"What Comic Book Should I Buy?"

In this video I address a question that I get asked all the time, "Swagglehaus, I have a budget of $1000. What book should I buy?" The truth is there is NO RIGHT ANSWER. You always have to buy what you like and there is no predicting the future of what a books value is going to do. There are no guarantee's in comic book collecting. That said, I realize that is not a very satisfying thing to hear from a comic book investment stand point. People want to have the answer given to them. So in this LONG video I break down what would be my personal philosophy of how I would approach investing $1000 into a comic book if my goal was to get the best return on my money in the next three years (really it should be 5 years, but we'll settle on 3 for now). This is NOT financial advice, this video is just for entertainment purposes and me sharing my opinion. Don't listen to me I collect Darkhawk. Again, this is just my approach of what I would do using a LOT of generalizations.
I hope you guys enjoy this format and type of video and at the very least find it entertaining :). Wanted to try out something different for the channel.

I agree with the 20 cent category in this video, Bronze Age 1970's. If i had to invest 1000 dollars now and sell what i buy 3 years from now, i have 2 words for you, X-MEN KEYS. Why, because comic book collectors from the 1960's 1970's, 1980's and 1990's like Marvel Comics and they like the X-Men. Most of them grew up collecting X-Men comic books. And the collectors from the 1990's grew up watching the X-Men animated series and buying the X-Men series drawn by Jim Lee. All of those collectors are grown up and have money to spend. The new X-Men animated series will be released next year on Disney Plus and within the next 3 years an X-Men movie will surely be announced by Kevin Feige at Marvel Studies. I'd buy any of the following books first. X-Men 94, X-Men 100, X-Men 101, X-Men 104, X-Men 109, X-Men 116, X-Men 120, X-Men 121, X-Men 129, X-Men 130, X-Men 133, X-Men 244 and Giant Size X-Men #1. Have fun everyone.

@@maxbokov2878 Too many copies of X-Men books in the 1990's were printed. Books from the 1990's need to either have a classic cover or have key significance. The book also needs to be in a condition of 9.6 or better. I would only invest in an X-Men book from the 1990's in a condition of 9.8 that is available for purchase below the fair market value and preferably a newsstand variant.

You mentioned that everyone knows what you're talking about with 20¢ monsters, and I get the other categories pretty well, but what is the category of 20¢ monsters? I don't want any specific books, but are you talking about 20¢ horror books or something?

Basically referring to the 1st appearances of the major characters that came out in the Bronze Age (earlier side of it 20 or 25cent covers) and characters that haven’t yet shown up in the MCU.

Well you only have a $1000 so you can’t afford those characters. You’re really only looking at Black Widow, Hawkeye, Vision types. Plus I did say that Stans is my second choice :)

Summary Bronze > silver > golden > Copper > modern (based on video). Personally, I would choose golden age because I know it well.

For sure. I think if you're a seasoned collector, Golden age is probably the way to go. But that's the key, you have to know what you're doing - which is hard for a lot of people.

I like to diversify with around 50 percent in Twenty cent monsters and speculative characters i enjoy in the Captain copper and SH 2.0. Take your time and invest what you can afford to loose every year. Never fear or fomo.

I think this video is fantastic, but the variables lead you towards the 20 cent monster books. "Buyer has a thousand dollars" which means they can either only get a low grade Betty a higher grade monster 20, or an over produced 9.0 range mid collectable. Or roll the dice twice on new heros 2.0. A new investor on their own wouldn't know the new heroes so that would rule them out too. The budget and the time restrictions really pushed the 20 cent monsters. Let's say we have a new collector, who has 4 grand to play with and isn't expecting results in three years but in 20, or better for their children. Betty comics will still be old, but will the fact that they're almost 100 years old now give them a more antique appeal? The 20 cent monsters probably still have great appeal because of the cover art and monster love. The over played marvel characters might be all but finished, will our kids even like wolverine or spiderman once the hero 2.0's overtake them? Will they end up as "grandpa's old hero's crerated by some guy named S.Lee"... Will Miles Morales, Spider Gwen, X23 etc take over and make us forget about the copper age super heros? My kids like Miles and Gwen more than Spiderman... And who's next? I think the answer is diversification of the collection. Have a few Betty's. Make sure you have great cover art 20' cent monsters. Build your collection full of the copper heros and key cover arts. And dabble in speculate with new heros that make sense going forward. Miles... Miles > Last of us.
