I’m a current optometric technician, and I love everything in this video. Everything is straight to the point, and actually details why we look at what we look at with the eye. I’m looking at becoming an optometrist, and I highly anticipate my future endeavors.
this is a very well done video, I'm really interested in becoming an optometrist and this video helped me explore deeper into it!
My eyes were self-conscious while watching this great video.

Thank you for this!!! It really made my mind up for me for the most part… I have always had eye troubles growing up, and I have always been fascinated to know what is going on with someone’s eyes in certain circumstances. So thank you for the educational video!

Wow, I was searching info about optometry and your video was so INTERESTING that I didnt feel those 12 mins
I feel obligated to share my experiences. Optometry was good to me and my family during my working years; however, those days are gone. I fear that idealistic graduates are walking out of schools ill-prepared for the reality of the employment/private practices. I have a son who is a commercial airline pilot. He earns, in salary/benefits/ about twice what an optometrist makes. He had to work his way from small commuter airlines but at least he was not going to school and incurring mounting debt. Never discount the value of " employee benefit packages"... typically optometrist are not offered benefit packages... buying single person health care is very costly. I regret sounding like Negative Nancy, but I think perspective students must realize they are being fed a picture of a world that does not exist outside of academia.

Is this specifically to the US or Canada? I am Canadian and wondering about a career in optometry. What do you think about the job prospects/ job growth in this field? I know that careers like pharmacy are speculated to be in jeopardy with AI

@@Sophiesdays Greeting Sophie: This is a very important decision that will affect your quality of life for decades to come. Please talk to as many optometrists as you can. Don't just talk to those in academia or recent graduates. I have only experience with optometry in USA. I knew several M.D.s from Canada and Ireland; they described misery under socialist medicine. Be thorough in your investigation. This is a critical point in life. Best wishes for you.

Any tips about going through school and becoming a optometrist?
Is it true that the alger brush can roll up the epithelial layer of the conjunctiva ? and do you use it only on the cornea for the metallic infiltrates ?
Good tips

Currently taking O chem. It’s not too bad. It’s just lots of memorization and lots of practice problems if you want to get an A. As for physics, go to class, study daily, do practice problems, get a tutor, and find a study group. You should do good if you take the steps needed.

GREAT VIDEO! Im thinking of going into optometry myself but sometimes get grossed out by certain things (i.e. if there was a large item stuck in the eye, completely bloodshot eyes, eye falling out of the socket, etc). What would be your advice for someone like me?? (i.e. you will get used to it over time, maybe optometry is not for you, you barely ever see scenarios like that, etc) ANY ADVICE IS APPRECIATED!

I’ve been in the field for about 5 years now as a tech starting out then optician to manager! Seeing that is sooooo rare! I have personally never seen that! But the craziest thing I’ve seen is someone’s eye permanently damaged from sleeping in contacts & a young girl had a tumor & found out at the old doctors office I worked at!
It looks like a lot of people did not know that even the wrong eye drops given for the wrong eye condition even pink eye can lead to blindness which may not be the optometrist fault as they are not only a doctor of eyeglasses because they do not perform eye surgeries like opthalmologist since people are so specific, most should at least know the theories of angles of reflection and refraction according to Sir Isaac Newton in middle and high school for those who did not even graduate high school and assume equally intelligent with at least some eye doctors!
Improve vision with a minus lens.
My doctor dinose me with glaucoma in the eyes. I have to use eye drops everyday.
Do you use a lot of physics on a daily basis? (I sure hope not)

I have no interest in becoming an optometrists however I never understood why there is such a huge disparity in price between my local independent optometrist and retail. This is probably it. Retail I’m in and out of the chair in 10 minutes, maybe less. There is no real exam. Thanks
You said that you need 4 years of college and 4 years of optometry school to become optometrist. So 8 years in total. But my University is offering bachelor studies of Optometry for 4 years, that I can join straight after high school and I could get an optometrist license. So i guess it would be enough 4 years of studying for me? Or am I missing something?

That’s probably some sort of vision science undergrad degree that touches on relative topics and gets you better prepared for optometry school. You would still need 8 years (unless you can fast track undergrad)

I am an Optometrist. On the contrary of your view towards people not taking good care of their eyes, I love hearing my recurring clients complains of their eyes often because more money can be made. In fact, I would intentionally prescript my clients with slight deviations which is enough for them to come back to make another pair of glasses within 2 - 3 months. I do this at least 3 times yearly for every client. Additionally, I would always find fault in them for not taking good care of their eyes while encouraging them to upgrade their lens quality (honestly, it is redundant and expensive), giving them a perceived assurance of their eyes being well protected. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, IT MUST BE FUNNY. IT IS THE RICH MAN'S WORLD.
