What Do Atheists Believe | Emeka-Nigeria | The Atheist Experience 945

The Atheist Experience 945 for November 22, 2015 with Matt Dillahunty and Tracie Harris.
What is Atheism? What do you believe in?
WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I give Emeka props for asking “What do you believe?” He isn’t taking what other people, other theists around him have said, he is asking an actual Atheist. Asking questions is the start. He didn’t get angry at the responses he received. He may start thinking of the circular logic of believing the bible is the word of god because the bible says it’s the word of god. Emeka said Muslims have a right to be Muslims. That very forward thinking than many other theists, who have called in.

" he is asking an actual Atheist. Asking questions is the start." The question "what do atheists believe?" is a ridiculous question. Atheism is a non-belief that a god exists, period. I can see that; within the confines of what his society has foisted on him, and how his religious upbringing has fogged his mind, Emeka is actually being very gracious and open-minded... but he's coming from a world where all the things he's saying just IS. Nobody questions it, nobody argues it. It's not a question. "God is real" and "The bible is the word of god and is inerrant truth" is as natural and unassailable as "the sky is blue" and "water is wet". Ideas which are perfectly natural and ordinary to us... he's never heard them, he's never even considered that those ideas could exist. I think he did the best he could do considering his mindspace at the time of this call. I wonder how he's doing these days, six years later?

The Nigerian Christian community is filled with lots of different Christian groups and each have ridiculous sets of doctrines. You have the white garments churches ie, the big and small celestial churches and the cherubim & seraphim churches located nearly in every street corners. To big Pentecostal churches and big Apostolic churches and other privately owned churches. Also people like Emeka have been brainwashed to believe in a sky daddy deity who could provide for his needs based on an ancient book. Emeka is a typical Nigerian suffering from religious indoctrination. He got owned tonight by simple logic and all he could do is laugh. He realised how stupid his beliefs were. I have been asked for series of money donations by some friends to help develop their churches. Each time I turn them down, all I get is flat out abuse and insults. To questions like “why don’t you want to give back to the god that created you?” I rather give to charities, to hungry people and to homeless people than give my money to some charlatans.

This is the problem with having in-depth, complex, difficult discussions between people where there is no “primary” language. I’ve don’t this before (countless times) and they just go in circles. Also, you can tell that Matt is having a discussion with someone that has no better than a 6th grade education. When THIS happens, you have to bring the level of the discussion down to “There is no Santa Clause/God.” and why. Slow. Simple. Deliberate. Easy to understand. If Matt breaks out logical fallacies, the conversation is over.

It seems to me, tyere are a lot of people who believe in this stuff without reading their book & under the assumption that everyone believes in some deity. Of course, the other ones are wrong & their beliefs are correct but most don't investigate because their entire circle of friends and family and work associates hold those same beliefs. All of a sudden, they hear about people who don't believe in a religion at all. Without thinking, they call in or start arguing. Then they are faced with things they never thought about. The Koran diminishes Jesus? Only in as much as Muslims don't believe Jesus was the Son of God and that he wasn't resurrected iirc Otherwise Jesus is favourably acknowledged in the Koran. If I've missed something I'd be grateful if someone would point out where EDIT: I'm no scholar of religion. But I have, for about a third of my 63 years of existence, been interested in comparative mythology and have a basic grasp of the major world religions. What I was expressing in my OP was a surprise at Matt potentially being wrong. As I have already stated, the manner and tone was such that he could have been understood to be saying that Muslims have little regard for Jesus. Which is incorrect. I was asking, rhetorically, if there was something in the Koran of which I was unaware that Jesus is described in a derogatory manner. Because AFAIK there isn't I'll give Matt the benefit of doubt and assume that he was referring to the lesser role ascribed to Jesus in the Koran. The request to be informed of anything I have missed in the Koran, was not a call to be repeatedly told what I already know.
