What Did Atreus' Dream Mean? (God of War Ragnarok)

Atreus' dream is one of the most intriguing and cryptic scenes in God of War Ragnarok. I'm diving deep to uncover this location's origins, creator and the allegory it represents...

Atreus and Odin, Loki and Odin are virtually the same person. Even in mythology some experts believed that Loki was just initially another portrayal of Odin In the poetic eddas, Odin just seems like an older wiser version of Loki. Which is why it’s not surprising that the developers made “Odin act more like Loki than Loki himself”. But that’s not true and looking at things from a surface level Loki/Atreus and Odin literally do the exact same things in ragnarok. Collecting prophecies to understand their place in the world and what they are meant to do ? Check Trying to infiltrate the enemies’ head quarter to try and garner information and spy on them in preparation for war? Check Trying to use the mask as a way to find easy answers and solve all their problems? Check In fact on his second trip to Asgard, atreus explains to angrboda that he want to use the mask “as a way to bring back their people”, instead of endorsing the responsibility and going on a what will be a veryyy hard and complicated trip to find them. Loki and Odin are literally the exact same person in ragnarok just at different stages in life. Odin has existential crisis about death because he is an old man whose death is approaching Atreus has an existential crisis about his purpose and the meaning of his life because he is a teenager. Loki is essentially just Odin as a teenager Throughout the entirety of ragnarok atreus and Odin have the same ideas, try to solve problems and plans ahead the same way The only difference is that Odin was actually effective at doing it while atreus was naive and foolish

The origins of Odin is the God of the Koryos, the divine leader of the Wild Hunt, and closely associated with wisdom and poetry; Loki, however, has all the characteristic of a Kali deity, then Demon of the End Times. Not the same God.

I think odin represents general krate(kratos before killing his family)as well in the sense of doing anything he wants for a selfish ultimate goal, for general krate it was power and for odin, it was knowledge. Both of these paths will lead to them killing their children, but this is where their core difference lies, whereas krate killing his family made him resort more to his humanity and quit this journey for a while to seek forgiveness, odin simply found it to be annoying and would continue to fight as if nothing happened. Just put odin in krates position for when he killed his family, if he did that, he would have then sacrificed his humanity fully to ares and try to conquer all of Olympus not for ares, but for himself, due to the fact odin wants to be in control of EVERYTHING. If he can’t have everything, he wants nothing. Which is why he refuses to accept Tre tres offer to live, as he would be under peoples thumbs and lose all of his powers and would only have his family left. Basically, odin is no human in his core. He’s a selfish dictator warrior/magic god with no humanity who would exploit anybody’s purpose so that it suits him.

Wait, wait, wait, before actually watching the video, i just remembered; I finished GOW 2018 again some time ago (again, after playing Ragnarok), and after opening the portal to Jotunheim to scatter the ashes, instead of going directly from the entrance of the portal into the realm just like in the other realms, there is a brief section, with some stairs you have to walk towards a white portal and if you look around there is glowing yellow sand everywhere! It is nothing important, but i love the consinstency. To go into Jotunheim, you have to go through Utangard, right? it's cool that this applies to GOW 2018 also and before actually reaching Jotunheim, Kratos and Atreus crossed through Utangard. Lovely little detail.

I think when Atreus destroyed the mask, he maybe lost the chance to revive the missing giants. Odin stole the mask from Ægir and when he looked at the rift through it, he lost eye? When Giant like Atreus would look at it maybe it would tell him the knowledge about Giants...

I think it’s partly from someone’s subconscious. It plays on their fears. Like in the mythological Utgard. The illusions there seemed to humiliate Loki and Thor but they were actually so strong that the Gods were doing things such as wrestling with time itself disguised as a old woman.

I always interpreted this as confirmation that it was indeed Loki at these precise moments in gow 2018 and not just a simple teenage crisis Loki has his dark moments where he is impulsive, irresponsible and insolent but also good sides This moment in Utangard is a warning so that he does not repeat his mistakes

Atreus is giant and in his dream he saw Thor's arrive in 2018's game, MAYBE this dream in Ragnarok might hint for Egypt, idk.

Hey super late but I love Atreus. Anyways, why hasn’t anyone talked about the fact there’s SAND everywhere ? Isn’t Sand a huge clue to the future? Sand bowls in GoW2018 are very important. I do believe this shows his future… in the sands. The 2 suns could also mean Ra and Horus ! 5:39 this part can equalize Atreus coming before Anubis as the Statue of the Stag looks very similar.
