We thought it was so funny that we started singing it all the time. When our grandmother heard this, she screamed "stop it, they have ears everywhere." The ones who say they're apolitical do so because "don't act up and you'll be fine" is how it works in Russia (especially now) and their life has not been impacted much by the events so not much reason to speak out. Now if their lives were to be impacted enough, there would most likely be a lot more open criticism. However in Russia the system has set the threshold for that pretty high, purposefully of course.

honestly I've seen it a lot with russians in social media or elsewhere. They either claim to be apolitical or 'neutral and unbiased', usually when criticising what they believe to be western ideas or media. Putin has been in power for almost 25 years now and he's built a state-controlled media and information landscape that has effectively beaten down the population into either political indifference or cynicism. They either stopped caring and don't think anything will change anyway, or are steeped in conspiratorial thinking.

A lot of "I'm neutral" or "I don't know anything about that". Part of the reason people are comparing Russia to 1939 Germany right now is because of tepid responses like these. Dissenters in 1939 Germany were also punished or killed. So they turned the other way and stayed silent as mass genocide was carried out by their country. There was a quote by a German who lived through these times that I read, and it was something like, "You look back, and remember where if one of you had stood up, maybe the rest would have stood up, but no one stood up."

I never understood how some one like Hitler could come to power until that man got elected in my country, and it was scary. So this is not to say Americans or other countries don't have fascism too. It's not to say I was sometimes too exhausted to even fight it, because although I did fight, I was also tired a lot. However, it should be noted that Russians are more discreet generally & don't just volunteer their political or religious views to strangers on the street (especially on camera, for zero reward). I've been living in Moscow a while & I notice that people don't go in for smalltalk & unsolicited exchanges of opinion. The Z is now appearing online, in posters, and leaflets often accompanied with СвоихНеБросаем = "We don't abandon our own" roughly. IE, it's the equivalent in Russia of a "Support our Troops" message here in the states. What it means (other than Western) in the military context, I am not sure.

in military context the Russians marked their vehicles with symbols (Z,V,X,O). Each symbol means from where the troops are coming. The "We don't abandon our own" slogan is referring to the propaganda narrative implying that Ukraine's citizens with Russian roots are being oppressed and held hostage by the "nationalists" and thus need to be "liberated". Which is extremely ironic since there are Russian bodies scattered all over the battlefields with no attempt from the Russian forces to collect them, and Ukrainian soldiers doing all the work as well as identifying the soldiers and getting the news across to the families.

"Z" - East Russia, "Z" in square venicles from Crimea, O from Belarus, V marines, X chechens, A special operations. It's how Ukraine millitary labeled them, but it wasnt 100% accurate. Anyway Z meaning of support for "special operation" given only by propaganda and regular people who support war. Maybe Russian goverment will use it for something later. In the recent rally that Putin gave for the eight anniversary of the Crimea annexation it was written above Putin "Zа мир без нацисма", (for peace without nazism) instead of the correct "За мир без нацисма" using the Cyrillic script. The Russian constitution declares that only the Cyrillic script can be used to write the Russian language. The fact that they use a Latin alphabet letter is not accidental.
