Hey fellow Bass Playas and Face Makas! In this lesson I’ll be talking about the term diatonic along with an shirt example exercise. When learning these musical terms don’t let them fool you by how “fancy” they are. Mostly likely that have a very simple meaning. 5 whole tones and 2 semitones and every mode would therefore be diatonic

Like this Daric....Diatonic = 7 NOTE scales. It dosnt matter. As a bass player you'll still need to be able to follow or actaully mimic some of the lead lines...various turn around. cadence different chord changes and keys shifting. Playing the bass is actaully almost like playing the lead guitar sometimes...it's just in the lower octive. Somtimes I'll just strike a chord or do a sort purcussive chakka..chakka chakka.. so my bass player can play lead , different scale ...basically do the FILLS. It gives the band more BALANCE Anyways.... There's 9 ea diatonic PARALLEL(7 notes) scales ( keys are just PITCH) The MAJOR is just the REFERENCE interval 1.........2..........3..4.........5.........6...........7..8 b2.......b3...........b5........b6........b7 SHIFT ONE NOTE at a time to obtain the intervals to the other scales. Within each scales are 7 modes Ea. b3 = Harmonic MAJOR b6 = Melodic min b3, b6 = Harmonic Min b2, b3 = melodic min b2 b2, b3, b6 = Harmonic min b2 b3, b5 = melodic min b5 b3, b5, b6 = Harmonic min b5 ( III of Hungarian MAJOR) b3, #4 = melodic min #4 ( lydian b3 = IV of Harmonic MAJOR) b3, #4, b6 = double harmonic min b3, b6, b7 = NATURAL Minor b3, b6, b7 are also the SECOND ARPEGGIO of the I, IV, V chords.. example...C Harmonic MAJOR (b6 = second arpeggio of the IV chord) C Maj.....F min G Maj (or G7) i need you to play that F chord/triad as....min or C melodic min C min.....F Maj G Maj.....A dim....B dim C min....Dmin.....Eb maj/aug F7 G7 A dim B dim I need you to play the C as a min sometimes when I modulate,,ect or like this...reverse the process and push UP from min to MAJOR example from A min... A min.......D min.....E min NATRUAL A min D min E7 harmonic min A min D 7 E 7 melodic min A min B7 E maj7 Melodic min #4 Depending on the style of music.... such as blues..... I, IV , V movement are ALL DOMINANT CHORDS These are the dominants ish modes you can use to modulate over each chord/tone center. mix mix b2 mix b6 mix b2, b6 mix #4 Mix #2, #4 mix b2, #4 loc b4 phry b4 The b4 or #2.....will basically have b3 and Maj3 example.... 1...............#23......#45 1b2...........b3 b4.......5 Makes sense why there's a dimisnished 4th ( b4) or bb6 ( loc b4, bb6) 1 b2.....b3.b4......b5.bb6.......b7......8 The lydian #2.... 1...........#2 3 #4 5 6 7 8 mix #2, #4 1............#2 3 #4 5 6 b7 8 1, 3, 5, b7 or 1, #2, 5, b7 1, #2, #4,,,dim....1, #2, #4, 6 FULL......1, #2, #4, b7 half it's the samething with Loc b4....( lots of jazz guitar likes this mode) you can also make that chord AUGMENTED.....1, b4 b6...( All Maj3 intervals) You can do the sameting with the phrgian dominant If you count from the C note...pushing up from A min C ionian C #5 C #4, #5 C #2, #4 #5... See how you can also play the C as minor becuase of the #2
