "fan car" F1 race car that he designed, which won the only race it entered, the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix, and was subsequently withdrawn over concerns that it would pose an unfair advantage. The fan on the GMA T50 doesn't work in exactly the same way, but there's a uniqueness, an interesting history *and* a function to it.

  • @chesspiece81

    @@MikeKayK It is no doubt functional and obviously serves a purpoes but instead of taking it and putting it in such a prominent place it could have been placed somewhere equally as effective while not looking like it's just a fan stuck on the back ruining the lines of the car. The lines of the F1 are timeless but many years from now I don't think it will no age well.

    @@chesspiece81 This fan must be at the rear to perform its multi-function role of using the air coming off the back of the car to increase downforce while decreasing drag, and must be large because the T50 has no splitters or active wings. The function dictated this and so Gordon chose to accentuate the fan as a stylistic element that this car would be known for, rather than hide it. The BT46B also had it in the rear, obviously.

  • @chesspiece81

    @chesspiece81

    @@MikeKayK At the back yes but couldn't it perform the same function mounted under the bodywork or hidden directing the air through the bodywork? Isn't that what it is designed to do now? Instead of one fan mounted so visibly on the back of the car why not have fans hidden inside the bodywork to help pull the air and direct it? One smaller fan on either side of the body instead of one large fan in the middle mounted behind the grille the external fan is mounted on to pull air from the left or right side. That is why I say it is kind of like a gimmick
