If you're American, I'd like to hear from you. What are some misconceptions that people around the world might have about the U.S. and its culture? Let's keep the discussion both critical and courteous of each other. In other words, nuanced. 👍

I think one misconception, which I'm glad the interviewees touched on, is the diversity in thought within the country. The US is almost as large as Europe both in population and in land area. Talking about "American culture" is almost as broad as talking about "European culture". It would be unfair to conflate the politics and ideologies of say Mississippi and California, in a similar way that it would be unfair to conflate the politics and ideologies of Spain and Hungary.

Europeans are also egotistical, arrogant, delusional, rude, and brainwashed. • I swear all of you have the critical thinking skills of a walnut. Because why do they believe everything? Their gullibility never fails to amaze me. • They really believe anything stupid about the U.S. without checking to see if true but somehow Americans are the stupid ones. • Damn, Europeans really are gullible if they believe all the shit they're hearing. Yet America contributes more to humanity BECAUSE of individualism. You see, individualism gives incentives for one to work hard and to produce more for society. We see this in competition leading to innovation. This has brought many great American technological advancements, like the smartphone, google, CRISPR, space exploration, etc. America has in a way advanced humanity greatly on only a few hundred years

It’s kind of sad that the only exposure they get about America is media or politics. Even though only a couple hundred years old, the U.S. has many many different cultures, accents, and traditions varying between states and even within states. The only thing that’s general is that we are under the same federal government. But it’s the same in America when educating yourself on the different countries and cultures throughout Europe, visiting or researching yourself is the only way to learn.

US politics is so dominant of a topic…especially so post Trump. And popular culture is also arguably our biggest export. But I think these people I spoke to tool a very nuanced view. In their minds, I got the sense there is general perceptions about American culture and then major differences when you drill down to the individual level. Thanks for watching and leaving a thoughtful comment. 👍

As many WWII historians have stated, it is challenging to say definitely what would have happened without us. Yes, it is widely believed that without the entry of the US into WWII, Nazi Germany's defeat would have been much more difficult and protracted. Our entry brought significant resources, manpower, and industrial capacity to the Allied cause, which greatly contributed to the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany. However, the contributions of other Allied nations, such as the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom, were also crucial in achieving victory.

It's easy to reduce opinion about the US to the political left and right, but the problem with that is the left and right are two square holes while the American people themselves are this giant round peg desperately trying to find something in one square hole or the other that is better than the other square hole. You see, American politics has been hijacked by the extremes of both sides and as much as Europeans, especially, want to believe that this defines America- this great schism- most of us despise the fact that we have so little say in how our country is run. Add to this the fact that opposing sides despise the idea of compromise and perhaps expend most of their collected energies in undermining what they see as the greatest threats to their separate existences- the centrist point of view- and maybe then you'll understand how unfair it is to judge us by what is reported in the news. In fact news reports, movies, television shows, conversations with those few of us who are wealthy enough to visit your countries, none of these things are representative of the majority point of view of Americans, because we have no voice and as much as we crave change, the opportunities for change seem at present somewhat hopeless.

We took the world out of the dark ages and we are literally the reason humanity is so modern. We took the world out of the dark ages and we are literally the reason humanity is so modern. Every other country in the world hasn’t accomplished shit there’s no comparison when it comes to America and the world knows that, that’s why they wish they could live with us. I don’t know why European people feel the need to impress us Americans or try and prove themselves to us or try so hard to make themselves noticed by us Americans or try to make themselves feel better by trying to downplay humanities greatest nation… Americans are obviously elite in everything that we do. You guys don’t realize how embarrassing you are to Americans. Americans laugh when little European people try and call americans stupid knowing americans literally are the reason why the world has advanced. Now imagine life before America existed? You’re welcome. Americans carry humanity so how you gonna hate from outside of the club? YOU CANT EVEN GET IN 😂 🇺🇸 I’m just glad my ancestors moved to “the new world” and I’m not still stuck in Europe because I can’t blame you guys. I’d be mad and probably hate on Americans too knowing I got left behind and could’ve been born in America instead. 😭😂 I know you hate to hear it but we all know Europe youth secretly wishes they lived in America so they could go to Travis Scott shows and experience “the American dream…” like the rest of the world does. So yeah Europeans, you definitely do copy us lol, like the rest of the world does, it’s funny you all “hate” Americans until you meet one then you’re all asking us all about America and what it’s like to live here complimenting us non stop lol. (by the way that was so wild that some of you say Americans copy the Europe? copy WHAT exactly? Gross haha gross haha never! 🤮 You guys are like a lame weird boring wannabe version of us. Americans been trendsetters but you already knew that lol. • We also think of those corny ass wannabe gangsters you guys have in the Europe who TRY to copy American rap and throw up American gang signs. 😂 Like boy sit yo crumpet eating, king and queen having, European accent having ass down you ain’t no blood 🩸there’s nothing funnier than seeing videos of European wannabes with European accents throwing up American gang signs trying to act like he’s from LA and even wearing Lakers jerseys lol see? Even your lame ass rappers and wannabe gangsters straight up copy us too. Corny asses I wish you could see yourselves through our eyes. 😭🤣 Europe has kids under 10 years old having acid thrown at them, Europe has school stabbings, and Europe has mass school shootings.😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Europeans schools are call of duty stabbing edition. • Europe is a third world shit hole of a continent continent with it’s slums the U.N. determined nearly 1 billion people are living in slums.

I find something very funny about wearing a super bowl shirt and listening to American jazz in a dive bar, doing an interview in English where you criticize the US. Not saying that there weren't valid points, but it just seemed a bit obtuse... especially criticizing US politics as crazy when living in Hungary. This was interesting, but I've always noticed a general sense of superiority when visiting Europe that I found disagreeable and which I felt in this video. Like an older sibling bullying the younger one, or old-money people poking fun at new-money people. This is coming from someone who was born in Chile and moved to the US as a child, so maybe my perspective isn't completely indicative of US views.

You have to understand that the US is a very big country and very influential. As such, what happens there kinda leaks out to the rest of the world and americans dont do themselves any favors in the way the "advertise" themselves. America has many great things but what the media talks about mostly is the mass shootings, the polarization of the country and stuff like anti abortion and lack of healthcare. This things make the US seem like a not totally developed country. But i believe that behind all those controversies there is a great country that is not inferior to Europe xD

I know you are asking them for opinions, but the Europeans I have met feel it completely ok to start shitting on America almost immediately after me saying where I am from. Saying we are backwards, rude, like to bomb everything, uneducated about the world. So this is my response. The reason why we don't know the capital of some random European country, or even where the country is on a map is because we never hear anything about you. You have created almost nothing and have no cultural impact on the U.S. We live an ocean away from you and are not involved in European affairs. This does not apply to every country. The UK, France, Germany, Italy have a lot of cultural impact and most Americans know at least something about these countries. We are involved in worldwide conflicts as everyone looks to us for the answer. Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we get it really wrong. No one is looking to Hungry, Norway, Spain for help in a conflict or to play peacemaker. It's easy to criticize when you are not even in the game. Think about these scenarios, what happens if China starts infringing on patents or starts a trade war with Europe. What about oil and gas imports into Europe. If the middle east decided to screw over Europe, you have no supplier of oil or gas. How would you handle the Ukrainian conflict? You don't have enough weapons to help anyone. Russia and China could literally do whatever they wanted. The U.S. ensures Europe's security, international shipping routes, is a main source of oil and gas for Europe. Cultural Issues including gun control and healthcare. Guns are a double-edged sword. It provides a way to protect your family against criminals, protect yourself from a corrupt government, hunting, target shooting. However, the gun crime in America is high. With that being said, you have a .0039% chance of being shot and killed in the U.S. It is an issue, but Europeans act like we all are carrying around guns and just having shootouts in the street on a daily basis. Healthcare costs are shit in America so there is nothing I can say about that. If you don't have good insurance, you are out of luck. Consumerism- It depends where you look in the U.S. If you go to LA and New York, then you may get the impression that America is all about a consumeristic society. However, traveling to the heartland, Midwest, and the south you may see that it is not the case. It is more relaxed in those areas of the country.

Here are some of the main differences between the US and Europe: 1. The USA is the only large country that does not have a universal healthcare system, everything is paid for. The birth of a child is a minimum of $10,000, in Europe everything is free. 2. The USA does not have paid annual leave, in Europe it is a minimum of 3 weeks 3. The USA does not have paid maternity leave for women, in Europe it is a minimum of 6 months. 4. In the USA you can buy weapons everywhere and everyone carries them. There are a lot of murders. In Europe it is rare. 5. In Europe, transportation is much better, people don't use cars as much, people are healthier, they walk more and ride bicycles. And they eat healthier. Of course, Americans are nice and cheerful people, they are welcome everywhere.

Ive met many wonderful Americans, and I dont beleve in generalizing all Americans. With that said a common trait I have noticed in America is cannot take criticism about the US. I am seeing it right here in the comments also. Even when the negatives of the country cause damage to Americans. Far to many Americans will dismiss that anything could possibly be wrong with the USA. There is no best country on Earth and America seems to think it is the best. Im sorry that ship has sailed, and unfortunately seems to be sinking.

And yeah the usa has no real culture compared to europe and they don't like that at all. Also the food isn't very good unless you go to an real expensive restaurant. The usa doesn't look after his people at all like most of europe does. 850 billion to the army but the lowest ranks are on food stamps. So many politicians are taking bribes that it smells like a banana republic. And of course reg. people hoping to change that so they voted for trump, not knowing he's an even bigger crook.
