    For me, the new subtitling is better because I often found myself subconsciously reading the English subtitles, even when it wasn't necessary. Now I can just read the Dutch subtitles, and can always click the CC button if English subtitles are necessary. I hope you guys continue with the new subtitling method!

    I also prefer the older version. When I watch this video on my phone, I have to choose between having the English subtitles on our not, because if they're on, they cover the Dutch ones. I like to compare the languages and that's actually what I like the most in the easy languages channels.

  • @jamesarmel
    @jamesarmel2 жыл бұрын

    I definitely prefer the old version. It always struck me as the best, and most convenient, subtitling method I'd ever seen for language learning. For example, if a slang word I don't know is used by a Dutch person interviewed on the street, then I can quickly glance down to see both the Dutch and the smaller English subtitles and it clicks immediately (both the word in Dutch and it's translation), without me having to interrupt the flow of the video by turning on the captioned English subtitles which then cover the original Dutch subtitles in a black box rather than appearing more subtly below them as the original subtitles you provided nicely did. The experience is now more like pausing to pick up a dictionary and interrupting your flow while reading a book whenever you don't know a word. It was MUCH smoother before.

    @@EasyDutch On my Windows, the English caption usually covers the Dutch subtitles but you can move it up to other parts of the video (it won't stay to the bottom though). On my IPhone, the position is fixed and is usually below the Dutch subtitles, depending on how long the sentence is. In any event, I personally prefer the new version but since so many of your viewers want the old version back, I wouldn't mind if you bring it back in the next video. When I'm learning a new language, I just don't want to go back to the English translation all the time because after a few times of watching, I basically understand the gist of the conversations and the English translation is not necessary. Maybe the advanced students would like to practice in a harder level, but for beginners, the two-languages subtitles seems a lot better to pick up some words and having feedback without having to pause, get back and turn on subtitles. And even because no-subtitles or dutch-only subtitles can be found in news on youtube, or any kind of dutch video with auto-subtitles That's my perapective :) Dankjewel! @@EasyDutch I am an advanced Dutch student, C1 working toward C2. The best thing about Easy Dutch to me is people occasionally using slang I may not have heard yet when you interview them on the street. The best thing about the original subtitles is that I can easily look down and see both the Dutch word/phrase I wasn't familiar with and the English translation without having to turn on subtitles that will then cover the Dutch text unless I then take an additional step of shifting them around the screen somewhere. Anyway, if you're going to change them you're going to change them. I've made my best effort to persuade you of the value (nay, brilliance!) of the original format.

I do know more and some Russian words :) and I think these people never visited Russia. That might be the biggest reason. And also how you ask the question to the people can also play a roll. What do you know about the Russian art for example? because if you ask: what do you think about Russia.... then a lot of people would start about politics because of the period in time that we are in the past week. In my case I know 2 russians and I know 1 person from Kazachstan which might helped me by knowing more cultural things but I dont know for sure.
