Hi everyone, I hope you enjoy this episode where I try very hard to explain the main beliefs about Gnosticism, but it's hard because Gnosticism is complex, diverse, contested, and a little bit weird. But if you like it, check out the other videos in the series on: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mmuGwaeec5fTerg.html Defining the terms Gnostic and Gnosticism. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6SEqM2xn6yad6g.html 6 Things People Get Wrong About Gnosticism

First, awesome content & production. Yesterday in church (US Episcopal) we began our first Lenten episode of your Tom Wright / MF Bird series on the NT, and the room was so packed out that we are moving to the great hall for next week. We usually get 5 people for a study, so the hunger for content is real. Second, I appreciate this kind of survey because in the void of Michael Heiser’s absence from death, I miss getting fresh solid biblical content on “weird” stuff, like Gnosticism. So please keep it coming! Thank you.

Really helpful. Is it fair to call someone a gnostic today if they simply have some theology of salvation through special knowledge if they don't really bifurcate between a supreme deity and a rebellious demiurge?

Most religious have cognitive content, i.e., knowledge, eightfold path in Buddhism, doctrine in the Qu'ran, etc. So I tend to focus on Supreme deity (good) and demiurge (bad).

Interestingly, Gnosticism, Kaballah, and Alchemy have inspired a lot of Japanese content, namely the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series of games, and numerous anime. It is strange how those kinds of games, that directly draw on and reference Gnosticism (going so far as to name the final boss "Yaldabaoth") are so common over there, yet not in Europe and America. Sure, Michael Heiser liked to talk about how "Gnosticism is everywhere", pointing to movies like the Matrix and Prometheus, or Marvel gods even, but personally I think those are just parallels, not direct inspiration, like in that Japanese content. Why do you think that is that Japanese pop media has so many instances of Gnostic-Kaballistic-Alchemical inspiration, yet so few in Western pop media?

Your assumption that this is a strange idea of a cramped existence is highly biased and distracting.
