The guitarist, Vernon Reid, is one of the most underrated guitarists out there. I loved loved loved this band. They didnt get half the credit they deserved as artists.

rated top 10 guitarists of the decade by Guitar Player Magazine. But outside of those that know about guitar players, yeah you are right. Red Hot Chile Peppers were the death of many bands back then, these guys and Faith No More both got crushed by the peppers. "Book these bands and you will not book us" was just one of the things rumoured to have happened.

I was a big fan as a kid. But honestly, as a white kid from Vermont with a very limited world view, I didn't "get" half of their music. As an adult with a broader world view, I not only enjoy the music, but appreciate the message.
I was a heavy metal singer back when these guys popped on the scene. All of us 'white' musicians loved them. The industry must not have. They came with it and man, they blew us away!

yeah i was a metal head in the 80s. I remember how surprised we were to see some brothers that could totally kill it with this kinda of music. We were so happy and excited to see them representing like that. They weren't just a gimmick either - they legit kicked ass. But turn around is fair play, so we made sure to send the rap-world Vanilla Ice. I think we rockers won that deal! lol

I bet their record label had trouble promoting them back in the 80's for obvious reasons. I was lucky enough to see them live in Toronto when they opened for the Rolling Stones. Great performers, they should have had more recognition but they didn't fit the package the music industry was selling and that is a shame. Good for the reaction videos, it brings the past back to the forefront for a new generation of fans.

Lead singer's name is Corey Glover, and if you've seen the 1986 hit movie "Platoon", you might recognize him as he played the character of Francis, who at the end of the movie told Charlie Sheen's character "we gonna get a high high!"

What you REALLY need to do is look up what a “cult of personality” is...hint he isn’t talking about his personality...and then go back and look at the lyrics. This song is very deep and so relevant right now in 2021!!!

To help... A cult of personality, or cult of the leader, arises when a country's regime - or, more rarely, an individual - uses the techniques of mass media, propaganda, the big lie, spectacle, the arts, patriotism, and government-organized demonstrations and rallies to create an idealized, heroic, and worshipful image of a leader, often through unquestioning flattery and praise.
Powerful, timeless and relevant. This band was so underrated.

That song was about the neighborhood we lived in for 3 generations. We were all priced out except for an uncle with a rent controlled apt. Residents of the Lower East Side survived AIDS, crack & landlords burning buildings for the insurance but not greedy real estate developers. The next wave of development is going on now where luxury skyscrapers are going up next to public housing and the developers are litigating the soul & culture right out of the city.

The cult of personality, people follow strong personalities, even when they lie and exploit them. All the people I this video were leaders who have a following, not based on what they teach but based on them. It's a Cult based on following a man. It's a think for yourself, don't be a follower, kind of song

Yes, "the cult of personality" is referring to the members of a cult who have chosen to follow someone that has used the media to spread their propogranda and deceive them. It is describing a bunch of people that fell for the lie. In this day and age, the cult of personality of the day would be Trumpsters. They bought all his lies, hook, line, and sinker. They think he is a great man that could do no wrong, no matter what he's actually done. They believed in the lie he sold to them via the media. It's an idea that's been around for a long time, but one that's been discussed using the phrase "the cult of personality" for just over 60 years now. The wikipedia article does a decent job of explaining it in more depth. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_of_personality

@@ClaytonMacleod while I can agree with the fact that Trump had a Cult of personality around him, I disagree with saying he used the media. They were 100% anti-Trump since the day he won in 2016 And they cried on national TV. Read the TIME magazine article on how the media, the tech industry billionaires, and politicians from both sides worked behind the scenes to make sure "The right outcome" happened. The article says "saved the election" but by saving it, they mean reported things one sided, ignored damaging facts that would have harmed Biden, changed voting laws, etc. The article isn't some right wing conspiracy, it's TIME magazine, and they view this manipulation of the public by the super rich and the media as something to be proud of. Also, from this video, a Cult of personality can be a very bad thing if the person uses the power to exploit the followers, but others in this video who had a Cult of personality that didn't are, Gandhi, JFK, MLK, and Malcom X, FD Roosevelt. In a article the singer said he was asking what "makes certain leaders, that are just human beings, have something else about them that makes people want to follow them. Barack Obama has this about him"

I remember the world premiere of this video on MTV back in 1988 (I was 21 yrs old). And yes, MTV played it on a constant loop it seemed, huh? But that was the case with just about every new big hit song that came out back then - LOL!
This was my mom’s favorite band for YEARS in the early 90’s. She saw them a dozen times live.
Seen these guys twice. Awesome energy, infectious grooves, amazing musicianship. Maybe the most underrated band of the late 80s-early 90s.
Saw them in 89 with the Stones. I was on the floor, pretty close, and the lead singer for Cult was singing and dissapeared suddenly. He fell off the front of the stage. Over two hundred concerts and I don't remember most, as I was usually pretty baked, but I do remember that one.

One of my absolute favorite bands. Back in the early '90's (like, last century!), they were the warm up band for The Rolling Stones at RFK Stadium in D.C. I went for Living Colour, The Stones just happened to be there!! One of the best concerts I've experienced!!
I was lucky enough to grow up with their music! Whoop! Whoop!
ZOINKS! Living Color ROCKS, Scooby! “Good Vibes my family”! The voice in the beginning is Malcom X btw! This song was politically and racially relevant when it came out and the song still applies today! Keep it coming! JFK is the voice in the solo, and FDR Is the voice at the end!

I saw this band on their first tour in Austin at Liberty Lunch when I was 16. It was so crowded, that at one point I picked up my feet - was just being moved back & forth. Great show.
Living Colour is a collection of great musicians who throw down on a concert stage! They have some gems: "Type", "Love Rears It's Ugly Head", "Middle Man".. My Vernon Reid avatar smiles every time someone reacts to this band!
I saw them live a couple of years ago in a little venue behind a pub near me. My God they are still so good. Absolutely flawless.

Hey, shout out to my new extended family! I just wanted to thank you two for this little reminder of some really good times during better days. My late wife and I used to jam out to this tune with the kids when Mtv played the video...back when they were about music. Thank you again for the memory. PEACE!!!!!
The album was released during my sophomore year of high school, so 1988-89...and yeah, the lead guitarist is a highly respected musician, he's played on many studio albums released by some heavy hitters, he's an L.A. legend and an absolute beast...
This is one of the first CDs I purchased. I had a thumping system, before they were commonplace, and this sounded so good. Vivid is a great album. These guys get after it.
one of the best guitarists right there
I'm lucky enough to have lived through music of 60s, 70s, 80,90, until now. Believe me music builds bridges for ALL to come together. I listened to these guys when they first appeared on the scene. Great video!
Y'all should revisit this song now. He basically was warning about following any personality that wants you to follow them blindly and conform. Leaders, presidents, celebrities, commercials, mainstream media, etc.
A very very underrated band, guitarist and singer. Great band... I think they debuted in the late 80’s
"Desperate People" is a must!!
What a lesson on how people show you what they want you to see, so that they can gain power!
*Still one that when it comes on I turn that shizz up to ELEVEN😁*
I was 16 when this album came out in 1988 (which makes me . . .old), and it still gives me the chills at how good it is- the vocals, the ultra-tight rhythm section, the shredding guitar, the spot-on lyrics- everything. I actually saw them at the first Lollapalooza in 1991 (like i said, I'm old).

a few bad decisions, a rent-a-center yamaha stereo and this very song got me evicted from my first apartment back in the day. lol
This was one of my favorite songs when I was in middle school in ‘88! My favorite radio station still plays it occasionally and literally 2 days ago it came on when I pulled into my garage coming home from work and I wouldn’t get out of my car until it was over. Toward the end my 17 year old son came into the garage to find out why I was listening to music loud in my car instead of coming inside😂

I really love your videos but what i love the most is Jai's laughter , at any given point im feeling down that laugh will brighten my day God bless u guys 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
its not about one's own personalities - it's about mind control/influence by talking heads that lead the blind and ignorant. They are the personalities that get a cult-like following and influence the viewers/listeners. "Only you can set you free" is the key phrase - meaning you can only break free of the rhetoric, lies, and manipulation of the machine by educating yourself and being a free-thinker. I love watching jai headbang. She is a legit rocker!!! love it. It's a shame this band didn't get more popularity cuz they were badass and their guitarist totally shreds. I remember when this song hit MTV. It was a jawdropping not only for the elephant in the room but because of how talented they were.
