Its a shame you couldnt go to a roller cam and that way have less issues you have with a flat tappet. What brand of cam did you use? There is no way to build a reliable race engine with less than heavy duty race parts. You also need a dial bore gage to check your cylinders for roundness and taper. I have a fowler digital dial bore gage new in the box if you are interested let me know.Look up the new price and make me an offer.I just want someone to get use out of it.

Josh- You have been misinformed about Ford water pumps. They come in both CW and CCW configurations... they've been doing it for years. The reverse models are used mostly in marine and equipment applications. That is a hard-learned fact, and they will cause problems similar to what you are dealing with! Do ya recon you could get a mule, cow, and maybe a turkey to roam around 'yer shop too??? God knows how many manuals, gaskets and such those goats have ate when no one was looking! I realize they are more pets than critters to the family, but it drives me nuts every time I see the 4 legged garbage disposals munching away on potentially important stuff. God Bless, and Be Safe! edit: If you put a stinkin' chevy engine in that Ford, I'm gonna bribe that piglet to chase y'all around the shop. Some things just ain't natural, brother.

When I was a teenager, one of my best friends had a Fairmont Futura like that. The only difference was, it was dark metallic orange - we called it The Golden Chariot. And yes, it was a hand-me-down from his grandma. I think we actually spent more time pushing that car then riding in it.

I went thru two big blocks in a row, with solid roller cams. went back a 3rd time and changed back to solid lifters with the oil hole on the bottom of the lifter, been together now for 20 years. all the metal has gone thru your bearings, so don't just put the engine back together without going thru your bearings. they might be fine, but make sure you check.

Messing up is how we learn anyway. In the 70s I owned 2 speed shops. Roller cams were for all out race cars. Car manufactures did not make them. My customers had two main issues. First was vacuum leaks which would signal the usually holley carb to open the power valves, run rich and wash lube off the cylinder walls. Problem 2 was cams being wiped out. When I sold one new, I always included a tube of moly di-sulfide for break in lube. But theres more. Use it straight, dont blend it with oil no matter what you tube says. Most cam manufacturers have catalogs or a site that should say this. Its not as critical on a roller cam, but some spring pressures can be high, so may still use it. With flat tappet cams its a must. Used cams is a crap shoot. Good luck. Plus you rarely get the best choice for your purpose. Most want a cam that is too much for the street. It may sound cool, but poor driveability is not a good trade off. Before starting make sure the battery is charged and timing is set, to avoid cranking on a new cam. Make sure there is gas in the carb, etc. And water in the radiator. I know, these are basics but its how cams get ruined. The idea is an immediate start and take the engine to about 2000 rpm or so for 15 minutes or more. Major cam manufacturers usually have their own guidelines. I dont know if you calculated your compression ratio, but its a good idea when using domed pistons. Using a lower initial compression ratio has some advantages including easy starting on the street. It also gives flexibility to crank up the boost. Those new heads from a reputable company are not an expense, they are an investment that increase reliability, and prevents the need to tear an engine down from faulty used parts to get it running properly. Many used part such as cams, carbs and engines assembled by others are risky. Finding a reputable machine shop that has a good reputation for professionally building both street and race engines is a must. Even if you need to ship parts. Something as simple as reconditioning rods that usually needs to be done can save having to buy a new rotating assembly. Its an investment that prevents doing things twice. How your kids are interested in the cars is kind of different. Its refreshing to see family involvement in todays world. Its great to see. They are learning how to think and how decision making works which will help prepare them for the world. You channel has things that many can relate to so I wish you all success.

Love love love that Fairmont. Little tip for painting your wheels. Mount tires before painting, but don't seat the beed. Take a plastic garbage bag, grab it from the the middle of the bag, and make a cone out of it. Then take the end of that cone, and use it as your starting point, to measure from the inside center of the rim, to the edge of the rim. Cut hole, stretch the bag over the rim, the rest will cover the tire, paint your wheels. This saves you from scratching your new paint, mounting your tires.

@@ttersu I've done it that way. I have also used a big square piece of cardboard, cut the hole to fit the inside of the beed, cut a slit down one side. You can then stretch the cardboard around the rim, and it works really well. I like the cardboard or the garbage bags because you can reuse them multiple times

I have been building engines for over 30 years, and I don't use anything but a roller cam/hydraulic roller lifter setup. I have nothing against a solid setup as I used to use it quite often, but regardless of the manufacturer, finding a good solid lifter these days is a crap-shoot. You may as well spend the money on lottery tickets. Btw, I believe I mentioned a possible water passage issue on your last video covering this engine. Good luck, and keep pushing ahead.

I had a Twin Turbo 454 with a banks system on my 33" 1996 Airstream Land Yacht and High speed tires 10 ply Michelene. I went for the Guiness Book World Record on top speed with it and it went 128.9mph. It was the fastest Motorhome on record. No one tried to ever beat me. I still had pedal left but that was my limit. That Motorhome lasted a long time I sold it in 2010. It got 14mpg with the boat on the back. You could cruise it at 95 on a long straight away. One hundred fifty gallon fuel tank and a 6kw generator to run both A/C's and I treated the engine with Slick 50 never had a problem. In 2015 the owner disassembled the engine after 80k miles and it was absolutely clean inside and out and the Trans had minute wear. He still has it and that thing will run. He spent ten grand getting it disassembled and said it was just like throwing the money away it needed nothing. Had to put a high volume fuel system.

You are supposed to turn the regulator on the leak down tester disconnected till the right gauge stops at “SET” and use that pressure on the left gauge as a test pressure. With all the ones i have had was generally 35-40psi, if you disconnect and reconnect the air without backing the regulator all way off then the gauges are likely wayyy off and inaccurate now.

Instead of spreading it out leave it accordion and put it in a vice and squeeze the crap outta it, all the oil will be "sqooze" out. Then when you un-accordion it, there's zero oil hiding the glitter. Takes an extra moment but you can see every spec of metal.

Sometimes you can take out the valve core, remove air chuck from coupler. Push coupler against valve core to get max air pressure inside casing. Also just saw w vid where guy uses pool noodle to close gap between sidewall and rim but he used a bead blaster as noodle was too short. Great video. Always entertaining and informative. Take care dude family.

So proud of you breaking the straight edge out and checking the surfaces you have to anytime you get them hot or rebuilding a engine and you are correct if this wasn’t a turbo car and you were running a thicker gasket you can get away with 3 to 5000 The new heads with the thicker decking will alow you to put more boost also with less off a chance to fail great upgrades don’t remember what head studs you are using but spend the money for some arp studs and definitely get roller cam and lifters Keep the videos coming

Have always used a flash light 🔦 with the straight edge to check cylinder head warp. If you see light under the edge it’s scrap if made of aluminium. Share your pain. With the fresh engine rebuild not going to plan. Had a Inlet cam seize 10min after starting a lotus twin cam. Was the machines shops fault. Lack of correct clearance. From that day I never trust anyones work. Always check everything. You can’t presume other people / companies work to your standards. Was a very expensive lesson in time and money. Really enjoy your content Josh & Family.
