Cult of Personality refers to political and cultural leaders who's charisma generates wild, blind devotion from the masses. Those who follow them (the cultists) do so without any regard to the truth behind the public face. These types of leaders are incredibly dangerous because they wield a staggering amount of power through easily manipulated minions. The Cult of Personality has never been as strong and as pervasive as it is today in western society.

This song is unbelievably good, deep, and still relevant. Living Colour was/is a fantastic band. So glad you're reacting to this great classic.

Vernon is such an underrated player.

A "cult of personality" is when a person is promoted as great and/or becomes even bigger than a movement they're in or behind. Sometimes this happens deliberately, as with Stalin. Sometimes it's the result of the power of their personality. This song is so well-written. I thought the most striking moment in the video is when it showed MLK and the lyric said "When a leader speaks, that leader dies."

Living Colour, to this day, is still one of my favorite rock bands of all time. This came out in 1988-89, when most of rock was still dominated by hair metal bands. They had a couple other minor hits, but this was definitely the biggest. HOWEVER, their first two albums especially, are INCREDIBLE! The first album you can listen all the way through-their are no filler songs. I strongly recommend Desperate People, Which Way to America?, and Funny Vibe. You really can't miss on any song on the first two albums!

Open letter to a Landlord is another good one by them

Beyond an overall incredible song musically and lyrically, that guitar solo is seriously underrated. It is both shredding and melodically fits within the rhythm section behind it. Plus, that shift into a riff near the end of the solo is, as one of the ICP guys once said, "pure mothaf&$#in MAGIC!"

Agree, absolutely. Vernon Reid's guitar work here is off the charts awesome. It's like Free-Jazz meets Heavy Metal.

Cory was in the movie platoon I believe and I've heard he is the nephew of Danny Glover the actor🤔🤔

The current bassist, Doug Wimbish played bass on the early rap albums like the one from the Sugar Hill Gang.

You can listen to that riff all day long? I've been listening to it for over 30 years. It never gets old.

Living Colour got noticed by some small band "Rolling Stones" :P .. Mick heard them and loved their sound, and made sure they got some promotion

Glamor boys was also big on this release. Living Color was probably the first rock group I liked as a kid. My parents were into reggae and I was into stuff like prince and public enemy. I wrote this group fan mail when I was 7 I think.

The song is about how a dynamic personality can persuade people into actions either good or bad. Charisma is hypnotizing. Kennedy is juxtaposed to Mussolini to illustrate how a dynamic leader can inspire despite the message. Kennedy was the young leader that inspired hope in the US, and Mussolini was the Fascist leader of Italy who stood with Hitler in WWII. Both inspired because of their personalities. Cult like, if you will.

I remember when this song blasted onto the radio. Cory Glover was Judas in one cast for "Jesus Christ, Superstar." One of the most under appreciated bands in my opinion. The lyrics were so prescient, and even more appropriate today.

Saw this band in a bar in Lawrence, KS then open for the rolling stones.

I first heard this song on a floppy plastic record that accompanied an article in Guitar Player magazine. I dubbed it on cassettes and gave it to all of my friends (Yeah, I'm that old!) I just recently discovered you guys and I dig what you are doing! Keep rockin', brothers! Pastor Jim from Cali.

The TV show was "In Living Color" featuring comedy skits. Actually, it's not "Political", the gist is a Cult Of Personality can develop on the right and the left.

Check out Bad Brains. Another all black band who played hardcore punk in DC in the late 70s and 80s. They broke barriers and made some killer music.

Ran across this great choice and remember well when it was released. Heavy playing and the vocals were fire...love your reaction!!!

the band impressed Mick Jagger enough so that Jagger contributed to their debut album. They're also the first band I ever heard do a song about being "bi".

If not the best guitar solo from the 80s, it's damn near the top. However, Living Colour's best is Love Rears It's Ugly Head.
