What Could Have Been - The Patrik Laine Story

Спорт

    Always wondered what happened in Winnipeg that Laine wanted out. Was listening to a sports radio show, just last week actually, and what someone that knows said that away from the rink Laine was most happy staying in and playing video games. Apparently, Wheeler & Schiefelie were always on Patrik's case about hanging with them during down time. I mean, if that's the case and your teammate is a talent like Laine, leave him alone & let him be happy so he's recharged for games. A happy Laine will fill the opposition net & make you happy.

    I have some insight on the situation that leads me to believe that the biggest losers here will be Mark Scheifele and Cam Atkinson. I remember from last year that Tortorella wasn't fired or released, his contract was up and he didn't want to sign another one. In fact he felt that his message had grown stale going into the pandemic break. So the big thing was Tortorella didn't want to be coach the year Columbus got Laine. Torts had tried to step down from his job after the bubble playoffs, set on retirement. However Nick Foligno, Cam Atkinson, and Seth Jones conspired together to coerce and basically guilt trip Tortorella into returning for the last year of his contract. Those three were Tortorella's biggest supporters in the locker room, and Jones and Atkinson wielded a lot of power through Tortorella. Similar to Scheifele and Wheeler and their dynamic with Paul Maurice. There's whispers that Dubois's issues weren't with Tortorella specifically, but with the leadership. Especially Atkinson and Jones. During the lead up to the trade, Atkinson gave false information to major insiders saying that Dubois was just "selfish" and wanted to be a star in "a big market." After the trade, Atkinson took a near instant dislike to Laine and often made up reasons to the media why Laine was at odds with Tortorella, often leaning into the "lazy Laine" talk. Many of his claims were inadvertently countered by Tortorella who was often perplexed where the media got these narratives, not realizing they came from one of his favourite players. There are some archived reddit posts from around that time where some Blue Jackets fans claim that Atkinson was telling people in public that management was looking to trade Laine. From this, some infer that Atkinson fed the same rumours to insiders, just like he did with Dubois. After Foligno was traded, nobody on the team was able to stop Tortorella from leaving. This led to Seth Jones' sudden reversal of an earlier claim that he wanted to sign long term in Columbus, and his new declaration that he wanted to go elsewhere. With most of the leadership gone, Atkinson made statements to fans in public where he suggested he would be the next captain. However Atkinson had lost all of his allies, and management unceremoniously flipped him to the Flyers for Voracek (who is now a close friend of Laine's). While initially shocking, those in the know have let slip that Atkinson's trade was the result of him being a leak in the locker room, trying to consolidate power, and being toxic to some of his teammates. He notoriously didn't attend Matiss Kivlenieks funeral, doesn't want to talk about his trade, and Columbus has already reassigned his number to a rookie. I see many similarities between what happened to Atkinson and what's happening to Scheifele now. If Scheifele faces a similar fate to Atkinson this summer, it will be a strange mirror for Laine and Dubois. Where the former 2nd and 3rd picks from 2016 were not able to defeat toxic power structures on their original teams, the trade has forced the two front offices to confront problems with the leadership that could no longer be ignored.

  • @randallanderson1632

    @randallanderson1632

    2 жыл бұрын

    I am a Blue Jacket fan in Columbus. I do not know where you got your insight, but Torts was gone after his final year because the Jackets had a terrible season and Torts had not only lost the locker room, but he could not adapt his coaching style to a team with different talents. I never heard Seth Jones state that he wanted to stay in Columbus. All top-level Jacket players, and really, _all_ top-level NHL players have never had any interest in playing in Columbus. In fact, the Jackets president, John Davidson, tried to get out. The same thing is true with Columbus lookalikes, Buffalo and Ottawa. These are not "preferred franchises" in the eyes of NHL players. If Laine stays healthy and has two or three really productive seasons of 30+ goals, we'll see if he wants to stay in Columbus. My guess is that Carolina, New York or Vegas will suddenly beckon and despite Columbus actually offering more money, he will pack his bags.

    You should do more of these for players across the league. Their arent many people summing up players' careers in this fashion on youtube. I know your channel is based on the Jets but these kinds of videos could gain a bit of traction if you appeal to wider bases. The editing is good, the backstory and scrip are good and the clips along with the statistics are good too. If you're able to, would be cool to see more of these. Maybe a bit more of a what could have been outlook. Maybe a look into his production in Columbus, how he could have worked on the first line, contract situations, and personal opinions on the future if he stayed, how the outlook on their playoff picture might have looked if he was still there, etc... The summary is nice, but add a bit to it. Perhaps the "What happened to....." series? "What could have been...." and ect... As a Sens fan, I've always wondered what could have been for the Stones, Hoffman, Karlsson teams, and stuff? Whether you do or not, this video was great. Appreciate the effort. I do think youve got a nice little hole in the NHL KZread market to fill, if you wanted obviously.

He was scoring like the way Matthews is scoring now....1 goal per game pace and looked like he could put up 70 goals a year. Then something strange happened. I don't know if it was the concussion when he got laid out by Jake McCabe in Buffalo, or another injury....but something happened where it's like his mind changed...his game slowed down, his thinking became foggy, all his decisions were bad, and he couldn't even score anymore. He's still young and he could find his game back and put up 50 a year for the next 10 years, but just recalling what he was like in the beginning....that dude was the scariest goal scorer the NHL had seen. I think a good story can also be made for Jesse Puljujarvi (I thought he was going to be just as good or even better) and Alexander Nylander....how the hell did not become a superstar....this guy was just as good or in some ways better than his brother William Nylander.

    What happened is the same thing that happened to fellow countryman, Teemu Selanne ... opposing coaching figuring out that he basically only had one spot that he shot from, the top of either blue circle. So they prevented him to doing so. It took Selanne time to realize that (only after arriving in Anaheim) and getting a great passer who was great at opening up space for him. Same needs to be for Lain in Columbus/wherever.

    I think the best use and fit for Laine would be some team that has defesively responsible first line center who can also set up for him. I don't think Laine is supplementary scoring, but something you need to build around. That's not really an upside for the player. I'd rather have player I can fit in to many roles and they'd bring an upside. Not something hard to fit and that requires certain conditions to flourish. But I do think that if those conditions are met Laine is absolutely fantastic piece in that and not all players can be built around either.

    Laine has the vice of being "uncoachable"... best thing for this player is to give him motivational linemates. I don't think he was badly coached... the talent was always there but if your plus minus stinks, you don't deserve first line minutes because you're either failing to backcheck or you're easily demoralized (and you drag down your teammates with a negative attitude). Instead, he can become the best second liner in the league... like Alex Mogilny. Alemo won a cup in Jersey, but he did so on the second line with Gomez because that's where he was best placed.

    Hold up, did you just say he never got his chance on the top line in 2019-2020? In 2019-2020 Laine played 45 % of the seasons even-strength situations with Scheifele and Connor. Wheeler was tossed out and played only 16,2 % of the season on the 1st line. Laine was very even in his game on the first line and his longest pointless streak that season was 4 games and on top of that he had 2 x 3 games and 1 x 2 games without points, otherwise he was producing. ´ But this season was the first season I saw Laine check ferociously, as well as battle in the corners. He did have quite a few giveaways, which is normal for talented forwards. Laine nevertheless has less giveaways than the likes of Leon Draisaitl (+200 more giveaways since 16-17), Johnny Gaudreau (+200 more giveaways since 16-17), Matt Barzal (+130 giveaways more than Laine despite playing one season less), Pastrnak (+100 more giveaways since 16-17), Huberdeau (+90 more giveaways since 16-17), and so on. And actually, even Auston Matthews has more giveaways than Laine, but he has more takeaways and more goals, so that can slide. The truth is, Laine has gotten much more critique about puck management and his "defensive play", than he should have. In reality he is not even in the top 50 most giveaways in the league since 2016-2017. If he keeps doing what he did this season, he will be a point-per-game player for a long time. But if he wants to crack that 50 goals, he needs to increase his shooting significantly. That's where he should take a page from Matthews book, that guy shoots constantly from anywhere and everywhere. He is always looking to shoot the puck even if it has the smallest chance to go in. This season Laine shot 167 shots which equalled to 26 goals. Matthews shot 348 shots which equalled to 60 goals. That's 108 % more than Laine. Had Laine shot the same amount, he would have tallied 54 goals. It's one of those things that his head coach is getting gray hair from. Larsen (head coach of Columbus) has said multiple times that he wants Laine to shoot the puck always, it doesn't matter from where. He will never ever get angry if he shoots the puck, but Laine has some mental block he needs to get over. Anyway, if you read all this you might be as crazy as I am about hockey. So, thanks for reading 🤣

    The jets may have the worst locker room in the league. Wheeler is one of the worst captains in the league and seemingly nobody really loves being in Winnipeg. The management doesn’t help either when you consider they basically bring back the same mediocre team every year without making any big moves whatsoever. This team needs a big change and a full management change, because it’s clearly not working in Winnipeg.

    I feel like the people who understood hockey the least in Winnipeg, loved him the most. He was fun to watch on the PP, but if you give a guy like him top tier minutes, he'll be setting a league record for minuses in no time. His shot is almost unmatched in NHL history, but you can tell he doesn't love the game. Winnipeg will always wish the best for the guy, but I hope he can figure out what it is that's been holding him back since joining the league.

    A lot of people blame Wheeler, Scheifele & Maurice for him getting traded but personally I don't think he was gonna re-sign after his contract expired anyway. I loved Laine here but I didn't like that he bitched not playing 1st line minutes, yes he has a deadly shot but I always thought Wheeler was more of a complete player at the time. I was devastated when he got traded but honestly I rather have Dubois. Awesome video.

    No shit he wasn't gonna resign, he openly admitted to a Finnish tabloid that Maurice wasn't running the show in WPG as well as Scheifele and Wheeler being very toxic talking shit behind his back and excluding him from everything like a bunch of 6yos at a sandbox. Well what goes around comes around and WPG can continue being just outside the playoffs for all I care.
