Reacting to CGC's Transparency Video On Grading - 9.8's Are Going To Zero!

In this video I react to the recent video put out by CGC explaining the difference between 9.8's, 9.9's and 10.0's. On the one hand this is great content and the transparency is appreciated. On the other hand I can't imagine the comic book community is going to react positively to this, haha. I break down what he says and add my own thoughts.
What do you guys think about this CGC video? How do you feel about 9.8's now? I've said it before and I'll say it again 9.9's are going to soon be the new standard.

I think the MOST overlooked thing here is that these were all cardstock heavier paper books. Brand new card stock stuff can get 9.9s but standard comics almost neverrrrrrr can get above 9.8. I've submitted 7,000 books (or more honestly) and I've only ever gotten 6 9.9s. All of which were brand new card stock/lenticular/or metal moderns.

The whole reason condition is important to collectibles is because they’ve been through circulation and withstood the test of time. So the ones that survived the best should obviously be worth more. But if a huge stack of books go straight from the press to the slab, what’s the significance? You’d actually have to go out of your way to find a damaged copy. It’s completely antithetical to what collecting is all about.

"This is the 10.0 relative to THIS RUN of books" 💯 exactly!! They cannot distinguish a 9.9 or 10.0 by itself, just relative to hundreds of others. So unless you're sending >100 of the exact same book straight from the printer, you WON'T get a 10.0. I guess it's a way for CGC to "thank" the dealers who send hundreds per week. Nothing says 'independent' and 'trust' like good ol' nepotism 😅

Once again, CGC is going to piss on our heads and tell us it's raining. Based upon his video, the selection of what went in the 9.8. 9.9, and 10.0 pile (especially the cutoff from 9.8-9.9 and the cutoff from 9.9-10.0) was almost arbitrary. As of last month, there wasn't a virgin's chance in Alabama of almost 20% of a 400 book submission straight off the press getting 9.9s. Buy the book, not the grade. The difference between a 9.6 and a 10.0 is largely how much of a hurry the barely-above-minimum-wage worker with a couple of weeks of training was in to go to the bathroom and not wash their hands before grading more books.

Why are CGC receiving from the printers? Why do I feel I trust this company less every time they speak? Why do I perceive the Earth washing away beneath me when I see all the old CGC slabs in my collection? If 9.9's replace 9.8s Im done with the hobby and Ill burn them all on the ebay pyre. Does this not mean that CGC are saying they graded everything wrong previously? If they are saying that grades are different for the same things that have existed since comic books were born, does this mean they are rewriting history and the grading rules? The biggest take away for me is the factor that human error seems to play in the whole business. The formula has to include at least 15% margin of error, which seems wild, as well as a gut feeling for how I got to 15%. It's is prob more like 30%....

How do you slip the book into the inner mylar well and heat seal it without some minute damage to a corner or edge? What a joke this hobby has become.

I would say that a large portion of CGC's business over the past five years or so has come from people resubmitting already slabbed books after performing CPR on them in the hopes of a grade bump. That's what made their big crackdown on labeling books that had been cleaned as Restored so odd. Why would they risk killing that revenue stream they have by penalizing people for cleaning books?

For comparison (did some digging on CGCData), this book's sitting in the same ballpark as TMNT: Last Ronin, Batman: Damned, & the JLA/Avengers series in terms of % of books that got above 9.8 (out of 9.8+). Is that high for a stapled book? Probably, but given the above caveats, it's not outrageously so.

This CGC video appears to be more propaganda than informative content, and at worst, it's simply a load of nonsense. It primarily underscores the shortcomings in their grading system, particularly for items rated 9.9 and 10. It's worth noting that the individual presenting was once their senior grader, adding an interesting perspective to their critique. However, the more CGC attempts to enhance their reputation, the more apparent the flaws become.

I think to answer the question “aren’t you spending more time on grading anyways.” Maybe they do their quick 5 point scan to see white and most books don’t pass the greater than 9.8 test. You obviously say this same thing, but that is my opinion on what they do for us sending in 1-5 books at a time. I think this is a great video and will help me in my evaluation on what I send in or what I choose to buy if I have intentions on grading.

I think the issue with this is that it is now about the machinery that prints the comics. There will be equipment, used by some publishers, that cannot produce a 9.9 or 10 because of the sharpness of the cutting components. Or it could produce them when you change the blades but after printing some number of copies they all get bindery tears. To me, it would be better to recognize and then ignore production issues when grading comics. It should be focused on what has happened to the comic once it has arrived at your LCS.

I've been collecting comics since the late 70s. I've seen the birth of CGC (and all it's competitors) and their evolvement. I was one of the early members of CGC and submitted a dozen books just to see how they graded. They were super tuff back then, I remember how difficult it was to get a 9.9 and getting a 10 was almost impossible. I remember the 1st 10s that made headlines (I think it was in Wizard magazine) and it was a couple of foil cover Magdalena variants. Anything 9.9s and 10s were super rare. Well now fast forward almost 25 years later and 9.9s (according to this video) look like what would have been a 9.4 - 9.6 People that paid big dollars for 9.9s and 10s over the past few decades are going to lose their asses big time. I never wasted my money grading books because I knew they would just keep changing the standards and slabs and such. All the 10s of thousands of dollars I've saved that went to actually buying more comics has been a far better investment. The only time to grade your books is when you plan to sell them otherwise you're wasting your money.

Interesting video, still think this whole process is a farce, but that’s just my opinion. It seems like it’s all about the external cover condition, but are CGC going to page count every single book? One very important point that I learnt from many years working in Quality Control, 100% visual inspection is only 70% effective. Human error based on such high volume repetition. Was it just me or did that 10.0 look like it had mark on the right hand side front cover? 🤔

I love CGC. I hope I can get a 10 someday. I submitted 13 once and got a 9.8 on all 13. It’s gotta be so hard grading all day. Especially if there is pressure to produce high numbers. I don’t think enough people appreciate CGC for the service that they provide and the hard work.

Its clearly stated on there website what's whats... And its a perfectly valid way of grading... When a comic is folded the corners naturally explode because of the process you also get slight roller marks and you get a 9.8... The ones that make a 9.9 are the lucky ones that don't explode on the corners... Im fairly new to the scene and I've met people that don't understand the grading process that have been in it year's

It's neat to see CGC put out some videos on this topic, but tbh, without them putting graders notes on every single book they look at, I don't think they're giving us enough transparency. I got a 9.6 back in my last submission that looks like a 9.8 to me - came from the same stack as 3 9.8s. I'd love to get the book upgraded - but I'm not going to pay for a resubmission or for any extra work like pressing if I don't have any context for what cost it the grade from them.

The question that arises with me is as the popularity rises with the lure of these grades, will the publishers put the heat on the manufacturers in producing these elite grades? Meaning, will they make/tweek presses that produce this top grade? I work in corporate retail and I understand the power major companies can put on their vendors. But if we ignore the noise, read our comics, this process will go away. Just sayin…

This is very interesting. It seems like the ratio of 9.9 and 10.0s is way higher than what comes back from CGC. I have never submitted but I've been watching a lot of videos since 2018. I've seen billions of 9.8s and IF someone gets a 9.9 or 10.0 it's like they hit the jackpot. I agree with you that it's a new era. They're getting softer on grading and the old 9.8s are just older 9.8s. It was really not smart to have the 9.8 be the pinnacle when they could have lightened up a long time ago.
