What did Vikings actually look like and what was their genetic history?
Vikings are often portrayed as tall, strong and blonde, but how close to the truth is this? ”I have never seen people with a more perfect body build. They are like date palms and their skin is reddish," is how the Arabic author, Ibn Fadlan, described the Vikings.
What colour hair did Vikings have? Certain research has shown that the Vikings in West Scandinavia (i.e. Denmark) were mostly red-haired. However, in North Scandinavia, in the area around Stockholm, blonde hair was more common. A 2020 study however found that Viking frequently had children with people from other lands, and this led to many Vikings having dark hair as opposed to the blonde hair you would normally associate with Vikings.
It is thought that the faces of men and women in the Viking Age were more alike than they are today. The women’s faces were more masculine than women’s today, with prominent brow ridges. On the other hand, the Viking man’s appearance was more feminine than that of men today, with a less prominent jaw and brow ridges.
In fact, this similarity means that it’s difficult to determine the sex of a Viking skeleton from the skull alone, and other markers need to be used, like pelvis width for instance. Beards were common for Viking men, and men’s hair was usually long, around shoulder-length, with slaves being the main ones with short hair.
How tall were the Vikings? This is a simple question, but the answer is annoyingly complicated. The average height of a Viking is estimated to have been somewhere between 172-175 cm tall (5.6-5.7 ft), and a woman had an average height of 158 cm (5,1 ft), with access to nutrition being a key feature in this. Although finding an authoritative figure on this proved tricky. For the figures I’ve seen, this doesn’t seem particularly taller than other Europeans. Although slightly late in the Viking period, Englishmen are thought to have been on average around 1.72 m in the 11 century.

What is ignored in this genetic researches is actually culture for if people cremated they deceised family members or have but them on a ship or bought or such then there are no genetic matterial left from such people and the people whose bodies are find would have not necessarily be the bodies of core Norse but actually same slaves or servants. This issue appears all over the world from Rome to India where Buddhist and Zoroastrians have feed they deceised family members bodies to animals on mountains of dead meaning they left no genetic materials and being a dominant religions in the past it is a huge thing when trying to make such a bold claims based purely on the genetic material found of thousands or less people throughout the ages.

I like that this is a summary without the names of specific genes nor elements of DNA. A bit more specificity would be welcome, but naetheless 'tis good as is, for me. Elsewhere I heard that Viking males averaged 5'8" in height, and that that was considered to have been tall. Kings were reported to have been a head taller than the subject population in many lands. Scythians and Cymbri were descendants of the escaped buffer nation southwest of Assyria, which had erst been the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Thus the reports of Saul and David being a head taller than the bulk of the population is in sequence with the same reports of Viking (Gothic/Scythian and Cymbric/Kimmeroi) kings. Gather on Me! You called yourself "Celtic". Irish -- and this would include Scottish Dalriadic -- red-haired DNA has lately been found to have been same as Egyptian pharaohs' mummies. One tale places princely exiles in Spain and the Irish tale populates Ireland from Spain, so there are your dots to be connected. Eastern Scotland and around Moray is Flemish, from soldiers brought in by a king. Border Scots are Anglo Saxon Niederlandisch, and Frisian, because English are Frisian and Nederlandish. Gather on Me! Many decades ago I served in Europe with the Nordic battalions. One thing I noticed right off, most of the Nordic guys and gals, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, were pretty darn tall and large. Even many of the girls were hovering at 6 foot, attractive too! They seemed larger than the rest of us. Which were UK, US, and Russian forces. Now not all of Nordic soldiers fit that mold. Some of them were brown haired and eyed and of normal stature. But it seems like they had a larger number of 6’4+ huge guys overall. I’m 6ft and I felt short. Then again go to the Netherlands and there are some freakishly tall people there too! My 2 cents for the modern age.

Statistically that’s true, with Dutch having the tallest avg height in Europe I read - 6’2” for men. Denmark is close to that. I think the Netherlanders are of Danish decent. The language is very similar - I can make out dutch based on my knowledge of Danish - they’re closer to each other than either language is to German. Culture measures, too, show they’re very similar while Germany is nearly polar opposite.

As a 6'1ft (average is around 6ft for men) well travelled Norwegian (Done all continents) I can tell you I've always been taller than the vast majority of the people I cross paths with except for one time. Most of the Maasai tribe people seemed to be around 6'2-6'3ft.

I am Swedish, Norwegian & Dutch. My Grandfather always told me that we "...HAVE ENOUGH DUTCH FOR FLAVOR...."! I was never quite sure what that was supposed to mean when I was a child but as I grew up I took it to mean that nobody quite knew how they should 'take' us, they never quite had any of us 'figured out'! All of the women in my family stand at 5'11" - 6'2". All of the men stand at 6'1' - 6'8" & built like "BRICK SHIP YARDS" was the common family reference when describing how all the males were built. Another thing I heard just as often when describing the girls & women was "....I'D BE VERY CAREFUL TO *NOT* GET ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HER...." in addition to comments about how savage 'a momma bear is if you're dumb enough to try to cross her!' & "... DON'T WORRY ABOUT *HIM*, IT'S *HER* YOU'VE GOT TO WORRY ABOUT...!" In a family reunion photo of nearly 200 of us, there were a few with darker hair but nearly every one else is blonde hair, bright blue to deep blue eyes, there are a few with green eyes & a handful with red hair, an even smaller handful with light brown hair! All of us are in the area of 6' - 6'5" there were a few over 6'5", I know that one of them, my Grandfather's youngest brother's son who stands 6'8" & used to play football for the USC TROJANS when he was in school at USC! We made the 'TALL ONES' stand in the back for the photo, LOL! I, myself, am blonde haired, blue eyed, first born of 6 children, one has darker blonde hair & one has greenish-blue eyes, the rest of us - all blonde & blue. I have 2 cousins, from my uncle's 6 children, (my father's brother) who have redish blonde hair, 2 have blonde hair & 2 have light brown hair. The brown haired 2 have green eyes, the other 4 all have blue eyes. Our last name in OLD NORSE means "HOLY OAK", this additional bit of family history has been handed down through our family - "...AS IN - 'THOR'S HOLY OAK'..." We have always understood what that means to us! Our family history has been carefully charted throughout & shown to go to the early 1500AD at a historical location where we pick up again in another historical location going all the way back to..... Saving this for Family privacy & we have traced our very first 'modern' family members to boarding a ship headed for America in the mid 1600's landing in Long Island, NY. From there going west to settle in what is now Minnesota & there is even a town there bearing our last name! The same is recorded with our last name where that ship landed in Long Island!

@@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 - Nope but from Veneto technically but ultimately Romagna. The Tarabini (later Tarabini-Castellani) are known to emerge to history in Ferrara, maybe Comacchio specifically, and serve as knights the Dukes of Ferrara and later Modena, mingling most notably (to my knowledged at least) with the Ponciani of Rome (Papal Guard commander married to Santa Francesca Romana and, generations later, the Italian Chess opening for fame). After Italian unification they migrated to Veneto with their already Austrianized overlords, they never had the guts to cross the Alps, they were Italian after all. So not Tuscany but definitely almost every land around it was involved in the making of my grandpa. I think it's just Indoeuropean legacy, which can be rather attributed to various waves from Italics to HRE Germans, all arriving from beyond the Alps and surely carrying some degree of Uralic ancestry all the way to Yamnaya and Khvalynsk cultures. In other cases I know from Spain, it's probably Native American admixture rather, they're not blond however, rather the opposite.

I have a small amount of DNA from Norway and France. A distant ancestor went as a knight to England with William Of Normandy. The Vikings went to Paris, married and ruled. The Normans were said to be the partial descendants of the 'North' men.

Interesting stuff. I'm an American and the majority of my ancestry is Dane. But i did a 23&Me test there was no surprise on my percentages it was mostly Scandinavian and German. However it also gave me my paternal haplo group which is R--L21 when I researched this it's highest concentration is found in Ireland and Scotland. So my guess is that my paternal ancestor was enslaved or adopted by Vikings and ended up in Denmark.

Thanks for this! Beautiful area - can’t wait to visit Scotland one day. My mothers Danish, all my cousins are there in Jutland. My DNA shows my Danish heritage is based in Copenhagen, Jutland, and there’s a big chunk of Scottish as well. We’re all taller than the historical findings, with the women 5’5”-5’11”, and the men 5’10-6’2”. But i expect everyone has gotten taller thanks to more food. Blond predominates, but in-laws brought in dark brown hair and eyes. My cousin Søren looks like a Viking poster boy with white blond hair, ice blue eyes, and sharp features. Folks in Yorkshire look a lot like my uncles. The idioms in York also translate fairly neatly into Danish idioms, suggesting some influence way back when.

You must remember, in Scandinavia arable land was scarce. For centuries they were fighting amongst them selves over access to land? Thats a form of positive genetics, in that the weaker types are removed, and the stronger more fearsome and robust pass on their genes. The weak are thus weeded out. Add to that, these people passed on land to the strongest most capable son, not the oldest? Hence the best had the land to attract a women, and pass on his better genes. This is how over thousands of years they became bigger, and developed a martial way of life. It became a Warriors society. They are still taller and fairer then us. In 2006 me and my mate were on Holiday in Tenerife. In a complex that was all Scandinavian people. Im 6ft tall, and most the women were my height. Most the men were well over 6ft 3. Some looked about 6ft 8. Most the wee kids i saw had platinum hair. Fine people. Good natured i liked them. The women were very attractive.

what the new dna study also found is the amount of blond among Vikings are the same as among Scandinavians today, there have never been a Scandinavia where everybody is blond of red haired , they also found that 97% of the remains were Scandinavian or part Scandinavian mixed with Brits, Baltics or more east a few findings from Southern Europe French/Italian , most tests were done in the areas where there was lots of trade and in Denmark where the land is connected to the rest of Europe further out in the country the result would have been a bit different and certainly in Norway it would have been much different but only a few tests are from Norway, I'm not convinced people like women looked much different than today because the dna of Danes today are pretty much the same as before the Viking age back to before Anglo-Saxons invaded Britain, but I'm not an expert, I do however know Scandinavians were taller in earlier times because the Scandinavian hunter gatherer was very tall as tall as the average Dane today about 6 feet when other Europeans were 5,2 feet illness and poor food made people shorter both in Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, this happened to more dense populated areas in Europe before it happened in Scandinavia where people tended to live more spread out

They said the same of ancient Celts, they also said they loved to bleach their hair. 🤣 Statistically speaking the fairest of them all are the Frisians, which are not really Norse ("Vikings") although close enough maye. Unless you are into another variant of extreme paleness, which is red hair (and associated skin color, also ruddy but still quite pale in general), and then it is the Scots who win at the most carrot-like. My paternal (Y) haplogroup is M222, it is suspected to have first arose in north-western Gaul, then became established in Devon, then, spread to North Western Ireland and southern Scotland (it is nowadays considered a typical Irish haplogroup), it seems to me a likely explanation being that my paternal ancestors did not want to pay Roman taxes and kept retreating from their advance. My maternal haplogroup has been a surprise (U5b2a1a1a), my genetic matches (living today) with common ancestors about 900 to 1000 years ago are found in Southern Sweden, and, from around 1200 years ago from Finland and Latvia. So my maternal line moved from the eastern Baltic to Sweden (during the early Viking age) then from Sweden to Britain as a part of the migration of Scandinavians to Britain during the later Viking age.

My Grandfather was a Stout and his wife a Campbell. My other side is more scot irish as I am American. I was curious about my darker features I've seen other scots especially Campbell with Darker features. On a world dna calculator it says I'm 86 Scottish and rest assyrian I was shocked. No idea is this left over dna from before the celts or from picts.

7:18 Whether one refers to or themselves as Anglo-Saxon or Viking, both are kind of a misnomer. I have never read anywhere that peoples from saxony were prominent in the so-called invasion of England. Jutes, Angles, Danes along with the frisians were however. Saxon only seems relevant to the creation of a royal line separate from the Danes. What sets them apart is their inescapable connection from their inception to the pope and Vatican. Same with the Franks. I have nothing against Saxons or Franks. It just is.🔥

While massive tall men among the Vikings, was no doubt rare, they weren’t non existent. Ivar in the annals was said to be 6 foot at 13 years old, and he was still growing, it’s believed by at least one archaeologist that his skeleton was found in England and it was 8 foot 6 inches tall, if this was really Ivar son of Ragnar he was most likely truly Ivar the feared, if it’s not him, that would mean there was a few unusually tall warriors.

My surname is from one of the oldest families of Galloway possibly Irish originally, but genetically I am more Scandinavian. My thought is that there is a light red skinned race from northern Europe I being one. Blue eyes by the way. As an old guy my hair went from blonde to red to blonde to grayish blond. I am American and when applying to transfer a concealed weapons permit I asked the Sheriff’s Deputy what hair color I should use gray or blonde and she replied blonde.

Some Norwegians have some similarities to the Western Irish, the fatter rounder nosed big blocky headed with small eyes and curly brown or red hair- Called Brunn types or Paleo Atlantids. These are the Fir Bolg in Irish mythology and likely come from Paleolithic survivors from the ice age Irish settlers who'd later be invaded by thinner faced and blonde haired gauls- reflected as the Tutha de dannen in Irish mythology. You'll also find Borreby phenotypes in Ireland with North Atlantids and Keltic Nordids. Atleast that's my two sense research.
