What Did Jesus Write in the Sand?

Jesus' encounter with the woman caught in adultery includes the account of him writing in the sand. Why did he do this? What did he write? This has been a topic of much speculation for nearly 2000 years.

As a uneducated human and a simpleton, in humility I share a thought of Wisdom all Glory to God. May lips right now with my tongue be sealed in Jesus precious Blood. I too while at 3:40 am was reading and looking for a piece about the Blessed Mother, when by Devine guidance landed on this same piece of scripture. I was totally drawn about His Finger and I asked in Prayer for God to share why His Finger? Then Heavens dew fell upon me and I was learning, He is God Presence and He knows the Law for He Wrote the Law and He Created them from Dirt and Dirt shall they return. I wept with Praise and Glory to the Father. I then asked my Spiritual director and he said this was Valid. God can teach the humble as well. All Glory to the King

I really like this presentation. I have my own exegesis that is closely related to the one advanced by St. Augustine and St. Ambrose that you cover. * I think that the story is about more than just the woman taken in adultery. In Catholic Bible study I have been told that the Woman at the Well is a type of the Lost Tribes of the Northern Kingdom. The five husbands are five civilizations imported into the Northern Kingdom to destroy the cultural and religious identity of the Northern Tribes, which was successful. The Northern Tribes went into exile and never returned. * The relationship between God and Israel is said to be spousal. In worshiping false idols Israel was committing spiritual adultery, in violation of the Mt. Sinai Covenant. That is why the prophet Hosea married a harlot, to show Israel what they were doing to God. * Only the woman was brought before Christ. Her paramour was not brought along with her. The lack of a paramour can be explained because the false idols that Israel worshiped were not real gods. You can see this clearly in Psalm 115. Christ came to redeem Israel the harlot from all her iniquity. To me the woman taken in adultery is the type of Israel the harlot. In some translations it is said that the elders were the first to leave. When Christ was writing on the ground, I wonder if He wrote some choice verses from Hosea and Jeremiah about Israel’s harlotry with false idols?

I've always wondered about this. But I think it was a great human response to having to deal with hypocrites. Think of the scene. The Pharisees come scurrying over to Jesus, eager trip up this pretender. Rather than firing back at them, he deliberately slows down the encounter, making them wait on him. Jesus bends down and starts writing. But they continue to ask him. We can imagine him finally slowly getting up and rubbing the dirt off his hands, and calmly responding, "OK, here's the thing..." Then he bent down and continued writing, while they stood there, gaping at each other, and trying to figure how to respond. How much more effective were his simple words than if he had given them a speech. I really don't know if it matters what he was writing.

@Nathan Wilson these mobs or companion clusters do not act in unison even if they do, it does not last long. Hypnotist often used a technique to fixate a person or persons on certain action to sedate or calm person/persons.In the case of Our Lord here, it had to be perfectly executed and he did that, any wrong word or tone and it was all over.and then again Our Lord could calm the storm, had control over the physical laws. He was God himself, I hope you don't doubt that...

  • @peterFGoa3798

@Nathan Wilson i wish you had better comprehension skills, no way did i suggest Our Lord mass hypnotized them. In fact, He was accused by the Pharisee of sorcery and that His powers were from Demons and Our Lord had classic response " If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?" I was very clear He was God Himself , who could calm the storms and control over natural physical laws, so to calm and disperse the lynch mob should not be beyond our Lord.

My interpretation in this situation is that Jesus points his finger (twice) to the ground to remind the people that we are all dust, for we are molded by God from dust, which becomes our flesh, and the pleasures of the flesh brings us death, not only for this woman, but also them who are persecuting her. They too are slaves to the pleasures of the flesh, therefore also will die.

  • @ricricvinyl2401

    @ricricvinyl2401

@dom com. writing or pointing, Jesus' finger was touching the ground. One can scribble on the ground with nothing, which then can be interpreted as just pointing the finger to the ground with some motion. Anyway, no one for 2,000 years knows what he was writing about. The writer of the verse may just have presumed Jesus was writing something. but the ground where his finger was writing on (or pointing to) has proximity to the fact that we are made from dust, and dust we return. Jesus said the fruit of the flesh is death, and the crowd stoned the woman to die. So Jesus reminded them that you all will die too because you are from dust like her. Jesus is reminding the crowd that they also have their own desires of the flesh like the desire of this woman, therefore they have no right to judge. or condemn this woman.

@Niko Bellic I appreciate your conviction but your faith is only as good as what and who you put it in. Show me what you said in scripture and I will believe it. You must realize priests are tainted by the sin of Adam. We're saved by faith alone in Christ alone! Ephesians 2:8-9 Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness Genesis 15:6. No works. But what does the Roman Catholic Church do? they teach that you must keep the law in order to be saved and this is a false gospel. And since the RCC is seeking to be justified by law and Paul the Apostle says we are not to be justified by law Romans 3:28 Romans 4:5 Romans 5:1 also Galatians 5:3-4 therefore they can't be considered a true Christian church... because they violate the doctrine of justification by faith alone in Christ alone. RCC also says these are all( necessary) for salvation! The church, baptism, Penance, sacraments, Services of witnesses of the faith, keeping the Ten Commandments and detachments from riches equals it's a false gospel! That's why no true Christian Church should ever work hand-in-hand with the RCC least it inadvertently give Credence in value to the false gospel that it preaches... Question for you Nico ??? who are you following?? Jesus Christ God in flesh, the creator of all things in heaven and on Earth??? Or are you following man-made traditions? Please tell me where anywhere in the Holy Bible where it says we must worship and pray to Mary... that is a flat out adulterated heresy... was she a special woman? Absolutely yes ...can she hear all our prayers at all times in all places in all languages absolutely not, that's what the Roman Catholic church has brainwashed you into believing. May God give you ears to hear... what is it Prosper a man to gain the whole world but in the end lose their soul. Please don't follow Fallen men only follow the God breathed inspired words of God.

Although we can never know what Jesus wrote in the sand, the observation of Him doing so is important. It is an unusual detail to include and preserve in the account, and it thereby gives veracity to the entire passage. If the passage was a work of fiction, the author probably would also have made up what Jesus wrote, and included it. The Holy testaments are rife with such believable details. At this time of Easter, another comes immediately to mind - Jesus says to Pontius Pilate, "I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth." To which Pilate replies, philosophically, "What is truth?" It sounds like a real exchange, and I believe it was.

I think that the half of what JESUS wrote before the Pharisees arrived showed foreknowledge of the charges they brought. When HE resumed writing, they looked down and saw their actions were presupposed in what HE already had written. By this they realized that HIS finger wrote on the tablets of the divine law.

John Bergsma said he was showing he was God here, in that he was the one that wtote the law with the finger of God as it says in Exodus 31:18. I like this explanation because in the verse right before he writes with his finger, they ask about the Law of Moses, so his writing with his finger is a direct response.

I read somewhere that there is also a connection to Numbers 5 where there is the ritual to be performed when a woman is accused of adultery. It takes the anger and supposed 'justice' away from the man and the community and gives it to God who judges the woman personally. It involves writing by a priest. Jesus writes until it's only the woman and Him, revealing his role both as priest and God.

I think he was writing down a question in the sand! He was asking where is the second adulterer? Why is it only the woman that is the sinner? Where is the man? And because he already knew who the man was… That’s why everyone left because they already knew who the man was too!!! And they couldn’t judge both of them! It was only the woman that would’ve been stoned to death not very wealthy well known man!

It would be strange if the text did not tell us what Yeshua wrote with His finger, but it says: "But Jesus stooped down and with finger wrote on the ground, and when they continued asking him he lifted up himself and said unto them, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" and again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground." This is saying He wrote and said, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" and then He wrote it again. Repeating a statement or word is the standard Hebrew way to emphasize the point. Yeshua often said "verily verily I say unto you" which means "very much so very much so I say unto you". We who believe know that Christ's instructions are Law. To emphasize this He wrote it twice in Temple soil. What is noteworthy is that these men did not dare challenge Yeshua's claim to this authority. What the video says about no witnesses is very true. But, also, if adultery is caught in the act the man was also caught and according to Law they are both to be stoned. It is not Lawful to stone the one and not the other. Therefor it is noteworthy that Christ had an easy out at that moment, but instead He chose to boldly apply His authority in public and teach Truth. Much love. Christ be to all.

@Lameekia Oh, hey! I wrote that three years ago. So, now that I have better Greek-study skills, I double checked it. What I wrote holds up, except for what I said about "verily verily", which is simply "amen amen" and, technically, means "affirmative affirmative", but, more exactly, it simply means "amen amen". I see your icon states that you love yourself. If you want to live forever, you must deny yourself and take up your cross and follow the Lord Jesus. He has paid, in full, for your sins; now, if you will believe in His true Gospel, then you will pass from death to life and you will never die.

Could Jesus have also been amending the Mosaic law to include those without sin casting the first stone in such situations?(John8:7) The fact he writes with his finger in the earth could also have been an allusion to Exodus31:18 where God writes the commandments that he gave to Moses with his finger as well. Christ being God has the authority to amend that law(Matthew28:18). He writes twice, the first time seems to indicate that he wrote what he said to them. The second time he writes it could have been what some of the early church fathers suggested, an allusion to the the prophecy in Jeremiah. Possibly even a verbatim quote of Jeremiah17:13 so the scribes and Pharisees could see that the prophecy was in relation to them rejecting him.

Context: Writing something while some are accusing another of sin. Maybe a list? Where have we seen a list of sins before? And how were they written? By the hand or finger, as in Ps 144: "Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war", and Exodus 31:18, Exodus 32:16: The 10 commandments written by the hand/finger of God. Perhaps it was a examination of conscience for them, after which they realized their own sins.

it's my favorite story, but scholars have realized & accepted it was not part of the original text. It was a late addition to the text & not in any of our oldest manuscripts, just like the Wedding of Cana story. The question, then, is what did the interpolator mean by having Jesus writing in the sand? Jeremiah meant that the names of those written in sand would be forgotten -- it's a saying that came out of Egypt. It is NOT a fulfillment of "prophesy" as in a fortune teller's prediction of the future. That thinking is the Hellenistic pagan rewrite of the gospel. A Hebrew prophesy is more like what we'd call a warning about consequences if we don't change. Foretelling the future was absolutely forbidden, and only those who believe in fate, rather than free will, believe in determinative prophesy. So he would not have been trying to fulfill prophesy. The standard practice of the day was for a priest to write the accused's name in the sand before their "trial". All the names of those who were what we now call "on the docket". If it was so important, we wouldn't be left to guess on anything, so we must assume it would have been obvious to those originally told this story -- and given ancient practice of the time, the best guess is that he first wrote the adulteresses name, then started writing the names of her accusers when he bent down again -- a "judge not or we'll have to judge your too" kind of thing. The Bible is NOT a solitary, consistent work -- and people need to accept that. American Evangelism has made a false idol out of a collection of different texts written in different cultures & contexts across millennia, which are ARGUIING about theology. Each book disagrees with the next, and the readers job is the WORK OUT OUR OWN SALVATION. The Bible cannot be the "Word" mentioned in the Bible, because the BIble didn't exist while it was being written -- so please just stop with that. The LOGOS is LIVING -- not dried ink on a human-made scroll in a human language. Btw -- "WORD" isn't even the correct translation -- Logos means REASON, which uses language for its vehicle. Which means you have do your homework a LOT better. Or is your faith a matter of joining the RCC & then asking what you believe?
