We are determined to discover traces of life on remote exoplanets, so we cast our gaze far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System and into the great abyss of space. But actually just several hundred years ago a unique world was detected comparatively close to us. There are clouds in its atmosphere, it rains there and on its surface great rivers flow into lakes and seas. Still, the conditions on this fascinating celestial body are lethal, with the surface bound by incredible cold. So what is really happening on Titan?

    Sorry to nitpick, but the views of Saturn in the sky are not possible, because a) Titan's orbital inclination is 0.3 degrees, meaning the rings would be pretty much edge-on all the time and b) Titan's atmospheric soup is so thick, you would probably not be able to see the Sun, let alone Saturn, ever.

  • @jasontoddman7265

    @jasontoddman7265

    All fossil fuels are made from hydrocarbons. However, not all hydrocarbons come from fossil fuels. You can have ethane and methane come from non-biological sources. Just as diamonds (pure carbon) are not necessarily formed from such fossil fuels either. Therefore, there are probably no sub-zero dinosaurs responsible for forming those hydrocarbon lakes on Titan. But wouldn't it be cool if we found some anyway? 😁

I think the distinction is significant in this context.

    What isn't happening on Titan is Saturn at this very cinematic angle in the sky like in the intro. I don't mind. :) Maybe a few more "maybe's" or "we think" or "our current leading theory is" would be good. Declaring the interior layout as a fact is a bit too soon.

    Unfortunately it doesn't look like this IRL. 1. You can't see Saturn through Titan's thick atmosphere 2. If you could, you'd barely see the rings because Titan 's orbit is nearly edge-on with them.
