WHAT do AMERICANS think about AMERICA?

James Prime here and In this video, I went around asking Americans what they thought about America. No political agenda, no angle, no motive. I just wanted to see what everyday average Americans thought about the country and its people. The questions I asked were:
0:00 intro
0:34 What do you think about America in general?
2:10 Does the American dream still exist?
4:28 What do you think about the average American?
7:12 What does the rest of the world think about us?
7:32 What is something you like about America?
9:50 What is something you DISLIKE about America?
11:41 Where do you see the country in the next 10 years?
Overall it was a pretty lighthearted video. Thank you to all the beautiful Americans who took the time out of their day to make this video possible. If anyone actually reads this, I want to hear your thoughts on America! Joey, I know you'll probably read this so you can just tell me in person, but if you want to actually participate, write it down in the comment section ma dude. Alright I think thats it...Yup. I'm out! #Chicago #JamesPrime, #America

Even as a foreigner, I like America. I used to view America negatively, but when I actually went there for a few months, my views really changed. I was wrong, Americans are really nice people! I felt so welcomed here! I felt bad for viewing America in such a negative light. I’m truly sorry for that. Push the media and politics, America is a truly nice place! 😆🇺🇸 [Edit: I am from a not-so-good country, wouldn’t say horrible, but I don’t like where my country is going right now. It’s heading down for the sewers at this point, and the politics and community made me (and A LOT of others) feel like an unwanted guest in my (or their) own home. Honestly speaking, the fact that you can voice your opinions and criticize the leaders is so good! I would be thrown to prison if I did!]

I live in a majority Dem city and Democrats don't HATE America. They just want the best for our country so are most Americans, Rep/Dem/Ind. They're just critical with our current administration and let's be honest, no politician or political entity is perfect and it's ok to criticise any form of government. At least the Democrats that I know and have talked to, they sound exactly like this. They don't bash or hate on our country, they hope that it was better than what we have now which is subjective and I think Rep feel the same way lol. Politics is complicated and that's why I try to avoid it unless someone wants to talk about it with me.

James your interviews give others an opportunity to show us what the outside world sees in America. I've watched both your interviews from Australia and UK and there is a larger misconception on us in the larger population then your video's show (I totally understand you can't interview everyone) but it's a great start to open up a dialog for people to talk in you comments. I've found out of both countries Australia is more comparable to the US in so many areas, but then again their not so steep in old traditions as the UK as their a country about the same age as ours. I'd love to hear from France if you have a chance to visit there, that I think would be interesting

  • @bushmg1061

    @bushmg1061

    3 жыл бұрын

@Abigail Boots The media definitely divides us, but it’s more a side effect of the business model than intentional. Cable news is a great example. There just aren’t enough stories for true 24/7 reporting, so they resort to pundits and pandering to fill time and keep people watching. When CNN, MSNBC and FOX NEWS appeal to the audience’s political biases, the filler material practically writes itself. Of course, cable news bias is nothing compared to the internet, and particularly social media. Now, algorithms can determine exactly the political content that most appeals to you and force feed it to you so you keep viewing the ads it comes with. Look, there is no conspiracy against the country by the media against our country. In fact, we have the free market to thank for dissolution of common understanding we now face. The cause of this problem is the tragic reality that what makes us angry also makes us click.

Interesting answers, and even more interesting comments. Especially interesting how so many people stated freedom or freedoms as our greatest attribute. It always makes me question the depth of American understanding of freedom especially as it is associated with democracy. I think many would be interested to know that Canada is considered the most Democratic country in the world and by extension the freest. However, in America, Canada is generally considered a Socialist country. America actually has over the past years slipped closer and closer to the state of a flawed democracy by all standards. Many of the commentators below expressed the concern that interviewees would be bashing America. The hypocrisy of those comments is as pointed out by one of the elderly ladies interviewed, the very core of freedom. The fact that Americans "bash" America is in my mind is an incredible statement of freedom, and democracy, and a true expression of Patriotism. It is there in the preamble of the constitution "We the people of the United States, in order to form a MORE perfect union". The idea that America is perfect or beyond criticism, or that any given group of Americans who oppose the idea of American exceptionalism are anti-America or lack love for their country is far removed from the idea that is America. The thing most precious to most people; children, are not beyond correction and discipline, we correct and discipline out of our endless love for them, and our desire for them to develop into the very best people they can possibly be. This is if nothing more our responsibility as parents, and so it is our same responsibility as citizens.

My family moved here in America from Asia 29 years ago and I still think that America is the most welcoming and less racist country in the world...no matter what the media tries to tell you. And there’s so many opportunities here that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. Just think about it, a black man became a president of this country. It’ll never happen in Europe or in Asia.

Side note: A major thing MOST of the other countries had to say about Americans is that we are "loud", and then most followed up with things like, "It's okay though, they speak their mind.", "It's kind of cool how they just say what they are thinking.", and there were many more similar. I get it now, they don't think we are loud, they think we explain a LOT, and continue with our points by referencing things like personal experiences and such. You know why we talk so long when we answer questions? We have been taught that in schools, we need to back up our statements with proof, it's awesome. I am rambling here, but I think that when they say we are "loud" they just mean we defend and respond in length, much like my current post. They aren't used to that. If you watch all of this guys videos, you will see that the Europeans don't ever have as long an answer to the very same questions as Americans do :)

I don't want to offend someone but it's a fact that Slavery and War played a huge role in the past of the US. Of course not everything America did was bad but I wouldn't consider it's History as good. And even today the United States of America have a lot of Problems, like Racism, the bad Health Care System or the fact that many Americans are poor.

I totally believe our country is great but it could be better. But she has really lost her way since the revolutionary war. we fought for a idea to have for own. Since then we forgot what that idea is. Since then we have had more focused on power instead of the people. The people of of the United States are more important then total power. We got the idea from the Greeks about politics but the idea has faded away. The people of the Greeks used to vote the person into politics instead of using money to get your way in. I got to say George Washington was probably the last and first president to get in without using money. Such a true leader.

I think that schools should educate their students more about other countries and their history. It seems to be all focused on American history. America can seem a little self-centered. Maybe if we learn about the history of other countries, we would get more respect. A lot of countries think Americans are stupid. Not all Americans but there are a lot. It should also be a requirement in school to learn at least a second language. Starting even at Kindergarten. So many other countries know English and it’s not even their native language.

As a truck driver at 22 I feel the United States is very diverse and it's amazing coast to coast, north to south and then there's the this gray patch called the midwest which is odd. Lol JK. The midwest is amazing!! Thanks for the corn and other products they produce. Every state has alot of different things to offer. I heard some say the United States has no culture. I thought it was true but the cowboy culture varies in every state. The food. The accents. The hospitality. Lots of culture. What I don't like is the racism. The jail system. The countless laws. Education costs. The religious judgement and California's impossible concept of beauty, making young men and women change their features to fit in. I feel the United States has come a very long way and still has a long way to go. @James Prime you're very fortunate to travel to these other amazing countries and interview them. Hearing their thoughts of the U.S. was funny, cringe and intriguing. Hearing our citizens thoughts were also a surprise. Alot of good things said about the U.S. some negative things. Overall every country has their ups and downs. Its what makes everyone different but our differences bring us together. "Opposites Attract."

When I hear people say that the US doesn’t have any culture, I like to point out sports, film, music etc. I think they say that because it’s just a stereotype. And you are correct! I always count my blessings whenever I go on an overseas trip. I never take it for granted because I know a lot of people aren’t able to do so. Super thankful for that. I agree with you that every country has their ups and downs. I see it everywhere I go. No matter what country I’m in, you’ll always find the same thing, people just trying to live. In his poem The English Flag, Kipling writes "And what should they know of England who only England know?". Americans here are being asked what they think of America. It's a question you can't really answer unless you know the world outside of America. You need to see America as others see it, and you can't do that from within. From my travels around the US, it's rather obvious that most Americans know staggeringly little about the world outside of America - which tends to mean that what most Americans think of America is what they're told to think of it, and you can see the truth of that in the answers here.

I wouldnt give two damns if you personally felt like the country you were born in is the best country. I certainly wouldnt take it so personally. Everyones going to find their home the best. I swear some people just actively look for reasons to be annoyed. The people in this video werent really extreme in their appreciation for their country, I really dont see your issue.

@@simonw3858 It's pretty clear that you're coming at this video with a preconceived stereotype of Americans, which is making you overreact to these people's completely luke warm opinions on their home country. None of these people "repeatedly" claimed America is the greatest country. Are you saying we all collectively say that, because thats not very constructive as it's far too general. This video alone certainly isn't enough to prove that claim. Beyond that, if you did claim your country was the greatest in the world as if it were a fact, I still would not take it personally or have any issue with it. I wouldnt give a damn. I appreciate my country, but I don't care enough to be offended that someone thinks theirs is better. It's like you're taking it as a personal attack or something.

@@mike12jrw1111113 It's practically a taught belief. It's actually painfully obvious the way media and the political class preach it... that's not even touching on the schools. Only those who travel have a somewhat informed opinion and it very limited to the travel they actually do. But lets not pretend its isolated to the individuals in the video it's the American slogan. Also I don't take it as a personal attack I just find it kind of gross in the same way I find apple enthusiasts who clamber into apple stores and freak out about the release of a new iphone giving apple employees high fives while being a totally consumer unfriendly corporation. It's cult like behaviour. It's totally okay to love your country that still doesn't make it the best. Nor do you need to chant it to the rest of the world, which Americans do.. do.

@@simonw3858 Okay.. You need to stop getting your opinions about a country of people from the internet. I live here, I can assure you we don't go walking around talking about how this is the best country ever. We're all just normal people with varying opinions of the country, many of which are immigrants traveling from other countries. Most people don't even have an opinion on the country, more an opinion of their state. America is so damn huge people are more likely to have pride in the state they live in if anything. What you're talking about is (as you said) whats portrayed by the media and our government. Is there patriotism in this country? For sure, it's certainly a thing, but at the same time the country is so divided many people hate the site of the American flag and think it represents racism. We're not some monolith, it's a ginormous country that differs in culture even from state to state. And again, I really think you're overreacting to the thing said in this video, I don't feel like anyone here was patriotic to an extreme extent. It's not like its a bunch of gun toting, cowboy hat wearing "god bless Amurica" types of people. Sure there's some pride in the country on display in the video but I really don't see anything that extreme.

Wrong. North America is a continent. South America is another continent. Of those 2 continents there are 35 countries. Of those 35 countries there is only one country who officially has “America” in its name. Also you don’t call people from Canada “Americans.” Or people from Mexico, “Americans.” You only call people from America, Americans.
