What coffee machine should you buy $3k - $6k? PART 1

Ойын-сауық

I'd firstly like to apologise for all of those people who came to watch a video about $3-6k machines and the first 5 minutes are a machine that only costs around $2k but I had to include it because I forgot to include it in my video of $1-3k machines and it felt wrong! So skip ahead if you really can't bear to learn about a cheaper machine!
When it comes to machines at the $3k+ price, a lot of you may wonder, why do you even need a machine like these? Well, for many people, these machines are overkill and you'll be able to make fantastic tasting coffee on anything around the $1k mark and that will be all you ever really need. However, if you want to take your coffee to the next NEXT level, then these machines can really help you push the boundaries of espresso and experiment with different ways of brewing that can't be easily achieved on lower end machines.
I really admire the craftsmanship and design aesthetic of these machines and my very own machine at home is in this price range and I love it.
I'm sorry for the long video, I really wanted to show you a few different models that I just love and I may have gotten carried away with how many I want to share, so you'll have to wait for part 2 to see the entirety.
If you think I missed any really good machines that should be here, please let me know and I'll try to do a catch up one later in the year if I think there are too many I missed. I also haven't included machines that haven't come out yet like the Meticulous because I haven't really had a chance to play on them enough but as I do I will update the videos.
Thanks again for watching.
Enjoy Your Brew!

Great timing for this video. I’m currently shopping in this price range and one of the machines that looks like it ticks all the boxes is the La Pavoni Botticelli Specialty. There doesn’t seem to be many videos from the KZread coffee bros on it though, so maybe I should just go the Lelit Bianca V3. Looking forward to part 2

yes the La Pavonis are good and solid machines, however, I left them out of this list because there is not enough bang for buck compared to other machines (ie: the Bianca). It really is personal preference but that's how I feel about them.

Hello, I purchased a VBM junior hx espresso machine with a grinder mazzer super jolly pro v. I tried changing the grind size from 3 to 4, but the extraction was too watery and I didn't get any crema at all. I used 18g of ground coffee and aimed for a 36g espresso shot in 25 seconds, but I got 100g of espresso 😢. My puck is also too dry and muddy. Can you see where I went wrong? Could you please help me? thank you in advance

For many years i had a really nice Quick Mill HX e61 machine and i felt that sometimes it made amazing coffee and sometimes not so much even with the exact same workflow. As i only make 4 or 5 coffees a day i decided to splash out and get a La Marzocco Linea Micra and for me it is amazing machine and totally consistent.i just want great coffee not nerding out with flow control or controlling every single aspect of the brew like you can with a Decent DE1. Combined with the app i find i have lots of confrol of the important things and easily get great consistent shots everg single time. Plus the steam pressure is exceptional. The Micra is ridiculously expensive for what it is, but i feel like it will last for 20 years and i will get great coffee all fhe time so actually it will be a great long term investment.

I think levers should be it's own video, they are totally a different beast. Bezzera also have a lever machine called the Strega. What I saw in my research when I was looking to upgrade, the Strega is also a heat exchange like the Profitec Pro 800 but when you pull the lever down the pump applies water to the coffee while on the Pro 800 boiler pressure applies water to the coffee at a very low pressure. In fact when you plug the 800 to a water mains, the pump is disabled. The reason why I didn't go with a spring lever was despite I do have a preference for lever profiles, I saw no way to control the peak pressure on these springs, they are all 9 bar declining profiles which is great for most people but I prefer something closer to 6 bars. You would need a different spring to mimick a different pressure profile. The Odyssey Argos has 2 different spring options, one for 9 and one for 6, which sounds great in theory but if you have to swap the springs inbetween shots if you need to pull different coffees that need different pressure profiles. If everyone drinks he same coffee in the house, spring levers are a great option, but if you need flexibility in your house to cater to different tastes, a direct lever or something that mimicks it like the Decent or upcoming Meticulous are much better options. It's all about what you need out of a coffee machine.

My choice was the Profitec Pro 800! I came from an Isomac Zaffiro (SB e-61) that served me well for 12 years. The machine shines in espresso due to the spring lever profile, but I thoroughly enjoy the mechanical side of the machine, the silent brews (if plumbed in) and just pulling on that lever. It feels like a craft. In short: it delivers superb coffee while checking all the nostalgic/romantic boxes. You are not correct (at 20:30) in saying it cannot brew and steam at the same time. It certainly can as it is a single boiler dipper system. That system comes with limitations, though: like on an HX the PID controls the steam temp in the kettle, not the actual brew water. And at a lower temp, ca. 121-122C (250-252F), used for darker roasts, the steam power is a bit lacking. Still, I have not regretted my choice or the large expense for even a second.

Great comparisons and summary. Just as I thought. The Bianca is really the best for the buck. It's a bit too much for me and at this point I don't know if I'll ever own so a rotary pump isn't necessary which is why I went with the Mara X which I consider the next best thing and really affordable. I hate displays on things that aren't really electronics. Those always age poorly. At the price points we're talking here, I cannot excuse any plastic on the machines. All those knobs and accents should be premium.

That's really tough (they are the same company too). ECM is supreme quality internals so durability is better but unless you're an engineer you probably won't notice or care. So how I would choose is look at the features you want the most, and I think Profitec probably has more features per dollar.

Good guess, but I should have clarified that I had to split this video into 2 parts because it went on so long. My machine is actually in part 2 sorry! Yes, theres so many options that makes it very hard to decide! But none of these machines will disappoint you so just get the one that you love the look of the most and has the features you really want. If flow profiling is your preference then get the Bianca, if the class lines of the Mini are more your style, then grab that. If you want all the advanced features and endless possibilities then theres the Decent... but you'll have to wait for my next video to hear more about that! 😅

As Lance Hedrick did the Lelit Mara X video he explicitly pointed out that all Lelit E61 Group heads don't have the mechanical pre-infusion feature and are therefor not true E61's, now I'm confused... 🤔

  • @Rydecoffeecoach

    @Rydecoffeecoach

    Ай бұрын

He's not incorrect, it isn't a "true" e61 but then again, that technology was invented back in (1961) the day and over time it has evolved anyway so are any of the machines today true e61s? It was originally designed as a way to both control temperature stability (pretty cool for the 60s) and volumetric pumps that gave a true constant 9bar extraction over lever machines etc. These days we have much better temp control and pumps so it's more or less a design aesthetic. The mechanical preinfusion was an accidental bonus and yes, the Lelit doesn't work exactly the same.
