What Causes (and Fixes) Leaky Gut | Dr. Daniel Amen

Struggling with mood swings, anxiety, depression, lack of focus, or memory problems? The reason may not be related to your psyche. The root cause just might lie in your gut. What does your gut have to do with your mental health? A lot! Emotional and psychological pain-nervousness, sadness, stress, and grief-are often expressed with gut distress. Here’s how it happens.
Did you know that your gastrointestinal tract is lined with about 100 million neurons? That’s more neurons than you have in your spinal cord or in your peripheral nervous system, which is why the gut is often referred to as the “second brain.” This nerve tissue is in direct communication with the brain inside your skull, which explains why you get butterflies before a big job interview or feel queasy when you’re upset.
When you have problems with your gut, you’re more likely to have mental health problems. You have about thirty feet of tubing (including your stomach) that goes from your mouth to the other end. This tubing is lined with a single layer of cells with tight junctions that allows you to digest food in an efficient way and also protect it from foreign invaders. Big trouble happens when the cell junctions widen and the lining becomes excessively porous, a condition known as leaky gut.

here's several tips for curing leaky gut Have a whole food, nutrient-rich diet that avoids foods which irritate the gut Make sure your digestion is working: You can eat an idea diet, but if you aren’t digesting food appropriately, it is not going to help. Discover and remove underlying food sensitivities - eliminate a suspected food for a period of time Find ways to reduce and eliminate stress:eg Prayer, meditation, yoga, adequate sleep, and regular massage Consume gut healing foods and nutrients Balance your gut flora using appropriate amounts of fermented foods in your diet each day. Find and eliminate gastrointestinal infections Try the use of gut-irritating medications: Lessen exposure to environmental toxins Get plenty sleep and avoid overtraining which are a form of stress to your body. (I learned these and the reasons they work from Richala remedy system website )

Lights out and no blue light at a certain time to get your melatonin started. Epsom salt baths, lavender oil, you name it. And Supplements!! Magnesium and zinc at night. Just a small thought/correction about organic food - not only do you avoid most pesticides, but organic food grown regeneratively does have higher levels of absorbable nutrients and increases bioavailability. It is truly magical what happens when the soil is healthy. It has been proven the same in animal foods, but I believe the difference is even more noticeable in animal foods.

in my opinion, we make a BIG mistake when we call the flora intestinal "2nd brain" it should be called "1st brain" because the head brain get results from our flora when we feed ourselves. so it goes WE'RE what we eat, not what we think, it we want good thought there we go eat good, not junk food, let's gave some respect to our intestinal flora.

I just find his preamble before these talks is too long & slow and the ADD or ADHD makes us very impatient & he know that. I wish his delivery was faster and he got to the point quicker and that he did a 5 or 10 point summary of each of these talks to leave us with a brief list of the important points so thatit is the last thing we hear in these talks .

However I had a bout of terrible food poisoning last fall from a restaurant which I’m sure affected my gut’s micro biome. I also felt the same way about Dr. Fauci and the medical team never mentioning once how people need to change their way of eating. Not once. I kept waiting, and it never happened. 88% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy which is a big factor when it comes to dying from Covid. Thank you Dr. Amen!

HUGE fan. I have been researching and theorizing about exercise and food since under grad .. before 2001. In 2014 I married a man whose life is aggriculture. In the beginning I was intrigued by his insights in to how things worked. As the grandson of both ranchers and farmers (Hatfield and McCoys) he grew up exposed to it all. We have talked organic, antibiotics, etc. The thing I have figured out is a great deal of people make statements regarding the aggriculture industry, without actually knowing the process of birth to dinner plate. By knowing, I mean following the day to day from start to finish including the business side of things. Just like you talk about the media wanting to create fear ..so do certain people in the food Industry because it's business?

Would you please offer information on how to manage the symptoms of bacterial die off? When getting the gut healthy again, it's more than just increasing the healthy bacteria. It also includes the die off of the bad bacteria. Many times the die off symptoms can feel worse than the illness itself. The Herxheimer reaction that ensues can be fierce, too. There *must* be some way to manage the symptoms of die off, causing the sufferer to abandon the cleanse/detox because they can feel sicker before feeling any better. Would you mind to do a video on this, please?

Form a new relationship w the pain. The pain is a symptom of bad bacteria dying off and leaving your system, it is good thing ultimately correct? Attaching a positive mantra like "This pain is good. This pain will get better" to such a sensation will drastically change how you're perceiving the pain In the moment. Another idea. When you feel the pain, view it as a child and try to comfort it. Tell the pain "I'm here for you. We'll get through this together" Its about shifting your perspective in the moment the pain arises. Dont try to suppress it or avoid it, adress it with love. Tbh it sounds like your question is more about avoiding dismofort than working through the healing process. Im not casting any shame my friend. None of these ideas are my own, their from a Vietnamese monk named Thich Nhat Hanh. Hes got bunch of books, all of them insightful. Take care (:

I never knew gut pain exists. After two miscarriages and a stillbirth ( medical mistake) I was getting very sick. I got Eustachian tube problems and chronic sinus issue, pressure in my throat, extreme acid reflux, Gastritis and irregular bowel movements. I often get a feeling of cold in my bowel. But no test showed anything but inflammation for no reason. I spend almost two years crying for my son and in shock about our disability to adopt after finding out that the chances are so slim ( 2,2million applications , less than 90K non related adoptions per year). I think it would have killed me. Im now pregnant again and can’t take medications. I don’t trust these Doctors anyway anymore. They bombarded me with antibiotics and made it worse.

@@MonaFarooqSheikh I pray, you’ll have another pregnancy, that goes well. I’m almost 26 weeks pregnant right now. We almost lost this baby too but finally a good Doctor found out what’s wrong. I have insufficient cervix, from a prior surgery, where a doctor injured my cervix so badly, that it can’t hold a baby anymore in second trimester. But now, my specialist found it out and gave me surgery, to hold the baby. But if someone loses multiple pregnancies earlier ( before 13 weeks ) it could be low progesterone. If losses happen in second trimester, it’s often a weak cervix. I know, it’s so hard, to find good doctors but we finally did find one. My own obstetrician told us we’d lose our baby but here we are at 26 weeks. With diet I don’t listen to Doctors anymore, most don’t know much about it, so it’s good you do your own research.
