Pop dies everyday. When a pop song is 2-3 weeks old, it dies. When metal song is 30 years old, people are still listening to it.

Yes.... But only at a certain age. Little kids should never ever be exsposed to metal. When I have kids I may put on like some maiden or priest but only when they are like at least 8 or 9 and even then, nothing remotely heavy until at least teenage.

That's like asking "what could kill jazz?". Nothing can. It's a since long established genre, not in need of renewal or evolvment. People will keep experimenting and try out new things, but not much will stick. It's not stagnation, it's a solid groundwork that will remain intact. The PC theory is just alarmism. PC culture will soon turn on itself, that's inevitable, and after it's hit rock bottom in ridicoulusness, the world will go back to normal.

Fascinating insights as usual BMW. 'Hair Metal' boy bands in the 80s (I'm 53) were single handedly responsible for turning me off metal completely. Then, only a couple of years ago, thanks largely to KZread, I discovered MDM, power metal, folk metal, symphonic metal etc and now I'm a metalhead and proud of it ! Metal will never die as long as the artists are serious about what they do and don't let commercialism and gimmickry become more important than the art that they are creating. Kudos to you.

genres of music don't try to kill other genres of music. I'm pretty sure no glam, grunge, rap, or pop artist ever once thought, "this music is sure to put a stop to heavy metal once and for all!" Politicians and overly religious parents tried to kill metal and failed but other genres of music have not made any such attempt.

Love that you mentioned the most important thing in metal: darkness. People outside the metal think it's just heaviness. But darkness is the number 1 what attracts me to metal. Darkness and only then power. That's why I am picky even among metal music. You can blast epic masterpiece of Epica or Nightwish yet it won't sound as beautiful as Swallow the Sun or Trees of Eternity.

Oh man! I can recall having the fear of "what if metal dies one day?" many years ago! I was a huge metal fan from 1987-2006. I still like it, just not quite as much as I did during that time span.Well, I should say, I just don't listen to it like I did. I don't know what happened, because I swore that I would always be a metal head. I just got old, I guess, sigh....But, I am happy to see that it has lived on and is just as strong as ever. Metal fans will come and go, but metal will never die.

heavy metal will certainly never actually die, but my theory is heavy metal will be opressed for a while in the near future, then its gonna bounce back even stronger than before. then i think theres gonna be a whole new movement of metal we havent reached yet. and int the mean time, there might be a surge of other genres like rap, taking alot of influence and spirit of heavy metal, furthering the spirit of metal into new areas and infecting other genres

So I don't believe heavy metal can die at this point, first about the record labels, probably better off without them if you want money, in general terms, record labels screw over artists and that's about it, I agree with Glen Fricker, with the internet you have so many ways to get your music out there that there will always be metal bands, and don't forget a lot of metal bands also do have normal jobs, even if all the money goes then there will still be people there for the love of metal, metal is so powerful because of it's dedicated fanbase, it doesn't have to get on it's knees and suck off the mainstream audience to stay alive. I don't think metal will collapse on itself like hair metal, the core (aka important) metal audience seems to hate "sellouts" and it's obvious if a band is just doing it for a trend, trends will die, true good metal wont. I really hope that government censorship doesn't affect metal, this whole sjw BS really grinds my gears, and honestly, if metal is ever illegal due to being offensive, i'll either kill myself or live in isolation, I think they might reconsider if a group of metalhead martyrs all collectively kill themselves in protest of censorship, for the metal I shall die! haha!

Trickster I actually saw something on Reddit the other day that hits on what you are saying. It looked at countries and their favorite types of music genres, along with the loyalty of the fans of that genre. Metal was in the top 5 of almost all of them. Lots of weird genres I've never heard of before were on the lists too, but metal was always there.

something that we need to clarify before discussing this is what we mean by "Heavy Metal". Are we talking about the music itself or as a movement and lifestyle (etc.)? Based on this video i'd assume that we are talking musicaly. Most music today is in some ways very shallow and not very genuine, however Metal is one of the most genuine genres and styles of all time. So no i don't think it will ever die, you made some very valid points throughout the video though. If we talk about it as a community and "lifestyle" i'd be as pessimistic to say that it is kind of dead allready today unfortunately. The biggest issue here is from within Metal and not from the outside. The debates on who is a "poser", what is "trve" and what "real music" is, is all parts of the issue. Metalheads today seem to spend more time focusing on differences between each other and who is the better Metalhead, when we should focus on what we have in common and have a great time.

I think we've seen our next generation of headliners. Sabaton replaces Maiden, Striker replaces King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. Municipal Waste, Power Trip, Warbringer, and Havok are the new big 4. Amon Amarth is going to be the top Death Metal headliner, Behemoth for Black Metal, Lamb of God for groove metal, ect. We have to replace the original headliners with the new bands, prepare for retirements, ect.

If all the legendary bands from the 80's will end their careers and if all the legendary musicians from the 'Golden Age of Metal' will die some day, this could become a problem at least for the big festivals. I'm not sure if the bands from the 90's and 2000's are able to replace these legends. I can't see any bands who can replace Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Judas Priest, Slayer and Metallica.

Hmmm, I don't think that Metal would ever die - but it could easily go the way of jazz, blues, etc many young people ..look at a lot of classic rock as dad rock.. I do think that rock/metal framework/idiom could potentially exhaust itself, fizzle out and become even more niche. If you look at the state of rock music in the last 20 years, there has not been tons of innovation, rock has been constantly recycllng ideas since alt and indie rock came about, its also lost appeal amongst youth. Vans warped tour is finished, many of the prominent acts that (that innovated the genre) play stadiums - ie. Iron Maiden, JUdas Priest, Metallica, Slayer, etc are getting old/retiring. There are not many modern metal bands that have such a mass following. Hip- Hop is the music of youth and rebellion these days (there's actually a lot of really good, socially conscious hip hop and being a metal elitist who shuns other genres is close minded) - Rap sells, but it also innovates, and represents a large portion of the population who want change, visibility and representation. Hip Hop is also easier to produce, and you don't need a full band with equipment/instruments to make good music. Bands these days rely on tour money and merch sales to make revenue, albums are pirated, physical copies sell less (CD's maybe not vinyl) - if metal is stagnating, if the audiences for metal are becoming smaller and smaller, they won't be making money and its going to be harder to tour. Metal still remains very popular in Europe, but in North America, as I've mentioned, the averrage age of metal heads is increasing, and less and less youth are interested in it as an artform, and their are so many "revival'" clone bands that do nothing to further the genre - when music stops innovating, it dies. If people want dark angry music their are so many other options these days - noise, power violence, socially conscious hip hop like kendrick lamar, all kinds of abracive electronic, music, etc. I think a lot of people are changing socially,. too, and find the metal community can actually be a bit regressive, racist, homophobic and a boys club, where women still sometimes face misogyny or just bullshit (that makes it hard to fit in). As social attitudes change music lyricism needs to be able to evolve - not necessarily in lock step with one certain set of politics... but be aware, and maybe tackle new issues, like issues and shit women face. I'd love to see a band write songs about the hardshipsof being gay or trans - how people get bullied and murdered, etc. As a gay metal head I've observed intolerance with in the community first hand, now I don't want any kind of censorship, people can write songs about whatever they want - but its the bands views outside of songwriting that can get them in trouble. Anyways all this shit said, I think Metal will continue along its current trajectory and become more and more a niche genre, with many subgenres, but over time it probably lose a lot of its broader appeal.

Shawn Smith not going to lie... You did put a tear in my face. The entire time i thought that the reason why metal was going down was because the sound was getting too progressive for the every day listener (all though it is the infrastructure of the genre). I was wrong, i realized that ideologically it is a bit regressive after reading your input. I used to be a bit misogynist and homophobic when i was very young so im no saint to any of this, now some of my best freinds are gay, bi, & lesbian. I did have a taste of bullying in middle school ,for defending my cousin who is gay, by being called the F word and being shown gay pornography. I guess it was karma, not only for being a cunt but for leaving my cousin behind. Ever since, ive opened my eyes and detested social injustices. The funny thing is that it wasn't that long ago either im still 18 yrs old and am aspiring to create a band with my brother. I myself always think about these issues and their always argued in social media. Im always there helping defend women, lgbtq, and non whites out there. With always keeping this saying in my head: there will always be an opinion to another's opinion. I cant shake the feeling but to think that i probably needed to read this for another reason. I honestly do feel like i can make more lyrics off this thought. Maybe i should write about this shit people go through just bc they didn't fot the standards of the assholes who believe they are running this dump

Funny thing, I have handful of CDs from Nuclear Blast but none from Metal Blade. Maybe I should get a Cattle Decap or Cannibal Corpse, BTBAM or Dragonforce CD from Metal Blade at some point. Or all three even to help with the Nuclear Blast equilibrium (one power metal (Nightwish - Vehicle of Spirit), one extreme metal (Enslaved - E) and one progressive metal (Meshuggah - Violent Sleep of Reason). Now if Metal Blade has any prog rock bands the equilibrium would be complete since I also own Opeth - Sorceress, pretty good album by the way. A little bit darker than the previous two.

There were many groups of heavy metal fans meeting spontaneously and being friends. Many. I don’t see that anymore since a long long time. But I am very happy to see there still are young metal heads. That’s how it’s supposed to be. Older people become tired of fighting. Young metal heads like you are necessary for it’s existence and what we stand for. I hope you can create other accolades. Heavy metal must live forever 🤘💪⚔️⚔️🛡

nah. it might change but it will never die. i am pretty sure its a fundemental urge for some portion of the human population to seek out something darker, more intense and more complex than th music that appeals to most people. remember that most of the bands that got established once managed without a record label. so at least as far as money allows them, they will keep making music.

I'm not worried about metal dying because it won't. I am however afraid that metal with eventually hit a plateau, where in terms of sound everything will have been done and no one pushes metal into new directions. I know there's bands out there that are experimenting with different sounds, a great example is Imperial Triumphant. I think industrial metal can be pushed to higher levels than what say Fear Factory has already done. Drone and djent guitar playing styles metal is sorta in that direction, but it's still in it's infancy. There hasn't been a band yet that has assembled all the pieces yet to create a new definitive sound in that sort of field. I hope you guys can understand the potential, it's difficult to explain.
