What causes kidney stones? - Arash Shadman

View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/what-causes...
The biggest kidney stone on record weighed more than a kilogram and was 17 centimeters in diameter. The patient didn’t actually swallow a stone the size of a coconut; kidney stones form inside the body. So how do they grow in the first place? And why are they so painful to get out? Arash Shadman shares the science behind kidney stones.

I had a 6 mm stone. I can definitely say it was the worst pain I've ever experienced. I woke up at 3 am on January 2nd, 2020 and it was so awful that I was shaking and vomiting. Then I spent a long morning in the emergency room so they could give me fluids, pain meds, and diagnose the problem. It took two surgeries to get rid of the stone, and was an incredibly emotionally and physically taxing month. Needless to say I've increased my water intake a lot since then because I really want to avoid going through it again.

@veenu thomas Probably depends on the kind of stone you're dealing with and how old you are. In some cases I think doctors will recommend diet changes, and of course, a increase in water intake is helpful. But you'll probably need to talk to your doctor about strategies specific to your situation.

I just passed my first yesterday, and it had started moving only a week prior. I can’t imagine a month of that pain, discomfort, and loss of sleep; I feel for you. My urologist and I made an ultimatum that I would pass the stone in the next several days or they would fish it out. Luckily, it passed the next day, so I avoided the surgery.

My cat actually passed a kidney stone awhile ago, and it was the most horrifying thing I’ve ever witnessed. She was bleeding and running around wailing with horrible pain. I felt so bad for her, and we took her to the vet ASAP. I was afraid she was going to die because of the blood I saw, but the vet said she had passed a stone and I was so relieved that she would be ok. I’m so glad she’s doing better now and I always double check now to make sure her water bowl is extra full. I hope anyone else who is going through that experience themselves makes it out ok ❤️

I have 3 big kidney stones like in general 7cm. My kidney is working in only 40% now and I wait for my intervention this month. This is the most painful thing and I do not wish it even to my worst enemy. The half of the doctors didn’t see my big stones but my pain continued… then I found the right doctor at the end of my kidneys life and now we pray and hope to save it. Please please guys check if something doesn’t feel normal, check if it hurts… just always check! And may I ask you friends to pray for me? Thanks!

I have had many-and yes they suck, but I have had things that were SOOO much worse happen...its mostly something that people get through just fine. I had sepsis with one, that was the worst (esp since the idiot radiologist missed the stone in my ureter on my initial arrival to teh hosp-and after 3 days of high fever and misery, the urologist was called and he found teh stone on the SAME SCAN...I was pissed...) The on issue is getting enough pain meds, since the US govt is waging a war on acess to proper pain control. One med they commonly forget, but that helps alot, is pyridium-which numbs the urinary tract-great stuff but you have to ask for it sometimes.

YES! I’ve heard of stories of people going through horrible events and they sometimes say “I just wanted to die” and I always thought that was ridiculous. But after my kidney stone I now COMPLETELY understand how someone is capable of waiting death than to suffer intense pain. I now know it is truly possible to be in a situation where death is more preferable to the level of suffering one is going through. The pain is so epically saturating that you lose complete control of your existence and fall the all consuming force that give you no other choice.

Humans didn't have kidney stones until very recently. You know why? Because people either didn't eat vegetables or at least didn't eat it raw, ever. It's not going to go away because of some medical advancement but by people understanding things beyond the big-agro-industry propaganda. Vegetables have no significant nutrition, and even when they do, they are not bio-available to humans. Compare nutrition data from vegetables to same amount of meat and milk products and you'll see what I mean. Also, doctors want more kidney stones so they'll never recommend the proper solution, only the treatments.

To think that out of all living things humans are gods chosen ones (favorite experiments) and it cares about you. Dinosaurs were the real one's in-charge for hundreds of millions of years, we were just lucky that we didn't have to deal with them. There were hardly even any mammals during that time. We have been around for just hundred thousand years and some of us are already so full of themselves, thinking everything was created just for us. Supernatural powers care about us. Hilarious!

I remember feeling with nausea and vomiting due to an extremely pain from my back to my stomach, the doctor told me that it was probably a kidney stone but first I made an ultrasound it turns out that my kidneys are healthy but the pain was due to escoliosis however the pain and symptoms are really similar.

I almost got a surgery until another doc suggested that I should drink plenty of water and do jumping/running- hoping it might throw itself from kidney through urine. It actually works and i perform this same technique and flush out 3 stones by simply drinking water and jump/run. This was really painful at the first time but it mellowed down as i reached to the third. Before my fourth comes, i actually do know what it feels and what to be done. Thanks god I didn’t do surgery.

I would say alkaline water has helped me tremendously with acid reflux as I have struggled with it for 12 year's. Currently for the last few months since consuming alkaline water bouts of acid reflux has lessen from daily to maybe less than weekly, BUT I must add I had to adjust my food menu also too maximize the benefits of drinking alkaline water.
