He's really bias in favour of gnostics for some reason! He is presenting ideas as facts, and imo, twisting reality into his narrative. Dismissing other Christian writers of the time as liars and deceivers is strange.

This intro is great! I'm used to seeing academic discussions online about Gnosticism assuming the theory that Gnostics didn't really exist and we need to drop the category altogether. It's good to finally see Brakke's work given the attention it deserves and presented to a popular audience! I take it that you don't follow Turner's theory that the Sethians eventually wandered away from Christianity, becoming more Platonic in the process?

When you say that "religions are internally diverse", there are members of religious groups that will disagree with that. Many Orthodox Jews in Israel don't consider Reform Judaism to be a legitimate form of Judaism. And many Jews don't consider people that blend Christianity with Judaism religiously Jewish.

Right. Bad for the business model. Par for the course the church has forgotten that being in touch with the Spirit can't fit into a cerebral style of understanding. This is why Jesus was so upset with the phariseeism of that day. The Spirit of God cannot be catagorized by the human intellect.

I have often heard the term 'Gnostic' thrown around in my adult life, and having been raised Christian, the incredibly little I thought I knew seemed too weird to be understood. Enter a band called Meshuggah, and one of my favourite songs by them is called 'Demiurge'. After hundreds of listens, I recently thought to do a bit of an exploration of what it might be referring to. I'm only sad that I didn't do it sooner. My mind is absolutely blown. Thank you for such coherent content for a true novice like myself to perhaps just begin to try and understand all of this. Truly excellent starting point.

Gnostics are clearly childish thinkers who arrogantly believe that if they were God they could have done a better job- their simplistic ideas about life feed this. It's a highly simplistic theoretical approach stemming from an arrogant assumption that they could do a better job at creation. They have no support in scripture, which is why they have to ignore it and invent ideas out of thin air. Considering that the gnostics end up supporting the serpent, kinda supports the notion that the Gnostics are an early branch of Luciferianism. They accept christ and the snake- and have probably sown the seeds of the Lucifarin cults that today see Jesus as Lucifer. I see nothing in their theology that deserves to be respected and ridicule they deserve. Adding stupidity to stupidity can add to the complexity doesnt do anything for the search for truth however, actually makes people more lost.

Bad comparison, the Vedic deities will be relegated as divinities sprung from The Abyss much of how Greco-Roman deities and Hindu Pantheon are often attributed by early Hindus as born from the bowels of Abyss or the primordial waters of Tehom, whereas Sethian texts akin to "On The Origin of The World" considers these Pagan worship of Primordial Abyss/Tehom as false Even the concept of Brahman comes after centuries if not millennias of development, on top of Buddhist rivals of the pivotal battles between concept of Hindu eternal Atman/Jivas and Buddhist Anatman/Shunyata in India, some of The Sethians and General Valentinian Theology also considers the concept of Psyche/Self as belong to second category of Yaldabaoth/Demiurge/Craftsman's belonging, akin to how Christian and Jews are belonging to repentant Sabaoth and his Retinues (resembling of Eternal Buddha of Lotus Sutra in terms of achieving enlightenment by countless Kalpas before creation of The World after he found Prajna and achieve Enlightenment in remote metaphysical realms or as Adi Buddha with his consort White Tara, much like Sabaoth gained Sophia's own daughter "Zoe" for accompanying Sabaoth to helps his missions to gather the "Psychics" so they can saved and became "Pneumatics") The Pneumatikois is considered to be superior to Psikhikoi/Psychics (belongings to Temples, Synagogues and Churches) and Hylics/Materialists (Pagans and Atheists, as even Platonists like Plotinus happens to criticise the Christian Sethians and Valentinians too), if anything the three categories resembles more of Islamic distinction of Mu'min/Believers, Ahl Kitabi/People of The Book and Kuffars/disbelievers/polytheists

True understanding implies information being transferred losslessly without any added noise. It simply doesn't occur in objective reality to any degree of true knowledge. The only information that can be understood is the fact that the universe exists and you are a viewpoint of it. Almost everything else is only made up categories made up by humans agreeing on certain logical axioms. Nirvana like experiences reflect on that one fact and the difference between objective reality and subjective reality. All else is inferred subjectively by the individual by experiencing existence itself and knowing it's an illusion greater than the ego and the one truth tells us we're the universe more than we are ourselves.

@@jonathanshepherd5515 You will find no argument about that. However, Constantine himself worshipped Sol Invictus and received some kind of "revelation" from the sun (according to him, apparently) which influenced his conversion to Christianity somehow. Let's keep in mind the fertility worship of rabbits and eggs, the fertility goddess Ishtar from Babylon (and several coastal mediterranean pagan religions) which all got incorporated into Easter. Or the ten day Winter Solstice celebration called Saturnalia, which showed appreciation for the end of the sun's cycle, the shortest day of the year, and end of the dreaded winter that ancient Europeans dealt with year to year for centuries. It was a holiday of drunken cheer and debauchery, and gift exchanging too. Santa Klaus is a later Germanic/Nordic addition, draped in his hellish red fur. Krampus also originates from that region. Fire worship (Yule logs), Evergreen and mistletoe worship (because they survive freezing weather), and ancient pagans in Northern Europe always worshipped reindeers (and bears). Syricans never had any experience with elves, reindeers, yule logs and mistletoes, painted eggs, or trick or treat practices. They never dressed up as demons parading through the the town asking for candy. It appears many of these traditions survived in SOME form through modern Christianity. I wonder who's responsible for that. My guess would be some kind of money making machine, which was highly organized and exclusive, and would probably need to have a good grip on the people (having some kind of claim over Rome perhaps? the largest and most prominent empire of the time, which was at it's peak and in a period of peace and stability, and were already starting to experience an influx of Germanic people by the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD). Just a thought.

The Gnostic Gospels are one of the most brilliant things i have read. The world would have been a very different place if their work had not been destroyed when the Romans decided on the scriptures in the bible. My favourite chapter is the secret book of James. Plus Sophia played such a big role and she was completely stripped from the bible. Obviously at the time they were trying to make men more divine by taking her out.

  • @realCharAznable

That's a bit of a modern Western take on it, and sounds a bit reductive. They included virtually nothing discussed here in the compilation of the Bible. It was hardly some random sexist vendetta against Sophia and womankind. Where in the Bible do you see the male sex being said to be "divine"? After all, Mary is essentially worshiped in the Catholic church and always has been. The vilification of Gnosticism probably came from many different motivations, the least of which not being that it wrests control from the governing church and makes "the kingdom of God is here and now" a reality. And further, if there is real truth in Gnosticism, all of these events perfectly make sense in a world made by Yaldaboath.

Having come from eastern esoteric tradition and simultaneously being well versed in many other traditions except the Semitic ones and so only having a rudimentary grasp of the Gnosis and Kabbalah and understanding them through the inner vision rather than in conceptual or scholarly fashion I appreciate your efforts to summarize and describe various traditions in a non-biased way so I can relate to the conceptual side of things. Henry's early insight feels like an epiphany. The oral traditions and, eventually, early scriptures did not have instructions; people were free to believe, interpret and choose the gospels as they deemed fit which would spur an overload of different, clashing ideologies.... It makes so much more sense now why there was such a violent outlash at heretics. Not because they challenged the status quo, but because they were direct threats to BE the status quo. Or, in other words, how the modern Catholic Christianity is, quite literally, theology as seen by the victors. The Sethians themselves, their origin story is absolutely trippy - some Azathoth level of weirdness really - but the explanation of the material world is WAY more sensical. It explains why the Old Testament God is so cruel, why our world is so imperfect and full of pain if God is so good, etc. I really liked it. Besides, having heard about the Book of Judas before, things become even clearer. The apostles worship Yaldabaoth, not the Unknown God.... Except Judas. Judas has the gnosis. It's awing. Jesus is not much different from the serpent, really. And I can DEFINITELY see why they were so violently fought - their views violently depart from a large portion of the Christian mythos. Absolutely amazing video.
