get in touch with United States Post Office of the Inspector General. You will need appraisals of lost items. Over 5k could qualify. Mail fraud is a federal offense.

Swag, file your fraud claim with the postal office and call the local Chicago PD in his area (since you have his home address). Explain to them what happened and ask if it's possible to get a police escort to accompany you to get your books back. You'd be surprised how helpful they can be and how quickly he'd return your personal property or face criminal or even civil charges when you have a patrol car outside his house. Might be worth the roundtrip flight, my friend.

The scariest thing for me is the online seller who doesn't have a brick and mortar store. All it takes is one bad day, and a relatively anonymous person can close up his social media profiles, and walk away with someone's money.

Kudos to you for being vulnerable and honest and sharing your story with us. This happens more often than we think, but making this stuff public helps everyone learn.

It makes me sick that there are people out there that would lie, cheat, and steal, especially in a community were we try to build trust, loyalty, and friendships. File a police report and take him to small claims court for sure. You have his name and address. You seem like a nice guy and dont deserve this. I was very happy buying from you. Spread his instagram name all over asap so everyone knows who not to deal with. I got scammed on ebay but luckily they had my back. If they didnt I would have went to court. Good luck swag.

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear this happened to you, Swag! I salute you for not being too embarrassed to share your horrible experience, so others can avoid the same mistakes. I'd reveal the scammer's account, so that he can't pull the same scam on anyone else... at least make it very difficult for them. Good luck, and hopefully the comic community identity the books eventually, if and when they surface.

Thank you for putting this out to the community. We really need to root out these types of people because as you said this hobby is built on trust as well as reputation and this individual should be put on blast so that everyone else knows not to do any type of business with him.

I can't help you but I feel for you. A few scammers can wreck the scene for a lot of honest people, so we all end up damaged. The western suburbs of Chicago are dominated by Graham Crackers Comics, who are honorable people (in business for 40 years) and will probably be open to hearing your story.

So sorry this has happened to you! So many great comments about what you should and can do. To anyone reading this, make sure before you go into a transaction with someone on social media, one rule is to see if they have ever posted a video of them talking about their items. My store is in Orange County California, but I will still keep an eye out in the future for any of these books just incase he cracks them and send then to someone in this area.

I can't believe some people. Thanks for sharing your story - you are not alone. A good friend and mentor who has been selling and buying for many years just got scammed for the first time in a while. The books he received were much lower grade than in the photos, and they were crammed into slabs with bad counterfeit labels. Anyway, I hope you get your books back, and that this guy gets what he deserves.

I love all of the facebook groups that buy sell and trade, but I just window shop on them. If I by something online, it's through a site that backs my purchase, like ebay. It's just too risky. I hope you get your money back brother.

Ive dealt with the lower tier of people like this. As a victim. You have his name and address. Thats gold as long as it was a real name and they live there. Police stopping by and giving a friendly or unfriendly reminder of the potential crime commited can get things rolling. Ive had to hire a private investigator. They will do a “skip trace”. That works well. Maybe talk to an officer in the community where you live for advice then officer in their community. Work fast. These types of people like to move

Gash, I've received comics purchased from all over the place with no issues--including from our friends to the North, the South and even from across the pond. With that said, scammer exist everywhere! As much as we can, we have to be as vigilant as we can to protect ourselves.

I know this won’t make you feel better but many years ago I had an All-Winners 19 stolen from me. It was a RARE Golden Age book that in its condition worth at least today over $6000. Still hurts to this day.

One suggestion, when you feel the time is right, expose what you know about him.

When I was young. I bought a ASM 50 as a birthday girly when I was 13 (early 90s) My parents let some classmates come to my house when I wasn’t home after school one day and they stole my comics. The next day I see my ASM 50 at the LCS. (Action comics) I asked them about it, but they would not help me in any manner. I knew it was my copy because it had a manufacturing defect of the staples being on top of the book instead of on the side of the book. This made it instantly recognizable. I didn’t get my book back. Years later the same LCS was robbed and they lost all there keys including FF1 and x-men 1. Karma is a bitch.

I got scammed for $1500 USD last year with other collectibles, not comics. It was through PayPal even. People can be assholes. It happens, bro. Feel for you, Swaggle. Bummer 👎

For everyone saying or thinking "go to the address!" There is a good chance that the address wasn't theirs. Pick a random house, say that is your address for the trade, get a tracking number, hang out near the address when the package is suppose to arrive, accept the package from the carrier when they show up, go home and profit.
